Chapter 17: The Truth About Emma's Mother

The silence inside Black Pine Cabin was suffocating.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Outside, armored vehicles encircled the clearing while helicopters hovered above the pine trees.

Inside...

Emma could only stare at Asher Mitchell.

The words from the loudspeaker echoed in her mind.

"Ask Asher why your mother died in his arms."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"...Is it true?"

Asher closed his eyes.

For several long seconds, he said nothing.

Then, slowly...

He nodded.

"Yes."

Emma felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.

Richard looked at Asher in disbelief.

"You promised..."

"I promised to protect the truth," Asher replied quietly.

"I never promised to hide it forever."

Emma stepped forward.

"My mother..."

"...died in your arms?"

A tear rolled down Asher's weathered face.

"She did."

Emma's hands trembled as she held Lily closer.

"Tell me everything."

"No more secrets."

Outside, the loudspeakers fell silent.

The mysterious army surrounding the cabin made no move to attack.

It was as if they, too, were waiting for the story to be told.

Claire glanced at the tactical display.

"They're holding position."

One of her agents whispered,

"They're giving us time."

Claire frowned.

"No."

"They want Emma distracted."

Asher slowly sat in the old rocking chair.

His voice became distant.

Almost haunted.

"It was your second birthday."

"The cabin was full of laughter."

"Thomas grilled hamburgers outside."

"William kept pretending he couldn't light the barbecue."

Richard smiled faintly through tears.

"He never could."

Asher nodded.

"Your mother laughed so hard she nearly dropped your birthday cake."

Emma closed her eyes.

For a brief second...

She almost remembered the sound.

"The first shot came at sunset."

Asher continued.

"No warning."

"No negotiation."

"A sniper killed one of our security men."

"Then the convoy arrived."

Emma listened without blinking.

"They wanted something."

"The Ashcroft Accord?"

Asher nodded.

"And they believed Thomas had hidden the master key."

Richard quietly added,

"They searched the cabin."

"They searched William."

"They searched me."

"But they couldn't find it."

Emma looked confused.

"Because it wasn't here?"

Asher slowly turned toward her.

"No."

"Because your mother had already hidden it."

Emma frowned.

"My mother?"

Asher nodded.

"She saw the attack coming."

"So she took the key..."

"...and hid it where no one would ever think to look."

Emma whispered,

"Where?"

Asher looked directly into her eyes.

"With you."

The room became perfectly still.

Claire took a step forward.

"What do you mean?"

Asher answered softly.

"Your mother sewed the original Ashcroft key into your favorite stuffed rabbit."

Emma's eyes widened.

"The white rabbit..."

Richard nodded.

"You carried it everywhere."

Emma's breathing became uneven.

"I remember..."

For the first time...

Fragments of memory flashed through her mind.

A white rabbit.

Her mother's perfume.

Someone whispering,

"Never let him take Bunny."

Emma staggered backward.

Adrian caught her before she fell.

"It's okay."

She shook her head.

"No..."

"I remember her."

Asher continued.

"Your mother ran into the forest with you."

"I followed."

"We almost reached the lake."

His voice broke.

"Then they caught up."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"What happened?"

"They ordered her to hand you over."

"She refused."

"So they shot her."

Emma could barely breathe.

"And you?"

"I caught her before she hit the ground."

He looked down at his hands.

"I couldn't save her."

"What did she say?"

Asher smiled sadly.

"She wasn't thinking about herself."

Emma whispered,

"What did she say?"

Asher closed his eyes.

"She looked at you..."

"...and said..."

'Promise me Emma will grow up believing love is stronger than fear.'

A single tear slipped down Emma's cheek.

Asher continued,

"I promised."

"Then she died."

The room remained silent.

Even Claire lowered her head.

Adrian gently reached for Emma's hand.

This time...

She didn't pull away.

Instead...

She squeezed it.

Not because everything was forgiven.

But because she needed someone to hold onto.

Suddenly—

The loudspeaker crackled again.

A calm voice echoed across the mountain.

"Beautiful story."

"But incomplete."

Everyone looked toward the shattered window.

The voice continued.

"You forgot the part where you betrayed Thomas Mitchell."

Emma turned sharply toward Asher.

"What does he mean?"

Asher's face darkened.

"He wants you to hate me."

"Answer the question."

Richard stepped between them.

"Asher never betrayed Thomas."

The voice laughed.

"Oh, Richard..."

"You still believe that?"

Before anyone could react—

A small drone flew through the broken window.

It landed gently on the wooden floor.

Its propellers stopped.

No explosion.

Only a small projector activated.

A holographic image appeared.

The face remained hidden in shadow.

Only the voice was clear.

"Emma."

"I'm giving you one chance."

"Bring me the journal."

"The brass key."

"And the Ashcroft records."

"In exchange..."

"I'll let everyone else live."

Claire immediately drew her pistol.

"Trace the signal!"

Her technicians began working.

"No location."

"It's bouncing through dozens of satellites."

Emma stepped toward the hologram.

"Who are you?"

The man chuckled.

"You've known me your entire life."

She frowned.

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

He pressed a button.

Another image appeared.

An old family photograph.

Thomas Mitchell.

William Carter.

Emma's mother.

Asher.

Richard.

And one more man...

Standing at the edge of the picture.

His face had been torn away.

Emma looked closer.

"My father cut him out."

The voice answered softly.

"No."

"He erased me."

Richard suddenly turned pale.

He recognized the photograph.

"Oh..."

"My God..."

Claire looked at him.

"You know who that is?"

Richard whispered,

"I thought he disappeared before Emma was born."

The voice laughed.

"I did."

He paused.

"Because Thomas made sure the world believed I was dead."

Emma's heart pounded.

"Who are you?"

The hologram slowly raised one hand.

On his ring finger...

He wore a silver ring engraved with the Ashcroft symbol.

"My name..."

He smiled.

"...is Daniel Mitchell."

Silence.

Emma looked at Asher.

"Asher..."

"...who is Daniel Mitchell?"

Asher's face filled with grief.

He whispered the answer no one expected.

"My son."

At that exact moment...

The hologram disappeared.

Every light inside the cabin went out.

The entire mountain was plunged into darkness.

Outside...

May you like

Hundreds of laser sights suddenly appeared on the cabin walls.

The final assault had begun.
