Chapter 11 - The Truth About Eli

The next morning, the hospital released the lockdown.

But nobody felt safe.

Because the real danger was no longer outside.

It was the truth.

Detective Harris gathered us in a private conference room.

On the table were years of documents.

Birth records.

Medical reports.

DNA tests.

Everything Luke had tried to hide.

“Mia, we have confirmed something.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Eli’s biological parents have been located.”

My eyes moved toward Eli.

He was sitting quietly beside me.

Six years old.

Carrying a secret no child should ever carry.

“Who are they?”

Harris opened a folder.

A photograph fell onto the table.

A man.

A woman.

A newborn baby.

My breath stopped.

“Eli’s real mother is alive.”

The room became silent.

“Where is she?”

“She has been searching for him for six years.”

My heart broke.

Because suddenly I understood.

Somewhere out there was another mother.

A mother who had lost her child.

Just like Rachel.

Just like me.

Eli stared at the photo.

“Is she mad at me?”

I immediately turned toward him.

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“She could never be mad at you.”

The boy looked down.

“But Dad said she gave me away.”

Everyone went silent.

Detective Harris looked at Luke.

Luke closed his eyes.

Because that was the final lie.

The one that hurt the most.

“She didn’t give you away,” Luke whispered.

Eli looked at him.

“Then why did you say that?”

Luke had no answer.

For years, he had controlled the story.

He had convinced a child that nobody wanted him.

Now the truth was finally destroying him.

“I was afraid.”

The room went quiet.

“Afraid of what?”

Luke looked at me.

“Losing everything.”

I shook my head.

“You already lost it.”

Luke looked down.

Then Detective Harris received a message.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

“We found Vanessa Reed.”

Everyone froze.

“Where?”

The detective hesitated.

“She turned herself in.”

Minutes later, Vanessa entered the room.

She looked nothing like the woman from the old photographs.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

But not dangerous.

She looked at Eli.

And tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Eli stepped back.

“Do I know you?”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“But I know you.”

She looked at Luke.

“You stole his life.”

Luke looked away.

Vanessa continued:

“And then you tried to steal another child to cover it.”

My heart tightened.

“You switched the babies?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone stared.

“Then who did?”

Vanessa looked directly at the hospital administrator.

And said:

“He did.”

The room went silent.

The hospital administrator turned pale.

“What?”

Vanessa pointed.

“He ordered the switch.”

Nobody moved.

Detective Harris reached for his radio.

But the administrator suddenly ran.
