Chapter 3 - The Secret Luke Buried

The question hung in the room.

Where is my daughter?

Nobody had an answer.

Not Camille.

Not security.

Not Luke.

Especially not Luke.

The police were called within minutes.

The maternity floor became a crime scene.

Nurses checked every bassinet.

Every room.

Every identification record.

But my daughter was gone.

My baby girl.

The child I had carried for nine months.

The child whose heartbeat I had listened to every week.

Missing.

I stared at Luke.

I searched his face for the man I married.

The man who held my hand during pregnancy.

The man who promised he would protect our family.

But all I saw was fear.

“You knew.”

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Luke looked at me.

“Mia—”

“You knew.”

This time louder.

“You knew that baby wasn’t ours.”

His silence answered everything.

Eli started crying again.

“He did it because of the secret.”

Everyone turned.

Luke’s face changed.

“Eli.”

The boy hugged himself.

“He said nobody could know.”

My blood ran cold.

“What secret?”

Eli looked at Luke.

Then at me.

“Dad said if people found out…”

He stopped.

“What?”

Eli wiped his tears.

“He would lose everything.”

The police officer stepped closer.

“Luke, we need you to explain.”

But Luke refused.

“I need a lawyer.”

That sentence destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

My husband.

The father of my child.

The man who was supposed to protect us.

Was protecting himself.

Camille pulled me aside.

“Mia, I need to tell you something.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She lowered her voice.

“When we scanned the baby’s bracelet, the system showed something unusual.”

“What?”

“The infant records were altered before birth.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“Someone accessed the hospital database.”

A chill moved through me.

“This wasn’t just a switch.”

Camille nodded.

“No.”

Her eyes became serious.

“Someone planned this.”

The investigation expanded quickly.

Security footage was reviewed.

And then they found it.

A camera from the maternity hallway.

At 2:14 a.m.

Luke entering the restricted nursery area.

Alone.

Carrying a file.

And leaving twenty minutes later…

with a different bassinet.

I closed my eyes.

The pain in my chest was worse than the pain from surgery.

Because the truth was finally clear.

My husband didn’t make a mistake.

He made a choice.

But why?

Why would Luke steal another woman’s baby?

Why would he risk destroying our family?

Then Detective Harris arrived with a folder.

He placed it on my bedside table.

“Mia, there is something you need to see.”

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a document.

A birth record.

Not mine.

Not Rachel’s.

Another child.

Another name.

And underneath it was Luke’s signature.

I looked up.

“What is this?”

Detective Harris hesitated.

“Your husband may have been involved in another incident six years ago.”

My eyes moved toward Eli.

Six years.

The same age as Eli.

The same age as the child Luke had always protected.

“What incident?”

The detective opened the folder.

“He was accused of changing medical records during another custody case.”

I felt the room spin.

Luke wasn’t hiding a mistake.

He was hiding a history.

And the most terrifying possibility entered my mind.

Maybe this wasn’t the first time Luke had stolen someone’s truth.

May you like

Maybe my missing daughter…

was only the beginning.
