Chapter 4 - Camille’s Memory

Camille stared at the photograph.

“I don’t remember.”

Lucas did not move.

“You remember enough to be afraid.”

She had been eleven when Evelyn died.

For years, Camille claimed she slept through the entire night.

Finally, under Lucas’s pressure, her story cracked.

“I heard Mom screaming.”

Camille had left her bedroom and crept downstairs.

She saw Evelyn arguing with Harrison inside the winter room.

Martin Blackwood stood near the desk.

Rose Hale was there too.

And beside the staircase stood another man whose face Camille could not see.

Then Evelyn slapped Martin.

Martin grabbed her arm.

Rose rushed forward.

Harrison shouted.

Terrified, Camille ran upstairs.

Later she heard glass shatter.

Then a car engine.

By morning, Evelyn Sterling was dead.

Lucas stared at his sister.

“Why did you lie to police?”

Camille looked at Harrison.

“Dad told me to.”

Harrison shut his eyes.

“He said if I told anyone what I saw, Lucas would go to prison.”

Lucas went still.

“Why me?”

Camille began crying.

“I never knew.”

Lucas turned toward his father.

Harrison had spent eighteen years hiding more than Evelyn’s death.

And Lucas was about to learn exactly how.
