Chapter 8: The Trap Inside the Boardroom

The boardroom fell into stunned silence.
Every executive stared at Emma.
Only twenty-four hours earlier, she had been lying in a hospital bed after giving birth.
Now she stood at the head of the Carter Holdings boardroom, holding nearly half the company's voting power.
Chairman Harold Benson slowly removed his glasses.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"You understand the consequences of what you're proposing?"
Emma met his gaze without hesitation.
"I understand them better than anyone."
She glanced around the room.
"My daughter was born yesterday."
"Within hours, someone tried to kidnap her."
"Hours later, someone fired a sniper round through her hospital window."
She let those words settle.
"I don't believe those attacks happened without help."
Her eyes swept across every director.
"I believe someone in this company has been feeding information to the people behind them."
No one spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
At the federal safe house...
Adrian watched the meeting through a secure video link provided by the FBI.
He looked at Richard, who stood beside Emma.
"I didn't know she was going to do this."
Richard answered quietly,
"Neither did I."
Claire Donovan folded her arms.
"No."
Richard smiled faintly.
"Emma planned this herself."
Back in the boardroom...
Vanessa leaned back in her chair.
She forced a calm smile.
"Those are serious accusations."
Emma nodded.
"They are."
"But I haven't accused anyone."
"Not yet."
Vanessa folded her hands.
"Then why suspend Adrian?"
Emma looked directly at her.
"Because if the attackers believe Adrian is no longer in control..."
"They'll contact the person helping them."
The room became still.
Several board members exchanged uneasy glances.
Vanessa's smile remained perfectly composed.
But beneath the table...
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
Chairman Benson cleared his throat.
"We'll proceed according to company bylaws."
He looked toward the corporate secretary.
"A temporary suspension requires a majority vote."
Emma nodded.
"I know."
She slid another envelope across the table.
"I also have proxy votes."
The secretary opened the envelope.
Her eyes widened.
"Mrs. Carter has received voting authority from..."
She stopped reading for a moment.
"...the William Carter Family Trust."
Harold Benson looked stunned.
"That's impossible."
Richard spoke for the first time.
"It became effective yesterday."
Emma now controlled fifty-three percent of the voting shares.
More than enough.
Vanessa's heart skipped.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
Harold slowly looked around the room.
"All those in favor of temporarily suspending Adrian Carter as Chief Executive Officer pending the federal investigation..."
One by one...
Hands began to rise.
Some reluctantly.
Some immediately.
Some with visible regret.
When the final vote was counted...
The decision was unanimous.
Harold lowered his head.
"The motion carries."
Emma closed her eyes briefly.
This wasn't victory.
It was necessity.
At the safe house...
Adrian watched the final vote in silence.
He wasn't angry.
He wasn't shocked.
He understood.
Claire glanced at him.
"You're taking this surprisingly well."
He gave a bitter smile.
"If suspending me helps keep Lily alive..."
"It's a small price."
He turned off the screen.
"I've made enough selfish decisions."
"I won't make another."
Emma, watching through the camera feed, heard every word.
For the first time...
She believed him.
Across the city...
Victor Kane parked outside a warehouse in Red Hook.
He entered through a rusted steel door.
The mysterious man waited inside.
His face remained hidden beneath the shadows.
Victor spoke first.
"Emma suspended Adrian."
The man smiled.
"Exactly as expected."
Victor frowned.
"You wanted that?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
The man walked toward an old wooden table covered with maps.
He pointed to a photograph of Carter Holdings Headquarters.
"When people believe power has changed hands..."
"They panic."
"And frightened people make mistakes."
Victor understood immediately.
"They'll expose themselves."
The man nodded.
"And we'll finally learn who inside Carter Holdings has been working for us..."
"...without realizing it."
Victor looked confused.
"Without realizing it?"
The man smiled.
"Everyone believes they're playing their own game."
"They don't know they're pieces on mine."
Meanwhile...
Inside the Carter Holdings boardroom...
The meeting ended.
Executives quietly left.
Only Vanessa remained.
She waited until the room was empty.
Then she removed a tiny flash drive from beneath the conference table.
She smiled.
"Still here."
She slipped it into her purse.
Turned toward the door.
And froze.
Emma was standing there.
Waiting.
"You forgot something?" Vanessa asked calmly.
Emma looked at the purse.
"No."
"I came for what you just picked up."
Vanessa's smile faded for the first time.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Emma stepped closer.
"The flash drive."
Silence.
Vanessa laughed softly.
"You can't prove anything."
Emma didn't argue.
Instead...
She looked toward the ceiling.
"Can you come in now?"
The conference room doors opened.
Three FBI agents walked inside.
Behind them came Agent Claire Donovan.
Vanessa's expression finally cracked.
Claire held up a search warrant.
"Vanessa Blake..."
"We have authorization to search your belongings."
Vanessa instinctively stepped backward.
"This is harassment."
Claire smiled faintly.
"Actually..."
"It's evidence collection."
One of the agents reached for Vanessa's purse.
Vanessa suddenly shoved him aside and ran.
She sprinted toward the emergency exit.
The alarm blared.
She pushed through the stairwell door.
Three agents chased after her.
Emma walked calmly to the conference room window.
She watched the chaos unfold below.
Thirty floors down...
Vanessa burst onto the street.
She looked over her shoulder.
No escape.
Then...
A black motorcycle pulled up beside her.
The rider wore a matte-black helmet.
He never spoke.
He simply held out a hand.
Vanessa grabbed it without hesitation.
The motorcycle roared away.
The FBI agents reached the sidewalk seconds too late.
Claire watched the motorcycle disappear into traffic.
She didn't chase it.
Instead...
She smiled.
Emma looked at her.
"You're smiling."
Claire nodded.
"Because the tracker worked."
Emma frowned.
"What tracker?"
Claire pointed toward the conference table.
"The flash drive."
Emma finally understood.
Richard smiled.
"It was never meant to stay hidden."
Emma looked at the city skyline.
Somewhere out there...
Vanessa believed she had escaped.
She had no idea...
She had just led the FBI straight to the people who had been hunting Lily from the beginning.
Far ahead, weaving through Manhattan traffic, Victor Kane glanced in his mirror.
May you like
A tiny red light blinked beneath the seat of the motorcycle.
He never saw it.
