Chapter 4: The Night They Came for Lily

Rain continued to fall over Brooklyn long after midnight.

The city lights shimmered across the wet streets like fractured glass.

Inside St. Gabriel Medical Center, the maternity ward had grown quiet.

Most of the newborns were asleep.

The hallways were dimly lit.

Nurses spoke in hushed voices.

It should have been the safest place in New York.

It wasn't.

Emma couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Adrian standing at the hospital door in his tuxedo.

Then she saw Vanessa's face.

Not heartbroken.

Not humiliated.

Angry.

Terrifyingly angry.

She looked down at Lily sleeping peacefully in the bassinet beside her bed.

The tiny girl made a soft sound in her sleep before curling her little fingers into a fist.

Emma smiled.

"So tiny..."

"So brave."

A sudden knock interrupted her thoughts.

A young nurse stepped inside.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Emma looked up.

"Yes?"

"We need to take your daughter for one final routine examination."

Emma frowned.

"It's after midnight."

The nurse smiled politely.

"The pediatrician asked us to finish tonight so you'll be discharged tomorrow morning."

Emma hesitated.

Every instinct inside her whispered that something wasn't right.

"I thought Dr. Collins already examined her."

The nurse's smile never changed.

"This is just hospital policy."

Emma glanced at Lily.

Then back at the nurse.

"I'll come with you."

"I'm sorry."

The nurse lowered her eyes.

"Parents aren't allowed inside the neonatal testing room."

Something about her voice...

It sounded rehearsed.

Before Emma could answer—

The door opened again.

Dr. Rebecca Collins walked in carrying a tablet.

She looked confused.

"Who's this?"

The nurse froze.

Emma immediately noticed.

"You work together, don't you?"

Dr. Collins frowned.

"I've never seen her before."

Silence.

The fake nurse slowly turned around.

She smiled.

Then sprinted toward the hallway.

Dr. Collins shouted,

"Security!"

The woman disappeared around the corner.

Within seconds, alarms echoed throughout the maternity floor.

Red lights began flashing.

Hospital staff rushed into the corridor.

Emma instinctively lifted Lily into her arms.

Her heart pounded violently.

Dr. Collins immediately locked the hospital room door.

"No one comes in."

"No one goes out."

Emma looked at her.

"What just happened?"

Dr. Collins's face had gone pale.

"That wasn't one of my nurses."

Three floors below...

Victor Kane calmly removed the stolen nurse's badge from his uniform.

His first plan had failed.

He wasn't surprised.

Professionals always prepared for backup plans.

He entered the men's restroom.

Thirty seconds later...

He emerged wearing a dark maintenance uniform.

No one looked twice.

He pushed a toolbox down the hallway toward the service elevators.

Inside the toolbox...

Wasn't equipment.

It was a compact suppressor.

A lock-picking kit.

And another fake identification card.

Meanwhile...

Adrian had just returned to Carter Manor.

The mansion was silent.

Half-finished wedding decorations still covered the grand ballroom.

Thousands of white roses had begun to wilt.

Crystal glasses remained untouched.

The wedding cake stood exactly where it had been left.

Perfect.

Abandoned.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

He answered immediately.

"This is Adrian."

A calm male voice replied.

"If you want your daughter alive..."

Adrian stopped breathing.

"...come to your father's office."

The line went dead.

Without thinking...

He sprinted upstairs.

His late father's private study had remained untouched since the funeral.

No one entered.

Not even Adrian.

Tonight...

He unlocked the door.

The room smelled of old leather and cedar wood.

Everything remained exactly as William Carter had left it.

His desk.

His books.

His favorite fountain pen.

Even the grandfather clock still ticked steadily against the wall.

Then Adrian noticed something strange.

One of the bookshelves wasn't fully closed.

His father had always insisted everything remain perfectly aligned.

Adrian pushed gently.

Click.

The bookshelf slowly swung open.

Behind it...

