Chapter 4 - The File Hidden in the Nursery

The hospital room no longer felt like a place where my daughter was born.

It felt like a crime scene.

The flowers Luke brought sat untouched on the table.

The congratulations cards from family members remained unopened.

Everything that was supposed to represent happiness now looked like evidence of a lie.

I sat against the raised hospital bed, my hands wrapped around the small blanket that once belonged to my daughter.

The blanket smelled faintly like the lavender detergent I had chosen months ago.

I had imagined bringing her home wrapped in it.

Now it was the only proof I had that she had existed in my arms at all.

Detective Harris stood near the window.

His expression was careful.

Almost sympathetic.

But I didn’t want sympathy.

I wanted answers.

“Where is Luke?”

The detective looked toward the hallway.

“Still being questioned.”

“Is he arrested?”

“Not yet.”

My heart tightened.

“Not yet?”

Harris sighed.

“We have evidence that he entered a restricted area and manipulated hospital records.”

“Then why isn’t he arrested?”

“Because we still need to prove where your daughter is and whether someone else was involved.”

Someone else.

The words stayed in my mind.

Because suddenly I realized something.

Luke was not acting like a man who panicked.

He was acting like a man following a plan.

A terrible plan.

Camille entered the room holding a tablet.

“I found something.”

Everyone turned.

The nurse looked exhausted.

She had been working nonstop since the alarm.

“What did you find?”

She placed the tablet on the table.

“The newborn identification system keeps a record every time a bracelet is created, scanned, or modified.”

I stared at the screen.

“And?”

“The bracelet assigned to Mia’s daughter was changed three hours before delivery.”

My breathing stopped.

“Three hours?”

Camille nodded.

“Before your C-section.”

That meant Luke didn’t switch the babies afterward.

He prepared before my daughter was even born.

I looked at Detective Harris.

“He knew.”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Luke knew exactly what he was doing.

A police officer entered the room.

“Detective, we found something in the husband’s vehicle.”

Harris followed him outside.

Minutes later, he returned carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a hospital access card.

A second phone.

And a folder.

My stomach twisted.

“Open it.”

Harris hesitated.

“Mia…”

“Open it.”

He placed the folder on the bed.

Inside were printed medical records.

Not mine.

Not Rachel’s.

A baby’s medical information.

A baby with a different name.

My hands started shaking.

“What is this?”

Harris looked at the paperwork.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

Then Camille noticed something.

She took one page.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She pointed at the bottom.

A signature.

Luke Callahan.

My husband’s name.

I felt numb.

“Why would he have another baby’s medical records?”

Nobody spoke.

Then Eli appeared at the door.

A security officer was standing behind him.

“I need to tell Mom something.”

Everyone looked at him.

The little boy stepped inside.

His eyes were swollen from crying.

But his voice was steady.

“Dad has done this before.”

The room froze.

I stared at him.

“Eli…”

He looked down.

“When I was little, he made me pretend I didn’t remember something.”

“What thing?”

Eli swallowed.

“He told me never to talk about the baby room.”

A cold silence filled the room.

“The baby room?”

Eli nodded.

“At our old house.”

My heart sank.

“What happened there?”

The boy looked terrified.

“I saw a woman crying.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked at me.

“But she kept saying…”

May you like

His voice became quieter.

“‘Where is my baby?’”
