Chapter 6: The Doctor Who Vanished

The laboratory fell into chaos.

"Lock every exit!" Agent Claire Donovan shouted.

Two FBI agents sprinted into the hallway.

Another sealed the laboratory doors.

Richard Lawson stared at the empty chair where Dr. Melissa Grant had been sitting only seconds earlier.

"She couldn't have disappeared."

The laboratory had no windows.

One entrance.

One exit.

No hidden doors.

Yet the doctor—and the original DNA report—had vanished.

Emma instinctively pulled Lily closer against her chest.

The baby slept peacefully, completely unaware that she had become the center of a conspiracy.

An FBI forensic team swept through the room.

The only evidence they found was the white latex glove lying on the floor.

Claire crouched beside it.

"There."

She pointed toward a tiny red stain.

"Blood."

Within minutes, a forensic technician returned.

"Agent..."

He looked uneasy.

"The blood doesn't belong to Dr. Grant."

Claire frowned.

"Then whose is it?"

The technician swallowed.

"We ran it through the federal database."

"It belongs to a man named Victor Kane."

Adrian looked confused.

"Who's that?"

Claire's expression darkened.

"A contract assassin."

"Wanted in seven countries."

"Linked to more than forty disappearances."

Emma's heart skipped a beat.

"The same man who came after Lily?"

Claire nodded.

"We believe so."

Meanwhile...

Three floors below the laboratory...

Victor Kane calmly walked through the underground parking garage.

He was no longer wearing hospital clothes.

Now he looked like an elderly janitor.

Gray wig.

Thick glasses.

Stooped shoulders.

No one gave him a second glance.

Inside a locked maintenance cart...

Dr. Melissa Grant lay unconscious.

Alive.

Her wrists were bound with plastic restraints.

Victor checked her pulse.

Still steady.

He wasn't paid to kill her.

Only to take what she knew.

The original DNA report rested safely inside a waterproof document tube.

His phone vibrated.

One message.

Bring the doctor. Destroy the report after extraction.

Victor typed a reply.

Understood.

Back inside the laboratory...

The backup DNA records remained secure in the hospital's encrypted system.

Richard let out a slow breath.

"They stole the original."

"But not the truth."

Emma looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"The court-certified digital copy has already been filed."

Adrian looked relieved.

"So the report still stands?"

"Legally..."

"Yes."

Claire added,

"But whoever ordered this kidnapping wasn't trying to change the result."

"They wanted information."

Emma frowned.

"What information?"

Claire looked toward Lily.

"The genetic marker."

Silence settled over the room.

"There are private organizations willing to pay millions for rare genetic research."

Richard nodded.

"And some people will kill to control it."

Adrian felt sick.

"This isn't about my company anymore."

"No."

Claire answered quietly.

"It's about your daughter."

That afternoon...

The FBI relocated Emma and Lily to a federal safe house outside Manhattan.

The location was classified.

Even hospital staff weren't told where they had gone.

A convoy of three armored SUVs traveled different routes.

Helicopters monitored the highways.

For the first time in her life...

Emma felt like she was living inside someone else's nightmare.

She looked down at Lily.

The baby stretched sleepily before opening her tiny eyes.

Emma smiled despite everything.

"You picked a dramatic way to enter the world."

The safe house looked nothing like Emma expected.

Instead of a military compound...

It was an old stone estate hidden among tall pine trees in Westchester County.

The property belonged to the U.S. Marshals Service.

High fences surrounded the grounds.

Security cameras covered every angle.

Inside, however...

It felt almost like a home.

A fireplace.

Wooden floors.

A nursery already prepared.

Agent Claire smiled.

"Most babies sleep better somewhere that doesn't feel like a prison."

Emma whispered,

"Thank you."

Later that evening...

Adrian arrived under FBI escort.

The moment he stepped inside, Lily began crying.

Emma handed the baby to him without speaking.

The crying stopped almost instantly.

Adrian laughed softly.

"I guess she already knows my voice."

Emma watched quietly.

For six months...

She had imagined this moment countless times.

Sometimes she imagined screaming at him.

Sometimes slamming the door in his face.

Instead...

She simply watched a father hold his daughter.

And for the first time in years...

She saw no billionaire.

No CEO.

Only a frightened man trying to learn how to be a dad.

"Can I ask you something?" Adrian said.

Emma nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She was silent for a long moment.

Then she walked toward the fireplace.

"When I found out I was pregnant..."

"I drove to your office."

Adrian frowned.

"You did?"

She nodded.

"I was going to tell you everything."

"What happened?"

Emma looked into the flames.

"I saw you kissing Vanessa."

The room became painfully quiet.

"It wasn't a rumor."

"It wasn't a photograph."

"I saw it with my own eyes."

Adrian closed his eyes.

He remembered that afternoon.

He had been drinking after another argument.

Vanessa had kissed him.

He hadn't stopped her.

It lasted only seconds.

But it had destroyed twelve years of marriage.

"I came upstairs with the ultrasound picture in my purse."

Emma's voice cracked.

"I threw it away before I got home."

Adrian couldn't breathe.

"You were carrying Lily..."

"And I never knew."

Emma nodded once.

"I decided my daughter deserved a peaceful life."

"Not parents fighting over whether she was wanted."

Adrian looked down at Lily sleeping in his arms.

"I would've wanted her."

Emma met his eyes.

"I know that now."

The words hurt more than any accusation.

Because they came too late.

Miles away...

Inside an abandoned warehouse along the Brooklyn waterfront...

Victor Kane walked into a dimly lit room.

Dr. Melissa Grant sat tied to a chair.

Across from her stood a man whose face remained hidden in the shadows.

He slowly opened the DNA report.

He read every page carefully.

Then smiled.

"So..."

He whispered.

"It really is her."

Dr. Grant stared at him.

"You'll never get near that child."

The man ignored her.

Instead, he removed an old photograph from his coat pocket.

It showed William Carter standing beside another man thirty years earlier.

The hidden man's finger rested on the second face.

"You stole something from my family, William."

His voice was calm.

"Now..."

"I'm taking it back."

He looked toward Victor.

"Prepare the next phase."

Victor nodded.

"What about Adrian?"

The man smiled coldly.

"He still believes this is about revenge."

A long pause.

"It isn't."

He folded the photograph and slipped it back into his pocket.

"It's about an inheritance that disappeared thirty years ago."

As Victor turned to leave, the mysterious man spoke one final sentence.

"And make sure Emma stays alive."

Victor looked surprised.

"The mother?"

"Yes."

May you like

The man's eyes hardened.

"She is the only person who can lead us to what we're really looking for."
