Chapter 9 - The Engagement Trap

Camille had known Nora’s face before the party.

Martin told her Nora was a blackmailer trying to destroy the family.

So Camille arranged for Nora to work the most humiliating assignments.

She hoped the maid would quit.

When Nora stayed, Camille escalated.

The spilled champagne had not been accidental.

Camille deliberately stepped into Nora’s tray.

“And the riding crop?” Lucas asked.

Camille looked down.

“I lost control.”

Nora finally spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“You wanted two hundred people to watch me become afraid of you.”

Camille’s face tightened.

“You thought humiliation would make me disappear.”

Camille could not deny it.

For the first time, Nora saw something beneath her arrogance.

Fear.

Martin had manipulated Camille too.

But manipulation did not erase choice.

Lucas contacted federal investigators.

Martin’s accounts were searched.

What they found widened the case immediately.

Martin had moved millions.

But many transfers were authorized by someone above him.

A name kept appearing through coded corporations.

Arthur Sterling.

Harrison’s older brother.

There was only one problem.

Arthur Sterling had supposedly died twelve years earlier.

Yet immigration records showed him entering Switzerland six months ago.

The Sterlings had buried an empty coffin.
