Chapter 2: The Trust No One Was Supposed to Find

The bouquet lay forgotten on the hospital floor.

White orchids scattered across the polished tiles.

No one moved to pick them up.

Vanessa stared at Richard Lawson as if she had misheard every word.

"...One point four billion dollars?"

Richard nodded calmly.

"The current estimated value."

Adrian's voice was barely audible.

"My father never mentioned another trust."

"He wasn't supposed to."

Richard clicked open his briefcase again and removed a thick navy-blue folder stamped with a silver seal.

CARTER FAMILY PRIVATE TRUST

CONFIDENTIAL

Adrian recognized the seal immediately.

It belonged to his late father, William Carter, founder of Carter Holdings.

His hands began to shake.

"My father's estate was settled five years ago."

"It was," Richard replied.

"But not completely."

Emma remained silent.

She wasn't surprised.

Not anymore.

She had discovered the trust only two months earlier.

At first, she thought it was a mistake.

Then Richard had shown her the original documents.

William Carter had created two separate estates.

The public estate...

And the private one.

The public estate had gone to Adrian.

The private trust had remained sealed under one condition.

It would only be opened if Adrian Carter had a biological child.

No child.

No trust.

No exceptions.

Vanessa finally found her voice.

"This is absurd."

"There has to be some mistake."

Richard looked at her politely.

"And you are...?"

Vanessa straightened her shoulders.

"I'm Adrian's fiancée."

Richard offered a courteous smile.

"I see."

He closed the folder.

"Then legally, this matter does not concern you."

Her face flushed crimson.

"I'm about to marry him!"

Richard's expression never changed.

"As of this moment..."

"...Mr. Carter's pending marriage may create additional legal complications."

Vanessa stared.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," Richard replied evenly, "that if the child is confirmed as Mr. Carter's biological daughter, any transfer of marital assets after a remarriage could become subject to litigation involving the trust."

The room fell silent again.

Vanessa slowly turned toward Adrian.

"You knew about this?"

Adrian looked stunned.

"I swear I didn't."

Richard placed another document on the bedside table.

"This is the original letter your father wrote."

"He instructed me to give it to you only after the trust was activated."

Adrian hesitated before taking the envelope.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Across the front, written in William Carter's unmistakable handwriting, were six words:

To My Son—When You Finally Become a Father

Adrian swallowed hard.

His father had been dead for five years.

Yet somehow...

It felt as though he were standing in the room.

He slowly unfolded the letter.

Adrian,

If you're reading this, then life has given you the greatest responsibility a man can ever receive.

A child.

Companies can be rebuilt.

Money can be earned again.

Reputation can recover.

But once a father fails his child...

That wound may last forever.

If you are reading this beside your wife, then treasure her.

If you are reading this after losing her...

Ask yourself whether your pride cost your family.

I made that mistake once.

Don't repeat it.

Adrian's vision blurred.

He remembered his father saying those exact words years ago.

"Business will make you rich."

"Family will make you worth something."

Back then, he had laughed.

Now...

Those words felt like a verdict.

Emma watched quietly.

For the first time since Adrian had entered the room...

She saw regret replacing arrogance.

Not excuses.

Not anger.

Regret.

But regret couldn't erase six months.

It couldn't erase betrayal.

It certainly couldn't erase another woman standing in a wedding dress only a few feet away.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed Adrian's arm.

"We're leaving."

He didn't move.

"Adrian!"

Still nothing.

She lowered her voice.

"This woman is manipulating you."

Emma smiled faintly.

"I don't need to."

"The truth is doing all the work."

Vanessa's eyes flashed with hatred.

"You planned this from the beginning."

Emma looked directly at her.

"If I wanted revenge..."

"I would've interrupted your ceremony."

"I didn't."

"You called me."

Vanessa had no answer.

A soft knock interrupted the tension.

The door opened.

Dr. Rebecca Collins entered with a tablet in her hands.

She smiled warmly at Emma.

"How are our two favorite girls doing?"

Emma smiled.

"We're fine."

The doctor looked toward Adrian.

"You must be the father."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"I... think so."

Dr. Collins frowned slightly.

"You weren't here for the delivery?"

"No."

She looked surprised but chose not to comment.

Instead, she checked the baby's heartbeat.

Everything was normal.

Then she turned to Adrian.

"Would you like to hold your daughter again?"

The words hit him unexpectedly.

Your daughter.

Not the baby.

Not the child.

Your daughter.

He nodded almost instinctively.

Emma carefully placed the newborn back into his arms.

This time...

He held her with more confidence.

The little girl stretched lazily before opening her eyes for the very first time.

Deep blue.

Almost gray.

Exactly like his own.

Adrian froze.

The doctor smiled.

"Well..."

"I don't think genetics could make it any more obvious."

Vanessa quickly looked away.

Richard quietly cleared his throat.

"There is another issue we need to discuss."

Adrian looked exhausted already.

"What now?"

"The trust cannot be released until paternity is legally confirmed."

Vanessa immediately brightened.

"There."

"See?"

"It isn't proven."

Richard nodded.

"Correct."

"Which is why I have already arranged a court-certified DNA test."

Adrian looked surprised.

"So soon?"

"The sample can be collected today."

"The laboratory has been instructed to prioritize the results."

"Forty-eight hours."

Emma nodded.

"I've already agreed."

Richard turned toward Adrian.

"Will you?"

Adrian looked down at the sleeping baby.

He gently brushed one finger across her tiny hand.

She immediately wrapped her fingers around his again.

His heart clenched.

"Yes."

"I'll do it."

Vanessa stepped in front of him.

"No."

Both men looked at her.

She forced a smile.

"This is insane."

"You don't owe anyone a DNA test."

Richard raised an eyebrow.

"Actually..."

"He does."

"The trust agreement requires it."

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"Forget the trust."

"We're getting married today."

Adrian slowly lifted his eyes.

For the first time all morning...

He truly looked at her.

Not as his fiancée.

Not as the woman he planned to marry.

But as someone standing between him...

...and his child.

"I can't."

Her face went pale.

"What?"

"I can't marry you today."

Silence.

"So postpone it."

"I can't."

"Adrian!"

"My daughter was born today."

The words echoed through the room.

My daughter.

He had never said them before.

But somehow...

They felt completely natural.

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

"You've known this baby for ten minutes!"

He looked down at the newborn sleeping peacefully against his chest.

Then answered quietly,

"I've already missed six months."

"I won't miss another day."

Vanessa felt the world slipping away.

Everything she had worked for.

The wedding.

The Carter name.

The fortune.

The future.

All because of one tiny baby.

She turned toward Emma.

There was no smile left on her face.

Only cold hatred.

"You think you've won?"

Emma met her gaze without fear.

"I wasn't trying to win."

"I was trying to survive."

Vanessa leaned closer.

"So was I."

Then she walked out of the hospital room without another word.

No one noticed that before leaving...

She quietly slipped her phone from her purse.

Opened a private contact.

And sent a single message.

The baby is alive. Change the plan.

Less than five seconds later...

A reply appeared.

Understood. It will be handled tonight.

Miles away, inside a black SUV parked across the street from the hospital, a man lowered a pair of military-grade binoculars.

May you like

He looked up toward Emma's hospital window.

Then started the engine.