A hidden room.

The lights switched on automatically.

Rows of filing cabinets stretched across the room.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Financial ledgers.

Every wall was covered with carefully labeled files.

One cabinet caught Adrian's attention.

It bore a single handwritten label.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO EMMA OR MY GRANDCHILD

His heart nearly stopped.

He opened it.

Inside...

Were hundreds of pages.

Surveillance photographs.

Private investigation reports.

Bank records.

Hotel receipts.

Emails.

Every single file carried one name.

Vanessa Blake.

"What..."

Adrian whispered.

He picked up the first report.

PRIVATE INVESTIGATION

Subject: Vanessa Blake

Commissioned by: William Carter

Status: Confidential

The report began:

If you are reading this, Adrian...

Then I was right.

Vanessa Blake never loved you.

She entered Carter Holdings with a single objective.

To destroy our family from within.

Adrian's knees nearly gave out.

Back at the hospital...

Emma refused to let Lily leave her arms.

Security officers searched every floor.

No trace of the fake nurse.

No fingerprints.

No security badge.

Nothing.

Dr. Collins returned carrying disturbing news.

"The security cameras..."

Emma looked up.

"What about them?"

"They were disabled."

"For exactly seven minutes."

Emma's blood ran cold.

Someone hadn't acted on impulse.

Someone had planned this.

One of the officers approached.

"We've reviewed every entrance."

"No babies left the hospital."

Emma exhaled.

Then another officer interrupted.

"But..."

"The suspect never intended to leave."

Everyone turned.

"What do you mean?"

He placed a floor plan on the table.

"The maintenance tunnels beneath this hospital connect directly to the underground parking garage."

Silence filled the room.

"If security hadn't intervened..."

"...she would've disappeared without ever passing through the main entrance."

At that exact moment...

Victor Kane calmly walked through the underground garage.

He opened the trunk of his SUV.

Removed his maintenance uniform.

Changed into an expensive gray suit.

Within two minutes...

He looked like an ordinary businessman.

He started the engine.

Before driving away...

He made one phone call.

"It failed."

The distorted voice answered.

"I expected as much."

Victor frowned.

"You did?"

"The first attempt was only a test."

Silence.

"Now we know exactly how they're protecting the child."

Victor looked into the rearview mirror.

"So what's next?"

The voice answered without hesitation.

"We stop chasing the baby."

Victor waited.

"We make the father bring her to us."

The line disconnected.

One hour later...

Adrian burst back into Emma's hospital room.

He looked nothing like the confident billionaire who had walked in earlier that day.

His hair was soaked.

His tie was gone.

His eyes were filled with fear.

Emma stood immediately.

"What happened?"

He threw William Carter's investigation file onto the bed.

"You were right."

Emma looked confused.

"About what?"

"Everything."

He opened the folder to the first page.

Emma's face slowly lost all color.

There...

Staring back at her...

Was a photograph taken nearly two years earlier.

Adrian and Vanessa entering a luxury hotel together.

They were holding hands.

Emma closed her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

Adrian turned another page.

"This one."

Emma looked again.

The second photograph showed Vanessa.

Not with Adrian.

With a man Emma had never seen before.

The caption beneath the image read:

Meeting with Alexander Volkov

Known international financial criminal

Suspected money laundering and corporate infiltration

Emma looked up sharply.

"Who is Alexander Volkov?"

Adrian's voice trembled.

"I don't know."

He turned to the final page.

His father's handwritten note covered nearly the entire sheet.

Only one sentence was underlined in red ink.

The affair was never the real plan. Adrian was only the doorway. Emma was always the target.

At that same moment...

Emma's hospital room television suddenly switched on by itself.

Static filled the screen.

Then...

A live security camera appeared.

The image showed the hospital nursery.

Completely empty.

A distorted electronic voice echoed through the speakers.

"You stopped us tonight."

May you like

"You won't stop us tomorrow."

The screen went black.
