Chapter 9 - The Father Who Wasn’t Telling the Truth
Everyone looked at Luke.
The room became silent.
Even Luke looked shocked.
“I didn’t do that.”
Nobody believed him.
Not after everything.
Not after the lies.
Not after the baby switch.
Detective Harris stood up.
“You accessed the system from your phone.”
Luke shook his head.
“My phone was taken.”
Harris looked at him.
“Then someone used your credentials.”
Luke suddenly looked afraid.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
“You don’t understand.”
I stared at him.
“Then explain.”
Luke looked at me.
“Someone wants me blamed.”
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“Because you have been telling the truth?”
His eyes filled with pain.
“Mia, I know what this looks like.”
“No.”
My voice broke.
“You don’t know what this feels like.”
I touched my daughter’s blanket.
“You made me believe she was in my arms.”
Luke looked away.
For the first time, I saw something in his face.
Regret.
Real regret.
But regret was not enough.
Not anymore.
Then Eli entered the room.
He had been listening.
“Dad…”
Luke looked at him.
The boy held something in his hand.
A small flash drive.
“What is that?”
Eli walked toward me.
“I found it before the police came.”
Everyone stared.
“Where?”
“In Dad’s old office.”
Luke stood.
“Eli, no.”
The boy stepped back.
“You said I was lying.”
His voice trembled.
“But I wasn’t.”
Detective Harris took the flash drive.
Within minutes, the files were opened.
Documents.
Emails.
Hospital records.
And one video.
A video recorded three days before my delivery.
Luke appeared on the screen.
Talking to Vanessa Reed.
My heart sank.
The video played.
Vanessa said:
“You understand what happens if the truth comes out?”
Luke answered:
“I know.”
“You could lose everything.”
A pause.
Then Luke said:
“I only need one chance to fix what I destroyed.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Luke.
“What did you destroy?”
He closed his eyes.
And finally admitted the truth.
“Six years ago…”
His voice cracked.
“I caused the mistake that separated Eli from his real family.”
My heart stopped.
“And this baby?”
Luke looked at the floor.
“This baby was supposed to expose everything.”
The room went silent.
Detective Harris stared at him.
“Explain.”
Luke swallowed.
“Vanessa found out that the hospital system still contained the original records.”
He looked at me.
“She planned to reveal the truth.”
“Then why switch the babies?”
Luke whispered:
“Because she knew someone would try to erase the evidence.”
A terrifying thought entered my mind.
“Who?”
Luke looked at the door.
And said the name nobody expected.
“Someone inside this hospital.”
At that exact moment…
the maternity wing lights went out.
The alarms stopped.
The cameras disconnected.
