Chapter 3: The Man Waiting Across the Street

The black SUV remained parked across from St. Gabriel Medical Center.
Its engine idled quietly beneath the steady rain.
Inside, a man wearing black leather gloves lowered his binoculars and studied the hospital entrance.
He wasn't a father.
He wasn't a reporter.
He wasn't police.
His name was Victor Kane.
For fifteen years, people in New York's criminal underworld had known him by another name.
The Cleaner.
He specialized in making problems disappear.
People.
Evidence.
Witnesses.
Entire lives.
His phone vibrated.
One message.
Target confirmed. Female infant. Room 1708. No mistakes.
Victor read it twice before deleting it.
He started the engine.
Room 1708
Emma watched Adrian through the hospital window.
He was standing outside in the rain, speaking into his phone.
His tuxedo jacket hung over one shoulder.
His wedding was supposed to have started nearly an hour ago.
Instead, he was canceling caterers.
Apologizing to guests.
Ignoring hundreds of missed calls.
Gracefully...
Or at least trying to.
Emma couldn't hear his words.
But she recognized the expression on his face.
For the first time since she'd met him...
He looked completely lost.
The baby stirred softly in her bassinet.
Emma leaned over and gently rubbed her daughter's tiny cheek.
"I'll protect you."
The newborn yawned.
"I promise."
A soft knock came at the door.
Richard Lawson entered carrying another folder.
"Mrs. Carter."
Emma smiled faintly.
"You still call me that."
Richard returned the smile.
"Until a judge tells me otherwise."
He closed the door behind him.
"I need to show you something before Adrian comes back."
Emma immediately sensed the seriousness in his voice.
Richard placed an old envelope on the bed.
Unlike the trust documents...
This envelope looked ancient.
Its edges were worn.
The wax seal had already cracked with age.
Across the front were handwritten words.
For EmmaâOnly If Adrian Ever Fails You
Emma's heartbeat quickened.
"William wrote this?"
Richard nodded.
"The day before he died."
"He instructed me never to deliver it unless..."
"...your marriage ended."
Emma slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
And a photograph.
She looked at the picture first.
It showed William Carter standing beside a much younger Emma on her wedding day.
Neither of them had noticed someone taking the picture.
William was smiling proudly.
One hand rested gently on her shoulder.
On the back of the photo, he had written:
You were always the daughter I never had.
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
She unfolded the letter.
Emma,
If this letter has reached you...
Then my greatest fear came true.
My son chose pride over love.
I failed him somewhere.
For that... I ask your forgiveness.
Emma paused.
William had always treated her kindly.
He had defended her whenever Adrian worked too late.
He remembered birthdays.
He never forgot anniversaries.
When he died unexpectedly from a heart attack...
She had mourned him like her own father.
She continued reading.
There is something Adrian never knew.
And I prayed he would never need to.
The Carter family fortune was never built by me alone.
It was built by you.
Emma frowned.
"What?"
Richard quietly nodded.
Five years before your marriage...
Your father saved Carter Holdings from bankruptcy.
He invested everything he owned.
In return...
I promised him something.
If one day my son ever betrayed you...
Half of everything carrying the Carter name would legally become yours.
Emma looked up in disbelief.
"My father?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Your father, Thomas Mitchell, quietly invested nearly every dollar he had into Carter Holdings during the financial crisis."
"He never wanted anyone to know."
"He said helping a friend wasn't something worth bragging about."
Emma felt tears forming again.
Her father had died believing Adrian loved her.
He had never revealed his sacrifice.
Richard slid another document toward her.
"This is the original shareholder agreement."
Emma stared at the signatures.
William Carter.
Thomas Mitchell.
Both dated nearly twenty years earlier.
Hidden inside the agreement was one extraordinary clause.
If Emma Mitchell married Adrian Carter, her ownership rights would remain dormant unless the marriage ended because of proven marital misconduct by Adrian Carter.
Emma whispered,
"So..."
Richard finished the sentence.
"You now legally own forty-nine percent of Carter Holdings."
Emma's mind went blank.
"Forty-nine..."
"Billion-dollar corporations rarely belong entirely to one person," Richard explained.
"William ensured that if Adrian ever destroyed his own family..."
"...he would never keep complete control of the company."
Before Emma could respondâ
The hospital room door burst open.
Adrian rushed inside.
He looked exhausted.
His phone was still ringing.
He silenced it without looking.
"It's done."
Emma looked up.
"The wedding?"
He nodded once.
"I called it off."
Richard quietly stepped back.
"I'll leave you two alone."
He picked up his briefcase.
But before leaving, he handed Adrian another sealed envelope.
"From your father."
Adrian looked surprised.
"Another one?"
Richard smiled sadly.
"He planned further ahead than most people."
Then he walked out.
For several seconds...
Neither Adrian nor Emma spoke.
Finally...
He looked at the bassinet.
"What's her name?"
Emma hesitated.
"I haven't finished the paperwork."
"You waited?"
"I wasn't sure if..."
She stopped herself.
"If what?"
"If you'd want to know her."
Adrian closed his eyes.
The guilt was unbearable.
He slowly sat beside the hospital bed.
"I've been thinking."
Emma almost laughed.
"You finally started."
He accepted the insult.
"I deserve that."
Silence settled between them.
Then he quietly asked,
"Can I choose part of her name?"
Emma looked at him carefully.
"You gave up that right six months ago."
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Yet after a long pause...
She surprised him.
"If we agree together..."
"You can."
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"The middle name?"
Emma nodded.
"What do you want?"
He looked toward the rain-covered window.
"My mother's name."
Emma blinked.
"Evelyn?"
He nodded.
"She would've loved her."
Emma looked at the sleeping baby.
Then smiled gently.
"Lily Evelyn Carter."
Adrian whispered the name.
"Lily."
It felt perfect.
He reached into the bassinet and gently touched her tiny hand.
"Hello, Lily."
The baby opened her eyes.
For just a second...
She stared directly at him.
Then...
She smiled.
It wasn't a reflex.
It wasn't gas.
It was brief.
Almost impossible.
But both parents saw it.
Emma laughed softly through her tears.
"I think she likes you."
Adrian's heart swelled.
"I hope one day..."
"...she forgives me."
Across the street...
Victor Kane watched the hospital room through a telephoto lens.
He zoomed in.
The baby.
The father.
The mother.
One happy family.
His expression never changed.
His phone rang.
"Yes."
A distorted voice spoke.
"The mother survives."
"The child doesn't."
Victor remained silent.
"The accident must happen before sunrise."
He ended the call.
Without emotion...
He opened a black duffel bag on the passenger seat.
Inside lay forged hospital credentials.
A nurse's uniform.
A syringe.
And a tiny pink teddy bear.
The kind every newborn would instinctively reach for.
Victor zipped the bag shut.
Then looked up toward Room 1708 one last time.
"Sleep while you can..."
he murmured.
May you like
"Because by morning..."
"...someone will be missing."
