Chapter 14: The Siege of Black Pine Cabin

The first burst of automatic gunfire ripped through the front windows.

Glass exploded across the living room.

"Down!"

Claire Donovan tackled Emma behind a heavy oak table just as another volley tore through the cabin.

Bullets punched into the log walls.

Splinters filled the air.

Upstairs, Lily began crying.

Adrian wrapped his body around her as he dove behind the stone fireplace.

The tiny infant screamed, terrified by the deafening noise.

"It's okay," he whispered, though his own hands were shaking. "I've got you."

Outside...

Smoke grenades rolled across the clearing.

The peaceful forest disappeared behind a wall of thick gray fog.

An FBI sniper's voice crackled over the radio.

"Multiple targets!"

"Eight..."

"No—twelve!"

"They're wearing thermal camouflage!"

A gunshot echoed.

Then silence.

The sniper never spoke again.

Claire immediately understood.

"We've lost Eagle One."

Richard Lawson slammed the cabin's heavy front shutters closed.

"They're trying to force us underground."

Claire looked toward the hidden staircase.

"No."

"They know what's in the vault."

Emma stared at her.

"You think they're here for the journal?"

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"They're here for you."

Outside the cabin...

Victor Kane stood among the trees wearing matte-black tactical gear.

He watched through a thermal scope.

"The baby is inside the fireplace room."

His earpiece crackled.

The mysterious man's calm voice answered.

"Don't harm the child."

Victor frowned.

"What about Adrian?"

"If necessary..."

"Kill him."

Victor lowered the rifle.

"And Emma?"

A long pause.

"Bring her to me alive."

Inside...

An explosion shook the cabin.

The entire building trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

One of the rear walls cracked.

An FBI tactical commander ran into the room.

"They're using military-grade breaching charges!"

Claire swore under her breath.

"How many?"

"At least fifteen hostiles."

"And they know exactly where to place the explosives."

Richard looked grim.

"Someone gave them the cabin's blueprint."

Emma immediately thought of one name.

"David Stein."

Claire nodded.

"It fits."

Adrian gently handed Lily to Emma.

"Take her."

Emma looked at him.

"What are you doing?"

He checked the magazine in a pistol one of the agents had handed him.

"I'm buying you time."

"No."

She grabbed his arm.

"You promised Lily."

"I know."

He smiled sadly.

"And I intend to keep that promise."

He leaned forward and kissed Lily's forehead.

Then, before Emma could stop him...

He ran toward the front hallway.

The attackers blew the front door inward.

Three armed men stormed inside.

Adrian fired twice.

The first attacker dropped instantly.

The second ducked behind the wall.

The third threw a flash grenade.

A blinding white light filled the cabin.

Adrian covered his eyes too late.

His ears rang violently.

Footsteps rushed toward him.

Then—

Bang!

Bang!

Bang!

Claire's pistol barked three times.

The attackers collapsed before reaching him.

"You call that buying time?" she shouted.

Adrian laughed breathlessly.

"I've had better plans."

In the basement...

Richard hurriedly picked up the leather journal and William's sealed envelope.

"We can't leave these."

Emma looked at the steel chamber.

"What about everything else?"

Richard shook his head.

"We'll come back."

His voice sounded uncertain.

As if he knew they never would.

Suddenly...

The emergency lights inside the vault turned red.

A computerized voice echoed through the underground room.

Unauthorized breach detected.

Vault lockdown in three minutes.

Claire looked upward.

"They've found another entrance."

Richard froze.

"Another entrance?"

Claire nodded.

"Old emergency tunnels."

Richard whispered,

"William never mentioned them..."

Miles away...

Inside the abandoned railway bunker...

The mysterious man watched live drone footage of the attack.

Victor's helmet camera streamed directly to his monitor.

One of his men approached.

"Sir."

"The tunnel team has entered."

He smiled.

"Excellent."

"And Emma?"

"They're driving her exactly where you predicted."

He looked toward the ancient photograph of William Carter and Thomas Mitchell.

"For thirty years..."

"I've waited for this family to open that vault."

He gently touched the photograph.

"You were both brilliant."

"But you underestimated one thing."

He smiled coldly.

"You underestimated patience."

Back inside the cabin...

The basement walls suddenly shook.

Stone dust poured from the ceiling.

Then—

A section of the wall exploded inward.

Hidden tunnel.

Four masked gunmen rushed through the opening.

Claire fired immediately.

Two fell.

The other two kept coming.

Adrian tackled one to the ground.

The attacker reached for a knife.

They struggled across the stone floor.

The blade came within inches of Adrian's throat.

Emma grabbed a heavy iron lantern and struck the attacker across the head.

He collapsed unconscious.

Adrian looked at her.

"You just saved my life."

Emma answered without thinking.

"You already saved mine."

For one brief second...

Their eyes met.

Years of anger.

Regret.

Love.

Pain.

Everything passed between them without a single word.

The moment ended when Richard cried out.

Everyone turned.

A masked man had slipped into the vault during the chaos.

He wasn't reaching for the journal.

He wasn't reaching for the documents.

He was carrying the wooden cradle.

"No!" Richard shouted.

The man sprinted toward the tunnel.

Adrian chased him.

The thief disappeared into the darkness.

Adrian followed without hesitation.

"Adrian!" Emma screamed.

No answer.

Only echoing footsteps.

Then—

A gunshot.

Silence.

Emma's heart stopped.

She started toward the tunnel, but Claire grabbed her arm.

"You can't."

"He's in there!"

"And Lily needs you alive."

Emma looked down at her daughter.

Lily had stopped crying.

She was staring toward the dark tunnel.

Her tiny eyes were fixed on the shadows.

Then...

The baby smiled.

Not at Emma.

Not at Adrian.

At someone standing inside the darkness.

A man's voice echoed softly from the tunnel.

"So..."

"After all these years..."

"We finally meet."

Emma slowly looked up.

A tall figure stepped into the dim emergency lights.

For the first time...

The mysterious leader revealed his face.

Richard gasped.

The color drained from his face.

His knees nearly gave way.

"It can't be..."

Emma looked between them.

"You know him?"

Richard whispered, barely able to breathe.

"No..."

"I buried him."

May you like

The man smiled faintly.

"You buried the wrong brother."
