Chapter 3 - What Evelyn Knew
“Put the gun down,” Lucas said.
Harrison claimed he was protecting his son.
“From what? A dead woman’s letter?”
“From Rose Hale.”
Nora stepped closer.
“You threatened my mother.”
“Yes,” Harrison admitted.
Lucas stared at him.
Evelyn’s letter revealed millions had been moved from the Sterling Foundation through shell companies, development projects, bankers, politicians, and judges.
Harrison had authorized transfers.
Martin had designed the legal structure.
Evelyn discovered everything.
She planned to contact federal investigators.
Lucas turned on the cassette recorder.
Static crackled.
Then Evelyn’s voice filled the abandoned room.
“If something happens to me, Harrison knows why.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
He had not heard his mother speak in eighteen years.
On the tape, Evelyn said Martin had called her unstable.
Harrison had threatened that Lucas would lose everything.
Rose wanted her to leave immediately.
Then came the sound of a door opening.
Evelyn whispered:
“He’s here.”
The recording stopped.
Lucas demanded to know who entered.
Harrison insisted he did not know.
Then Nora examined the photographs.
One image showed eleven-year-old Camille standing outside the winter room at 11:42 p.m.
The night Evelyn died.
Camille had always told police she had been asleep.
