CHAPTER 16-The Man Who Wanted A Legacy

Rachel did not sleep.
Not because she was afraid.
Not anymore.
Fear had changed.
At the beginning, fear made her question everything.
Her marriage.
Her family.
Her own identity.
But now fear had become something else.
A reason to fight.
Because every secret Adrian Hayes buried had one thing in common.
Someone innocent paid the price.
And this time, he had chosen Maddie.
Rachel stared at the photograph on her phone.
Her daughter sleeping.
Taken inside their own house.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had been close.
Too close.
She looked at Grant.
"He was there."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"Who?"
"Hayes."
The room went silent.
"He has been watching us."
Michael immediately checked the security footage.
After several minutes, his expression changed.
"What?"
Rachel walked closer.
"What did you find?"
Michael turned the screen.
A figure appeared.
A man standing outside their house.
The image was blurry.
But the posture was familiar.
The confidence.
The calmness.
The way he stood like he owned the world.
Adrian Hayes.
Grant clenched his fist.
"He wanted us to know."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Michael looked at the screen.
"Because this was never about hiding."
A pause.
"It was about control."
They moved Maddie to a secure location.
A place Detective Harris arranged.
A place nobody knew.
No phones.
No social media.
No outside contact.
For the first time in weeks, Rachel felt like she could breathe.
Maddie sat on the floor drawing.
Rachel watched her.
The picture was simple.
A family.
A mother.
A father.
A little girl.
Three people holding hands.
Rachel smiled sadly.
"What are you drawing?"
Maddie looked up.
"Us."
Rachel sat beside her.
"Do you think families have to look the same?"
Maddie tilted her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because Grandma doesn't look like you."
Rachel almost laughed.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Maddie was still innocent.
Still kind.
Still able to see what adults forgot.
"What makes a family?"
Maddie thought.
Then answered:
"People who stay."
Rachel felt tears forming.
Because her daughter understood something adults spent years destroying.
Meanwhile, Grant met with Detective Harris.
They discovered something unexpected.
Adrian Hayes had not escaped custody.
He had planned everything.
The surrender.
The evidence.
The messages.
Everything.
"He wanted to be arrested."
Detective Harris looked serious.
"Why?"
Grant stared at the files.
"Because he knew we would search everything."
"And?"
"And he wanted us to find something."
They opened the final archive recovered from Hayes' facility.
Most files were encrypted.
But one folder was different.
No password.
No protection.
The name:
BENNETT LEGACY
Grant opened it.
Inside were thousands of pages.
Research.
Family trees.
Predictions.
But the final document caught his attention.
PHASE THREE — NATURAL SUCCESSION
Grant read the first line.
Then stopped.
"What?"
Detective Harris asked.
Grant looked sick.
"The experiment was never about creating children."
"Then what?"
Grant turned the document around.
"It was about creating descendants."
The meaning was horrifying.
Adrian Hayes didn't want one perfect child.
He wanted generations.
A family line.
A bloodline that would continue without him.
The children were only the beginning.
The real goal was the grandchildren.
And Maddie was the first child who represented that future.
Rachel felt anger when she heard.
"She is five years old."
Grant looked at her.
"I know."
"She still believes unicorns are real."
"I know."
"She still asks for pancakes shaped like animals."
"I know."
Rachel's voice broke.
"And he looks at her like she's a number."
Grant took her hand.
"Not anymore."
That night, Evelyn came to see Rachel.
For the first time, Rachel almost refused.
But Evelyn said something that changed her mind.
"I know where Hayes kept the original records."
Rachel let her inside.
Grant immediately became defensive.
"You don't get to help now."
Evelyn accepted the anger.
"I know."
She looked at Maddie's drawing on the table.
"I deserve that."
Rachel watched her.
"Why are you here?"
Evelyn took a deep breath.
"Because I was wrong."
A pause.
"And because I know what Adrian plans to do."
Grant looked at her.
"You knew?"
Evelyn nodded.
"He told me years ago."
Rachel's expression hardened.
"And you said nothing."
"I was afraid."
Again.
That word.
But this time, Evelyn continued.
"I was afraid because I saw what happened to Michael."
Michael looked at her.
"What happened?"
Evelyn looked ashamed.
"Adrian tried to remove him from the experiment."
Rachel froze.
"What does that mean?"
Evelyn whispered:
"He considered Michael a failure."
Silence.
Michael looked away.
Because he already knew.
Evelyn revealed the final secret.
Adrian Hayes did not create only one project.
There were multiple versions.
Different families.
Different genetic combinations.
Different children.
The Bennett family was only one branch.
"There are others."
Rachel looked at her.
"Other experiments?"
Evelyn nodded.
"And some of them know about Maddie."
Grant became tense.
"Who?"
Evelyn looked toward the window.
"The people who believe Adrian was right."
The next morning, Detective Harris arrived.
His face told them something was wrong.
"We found a group connected to Hayes."
Rachel stood.
"What group?"
He placed photographs on the table.
People.
Adults.
Children.
Families.
All connected.
Grant looked at one photograph.
Then froze.
"What?"
Rachel looked.
A man.
Standing beside Adrian Hayes.
Someone she had seen before.
Someone who had been helping them.
Someone they trusted.
Michael.
Rachel turned slowly.
"Michael?"
Everyone looked at him.
Michael's face changed.
"I can explain."
Grant stepped forward.
"Explain what?"
Michael looked at the photographs.
Then whispered:
"The truth."
Silence.
"I wasn't searching for Hayes because I wanted to stop him."
Rachel felt her heart sink.
"Then why?"
Michael looked at them.
"Because I was trying to find my place in his plan."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael said the words that shattered the last piece of trust.
"I was never his victim."
May you like
A pause.
"I was his first assistant."
