Chapter 1 - The Baby Who Wasn’t Mine

The first thing I remember after the C-section was the sound of wheels rolling across the hospital floor.

Slow.

Steady.

Coming closer.

My eyes were barely open.

The medication made everything feel distant, like I was trapped underwater.

The ceiling lights above me blurred into white circles.

My body felt heavy.

Every breath reminded me that only hours earlier, doctors had opened me up to bring my baby into the world.

My daughter.

The child I had waited nine months to meet.

The child I had imagined holding every night.

Then I heard his voice.

“Mia.”

Luke.

My husband.

Relief washed over me.

I turned my head slightly.

He stood at the doorway, pushing a hospital bassinet.

For a moment, everything felt perfect.

My husband.

My newborn.

My family.

“I wanted you to be the first person to see her,” Luke whispered.

My eyes filled with tears.

I tried to sit up, but pain immediately forced me back down.

“Is she okay?”

Luke smiled.

A little too quickly.

“She’s perfect.”

He moved the bassinet closer.

The blanket was pale pink.

The same blanket I had picked weeks before delivery.

My hands trembled as I reached toward the tiny shape inside.

Then—

Eli stepped in front of the bassinet.

My six-year-old stepson.

He had been standing silently near the door.

I almost forgot he was there.

But the expression on his face made my heart stop.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“Eli?”

He didn’t look at me.

He looked at Luke.

“That’s not her.”

The room became silent.

Luke’s smile disappeared.

“What did you say?”

Eli swallowed.

“That’s not my sister.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

At first, I thought he was confused.

He was only six.

Maybe he didn’t understand.

“Eli,” I said softly.

“Come here.”

But he didn’t move.

His tiny hands were shaking.

“I saw Dad.”

Luke’s jaw tightened.

“Enough.”

“No!”

Eli’s voice cracked.

“I saw you take the baby.”

Luke stepped forward.

“Move away from the bassinet.”

But Eli stood his ground.

“I saw you switch them.”

My heart stopped.

The words didn’t make sense.

Switch them?

“What are you talking about?” I whispered.

Eli looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes broke something inside me.

“Mommy…”

He pointed at the newborn.

“That’s not your baby.”

Luke’s expression changed.

The loving husband disappeared.

Something colder appeared.

“Eli, don’t lie.”

“I’m not lying!”

The boy started crying.

“You told the nurse you needed to take the baby for a picture.”

Luke froze.

“And then you brought back a different baby.”

The room felt smaller.

My heart started racing.

“No…”

I looked at Luke.

“Luke?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence terrified me more than any words could have.

Then Eli whispered the sentence that changed everything.

“I saw our baby crying.”

A tear rolled down his face.

“She had a purple mark on her blanket.”

He pointed at the bassinet.

“This baby doesn’t.”

Luke moved suddenly.

Too fast.

“Stop talking.”

Eli stepped backward.

And then Luke did something I never thought I would see.

He raised his hand.

The slap echoed through the room.

Eli fell.

My scream caught in my throat.

“Luke!”

I tried to move.

Pain exploded through my abdomen.

The monitors beside my bed started beeping.

My IV line pulled tight.

Before Luke could say anything—

The door burst open.

Nurse Camille Ross rushed inside.

“What happened?”

She immediately saw Eli on the floor.

Then she saw Luke.

Then she saw the bassinet.

Her expression changed.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

She walked toward the baby.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Her eyes went directly to the ankle bracelet.

The identification band.

She touched the clasp.

And froze.

“Who opened this?”

Nobody answered.

Camille looked at Luke.

Then at me.

Her face turned pale.

“The security seal has been broken.”

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

She scanned the tag.

The machine beeped.

Once.

Twice.

Then a red warning appeared.

IDENTIFICATION ERROR.

Camille stepped back.

“This baby is not registered to this room.”

My entire world collapsed.

May you like

Because the newborn in front of me…

was not my daughter.
