Chapter 5: The DNA That Changed Everything

The explosion of shattered glass echoed through the maternity ward.

Nurses screamed.

Doctors rushed into the hallway.

Within seconds, armed security officers surrounded Room 1708.

Adrian shielded Emma and Lily with his own body until the sound of falling glass finally stopped.

"Emma!"

"I'm okay!"

"What about Lily?"

Emma slowly lifted the pink blanket.

The newborn let out a tiny cry.

Alive.

Unharmed.

Adrian released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

For a brief moment, relief washed over him.

Then he noticed something.

A single bullet had embedded itself in the wall less than two feet above the hospital bed.

The sniper hadn't missed.

The shot had been aimed at the pillow.

If Adrian hadn't reacted...

Emma would already be dead.

Five minutes later...

The entire hospital floor was locked down.

Federal agents arrived before the NYPD.

Emma watched in confusion as men wearing dark jackets entered the room.

Large gold letters were printed across their backs.

FBI

The lead agent introduced herself.

"I'm Special Agent Claire Donovan."

She showed her badge.

"We're taking over this investigation."

Adrian frowned.

"This is an attempted murder."

"Why is the FBI involved?"

Claire looked directly at him.

"Because this isn't the first attack."

She placed a thick file on the table.

"Mr. Carter..."

"...someone has been investigating your family for years."

Richard Lawson quietly entered behind the agents.

His expression was unusually grim.

"I didn't expect it to happen this quickly."

Emma looked at him.

"What aren't you telling us?"

Richard sighed.

"There are things William Carter never shared with either of you."

He glanced toward Agent Donovan.

"I suppose it's time."

The FBI agent nodded.

Richard opened the file.

Inside were photographs spanning nearly ten years.

Emma.

Leaving work.

Shopping.

Meeting clients.

Walking through Central Park.

Even attending charity events.

Someone had documented nearly every movement of her adult life.

Emma stared in disbelief.

"I've been followed..."

"For almost a decade."

Richard nodded.

"So has Adrian."

Another stack of photographs appeared.

Adrian.

Board meetings.

Business dinners.

Private flights.

Golf tournaments.

Family holidays.

Everywhere.

Someone had been watching both of them long before Vanessa entered their lives.

Claire placed another photograph on top.

This one froze the room.

It showed Vanessa.

Standing beside Alexander Volkov.

The man William Carter had identified in his investigation.

But this time...

They weren't alone.

Standing between them...

Was Adrian's former divorce attorney.

David Stein.

Adrian felt sick.

"No..."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"The same lawyer who handled your divorce."

Richard slowly closed his eyes.

"I knew something about that settlement never felt right."

Adrian remembered the day he had signed the divorce papers.

David had walked into his office carrying three binders.

"Standard procedure," he had said.

"Everything has already been reviewed."

Adrian had barely glanced at the pages.

Conference calls.

Shareholder meetings.

Acquisition contracts.

He signed wherever David pointed.

Page after page.

Without reading a single clause.

Now...

He understood.

Someone had counted on his arrogance.

Emma spoke quietly.

"So the divorce..."

Claire finished her sentence.

"...was planned."

The room fell silent.

"It wasn't just the affair."

"It was an operation."

Before anyone could speak again—

Richard's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Lawson."

His expression changed instantly.

"When?"

He stood.

"I'm on my way."

He ended the call.

Emma looked worried.

"What happened?"

Richard turned toward Adrian.

"The DNA results are ready."

Two Hours Later

New York Family Court Laboratory

The atmosphere inside the secure laboratory felt colder than the hospital.

No reporters.

No cameras.

Only lawyers.

Doctors.

And federal agents.

Dr. Melissa Grant entered carrying a sealed envelope.

She placed it carefully on the conference table.

"Chain of custody has been verified."

"No evidence of contamination."

"The results are conclusive."

She looked toward Adrian.

"Mr. Carter..."

"Would you like to open it?"

His hands trembled.

"No."

He looked at Emma.

"You should."

Emma slowly broke the seal.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

She unfolded the report.

The first page contained only one sentence.

Probability of Paternity: 99.9999998%

She closed her eyes.

Not because she was surprised.

Because the truth finally had a voice.

Richard smiled softly.

"Legally..."

"Lily Carter is Adrian Carter's biological daughter."

Adrian lowered his head.

Tears slipped silently down his face.

"I missed everything."

Emma said nothing.

There was nothing left to argue about.

Nothing left to prove.

Then Dr. Grant frowned.

"There's something else."

Everyone looked up.

She turned to the second page.

"Our laboratory performs expanded genetic screening whenever a newborn enters a protected legal case."

Emma felt uneasy.

"What did you find?"

Dr. Grant hesitated.

"It concerns Lily."

Adrian's heart raced.

"Is she sick?"

"No."

Dr. Grant looked directly at both parents.

"Your daughter is perfectly healthy."

They both exhaled.

Then the doctor continued.

"But her DNA revealed something we weren't expecting."

Silence.

"What?"

Dr. Grant slid another report across the table.

"Mr. Carter..."

"You and your daughter both carry an extremely rare genetic marker."

Richard frowned.

"So?"

Dr. Grant took a deep breath.

"There are fewer than twenty documented families in the United States with this mutation."

Emma looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

The doctor answered carefully.

"It means finding a biological match becomes remarkably easy."

Claire Donovan immediately understood.

"Oh my God..."

Emma looked between them.

"What?"

Claire spoke quietly.

"If whoever is after Lily has access to genetic databases..."

"...they'll never stop finding her."

Suddenly—

An FBI technician rushed into the laboratory.

"Agent Donovan!"

She turned.

"What is it?"

He handed her a tablet.

"We intercepted encrypted communications ten minutes ago."

Claire read the message.

Her face turned pale.

Adrian stood.

"What happened?"

She slowly looked up.

"The sniper..."

"...was never targeting Emma."

Silence.

Everyone stared.

Claire swallowed.

"He was testing your reaction."

Emma felt ice run through her veins.

"What does that mean?"

Claire answered in a whisper.

"They wanted to know..."

"...which one of you would die protecting Lily."

The room became deathly quiet.

No one noticed the laboratory lights flicker once.

Then twice.

The emergency generator suddenly activated.

Darkness swallowed the room for three long seconds.

When the lights came back—

The sealed DNA report...

Was gone.

And so was Dr. Melissa Grant.

May you like

Only a single white medical glove lay on the laboratory floor.

Still stained with fresh blood.
