Chapter 17 - The Reunion Nobody Expected

Amelia Carter entered the room the next morning.
I expected anger.
I expected hatred.
I expected someone who would blame me.
Instead…
She looked at my daughter.
And cried.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
Like someone who had spent six years holding back a pain too large to carry.
“That’s her.”
Nobody answered.
Amelia stepped closer.
“She has the same eyes.”
My heart tightened.
Because I understood something.
No matter how complicated the truth was…
this woman loved my child.
Just like I did.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
The words shocked me.
“For what?”
“For what happened to you.”
I shook my head.
“You lost her.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I lost years.”
She looked at the baby.
“But you gave her love.”
The room became silent.
Because that was the hardest truth.
Biology created a connection.
But love created a family.
Detective Harris explained that the courts would decide custody arrangements.
But before any legal battle began…
Amelia asked for one thing.
“To know who helped Luke.”
Everyone looked at him.
Luke sat quietly.
Broken.
“I did.”
His voice was almost a whisper.
“I helped cover the records.”
Amelia closed her eyes.
“Why?”
“Because Victoria threatened to expose me.”
Victoria immediately reacted.
“That’s not true.”
Luke looked at her.
“It is.”
The detective noticed the tension.
“What threat?”
Luke hesitated.
Then he finally revealed everything.
Six years ago, after the records were discovered, Victoria gave him a choice.
Confess.
Or lose everything.
His career.
His reputation.
His relationship with Eli.
Luke chose silence.
But silence became another crime.
Then Amelia asked the question nobody expected.
“Why did you switch Mia’s baby?”
Luke looked at me.
“I didn’t.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Luke shook his head.
“I brought the wrong baby because someone gave me false instructions.”
Detective Harris frowned.
“Who?”
Luke looked toward Victoria.
“She told me the records had been corrected.”
Victoria stepped back.
“That’s a lie.”
But then Camille entered.
She held a small envelope.
“We found this in the hospital archive.”
She opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Signed by Victoria.
The note contained instructions.
The baby switch plan.
The target.
The timing.
Everything.
Victoria’s expression finally changed.
The truth had caught her.
But then she smiled.
A cold smile.
“You still don’t understand.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
May you like
She looked at my daughter.
“The switch was never the final plan.”
