Chapter 15 - The Truth That Broke My Family

Three days later, Victoria Hale contacted us.
Not through the police.
Not through lawyers.
Through me.
A message appeared on my phone.
You deserve the truth.
Attached was a location.
An abandoned research facility outside the city.
Detective Harris wanted to stop me from going.
But I couldn’t wait anymore.
I needed answers.
Why my daughter?
Why Luke?
Why me?
When we arrived, the building was empty.
Almost.
Inside was a single room.
A table.
A chair.
And hundreds of files.
Victoria was waiting.
She looked older than her photographs.
But her eyes were sharp.
“You came.”
I stared at her.
“You destroyed my family.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Luke.
“He did.”
Luke looked away.
Victoria opened a file.
“Mia, your daughter was never supposed to be switched.”
My heart stopped.
“Then why?”
She placed a document in front of me.
A DNA report.
Again.
Another one.
But this time…
the name was different.
I read it.
And my hands started shaking.
The biological mother listed wasn’t me.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It was another woman.
A woman who had disappeared before delivery.
“What is this?”
Victoria looked at Luke.
“Tell her.”
Luke remained silent.
“Tell her what you did.”
The room became unbearable.
I looked at my husband.
“What did you do?”
Luke finally broke.
“I found out before the delivery.”
“Found out what?”
“That the baby you were carrying…”
His voice cracked.
“Was connected to the fertility records.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
Luke swallowed.
“It means your embryo was one of the ones transferred incorrectly.”
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“My baby…”
“She was created from another couple’s genetic material.”
The world went silent.
I looked at my daughter’s photograph.
My beautiful baby.
The child I loved from the first moment.
Then Victoria said the words that changed everything.
“But that is not the worst part.”
I looked at her.
“What could possibly be worse?”
She opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman.
Pregnant.
Standing beside Luke six years ago.
My blood froze.
Because I knew her.
She was the woman from the old photograph.
The woman who lost a baby.
The woman everyone thought was gone.
Victoria whispered:
“Your husband knew her.”
I looked at Luke.
“Who is she?”
Luke closed his eyes.
May you like
And finally said the truth.
“She is your daughter’s biological mother.”
