Chapter 8 - The Woman Behind the Switch

The investigation changed direction overnight.

The police stopped looking for a random baby thief.

They started looking at a much bigger crime.

A network.

A pattern.

Camille brought me the updated hospital report.

“We found the person who accessed the maternity database.”

I looked at her.

“Luke?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

My heart tightened.

“Then who?”

She placed a photograph on the table.

A woman.

Older.

Dark hair.

A scar across her hand.

My breath caught.

“Eli described her.”

Camille nodded.

“Her name is Dr. Vanessa Reed.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to Luke.

Because when Detective Harris showed him the picture…

his face changed instantly.

“You know her.”

Luke didn’t answer.

“Luke.”

Finally, he whispered:

“She was there when Eli was born.”

The room became silent.

“What does that mean?”

Luke rubbed his face.

“She was the director of the fertility program.”

The detective stepped closer.

“And what happened?”

Luke stared at the photo.

“She discovered the records were wrong.”

“Wrong how?”

Luke’s voice became quiet.

“She knew some children had been matched incorrectly.”

My stomach turned.

“How many?”

Luke looked at Harris.

“More than anyone knows.”

The pieces started connecting.

The missing files.

The altered records.

The baby bracelets.

This wasn’t about one newborn.

It was about years of hidden mistakes.

But then Luke said something that shocked everyone.

“Vanessa didn’t want money.”

Detective Harris frowned.

“Then what did she want?”

Luke looked at me.

“She wanted the children returned.”

I felt confused.

“She stole babies to return babies?”

“No.”

Luke shook his head.

“She believed she was fixing what was broken.”

That was when I understood.

The most dangerous people were not always the ones who knew they were evil.

Sometimes they were the ones who convinced themselves they were right.

Then security rushed into the room.

“Detective.”

Everyone turned.

“There’s a problem.”

“What happened?”

The officer looked at me.

“Your daughter’s hospital bracelet has been replaced again.”

My blood froze.

“What?”

Camille immediately left the room.

Seconds later, she returned.

Her face was pale.

“The baby is safe.”

I released a breath.

“Then what happened?”

Camille looked at Luke.

“Someone tried to access her records.”

The detective asked:

“Who?”

Camille looked at the screen.

May you like

Then answered:

“Luke Callahan.”
