Chapter 16: The Empty Grave

No one spoke.

The words echoed through the underground chamber.

"William Carter's coffin... is gone."

Emma stared at Claire.

"What do you mean... gone?"

Claire looked down at the message on her phone, hoping she had misread it.

"I mean exactly that."

"Someone broke into the Carter family mausoleum less than an hour ago."

"They opened William Carter's crypt..."

"...and the coffin disappeared."

Adrian's face drained of color.

"My father's grave has been guarded since his funeral."

Claire nodded.

"It was."

"The security footage was erased."

"The guards were found unconscious."

"No fingerprints."

"No tire tracks."

"Professional."

Richard leaned heavily against the stone wall.

"This isn't about William's body."

Everyone looked at him.

"It's about what was buried with him."

Emma frowned.

"There was something inside the coffin?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"I prayed no one would ever discover it."

Asher Mitchell looked at Richard with disappointment.

"You should have told them years ago."

Richard's voice cracked.

"It wasn't my secret."

"No."

Asher answered.

"It became yours the day Thomas died."

Emma stepped between them.

"Enough."

"No more half-truths."

"No more secrets."

She looked at both men.

"My daughter has been hunted since the day she was born."

"People have died."

"I deserve the truth."

The underground chamber became silent.

Finally...

Richard nodded.

"You're right."

He slowly walked toward the old wooden cradle.

Running his fingers across the intertwined Carter and Mitchell family crests.

"When William Carter died..."

"He wasn't buried alone."

Emma frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Richard reached beneath the mattress of the cradle.

Hidden inside was a narrow compartment.

He removed a yellowed photograph.

William Carter stood beside Thomas Mitchell.

Between them...

A young woman held a newborn baby.

Emma recognized her immediately.

"My mother."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

Emma looked at the infant.

"Who's the baby?"

Richard answered quietly.

"You."

Emma smiled faintly.

"I know."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

He turned the photograph over.

On the back...

In Thomas Mitchell's handwriting...

Were six simple words.

Emma's second birthday.

Emma froze.

Her smile disappeared.

"My second birthday?"

Richard nodded.

"You've seen this photograph before."

Emma frowned.

"No."

"You don't remember."

Asher stepped closer.

"Because your memories of those years were intentionally erased."

The room became deathly quiet.

Claire looked stunned.

"Erased?"

Asher nodded.

"Not completely."

"Suppressed."

Emma laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

Asher looked directly into her eyes.

"Is it?"

"When you first arrived at this cabin..."

"You said it felt familiar."

"You remembered the lake."

"The porch."

"The smell of pine trees."

"You remembered things no one had mentioned."

Emma couldn't answer.

Because he was right.

Adrian gently placed a hand on Emma's shoulder.

She barely noticed.

Her thoughts were racing.

"My father..."

"He made me forget?"

Richard's eyes filled with regret.

"Thomas believed forgetting was the only way to keep you alive."

Claire interrupted.

"What exactly did she forget?"

Asher answered.

"The night everything changed."

Silence.

Outside, the distant sound of helicopters echoed over the forest.

Inside...

No one moved.

Asher slowly sat in the old rocking chair.

"Thirty years ago..."

"The Carter and Mitchell families created something."

"It wasn't a company."

"It wasn't a bank account."

"It was an agreement."

Emma listened carefully.

"The Ashcroft Accord."

Richard nodded.

"I've heard that name once."

Asher continued.

"It protected evidence."

"Evidence powerful enough to destroy governments..."

"...and the people who financed them."

Claire frowned.

"What kind of evidence?"

Asher looked toward the second vault.

"Financial records."

"Intelligence files."

"Names."

"Accounts."

"Everything stolen during the collapse of the Soviet Union."

Adrian looked confused.

"My father was a businessman."

"He wasn't a spy."

"No."

Asher smiled sadly.

"He became a guardian."

Emma slowly sat beside Lily's carrier.

"My parents never told me any of this."

"They couldn't."

Asher replied.

"Because after your second birthday..."

"Someone came for you."

The room fell silent again.

Emma's heartbeat quickened.

"What happened?"

Asher looked at Richard.

"You tell her."

Richard took a deep breath.

"It was your birthday party."

"Black Pine Cabin."

"Thomas."

"William."

"Your mother."

"My wife."

"We were all here."

"Laughing."

"Eating cake."

"Watching you run around this very room."

Emma closed her eyes.

A faint image flashed through her mind.

Colored balloons.

A blue ribbon.

Someone singing.

Then...

Darkness.

Richard continued.

"Just after sunset..."

"Three black vehicles drove through the trees."

"They weren't there to negotiate."

"They came to kill everyone."

Emma whispered,

"My parents never mentioned that."

"They survived."

Richard answered.

"But not everyone did."

Asher lowered his head.

"My wife..."

"Elena..."

"...died protecting you."

Emma stared at him.

"What?"

Asher looked at Lily.

"She carried you into the woods."

"She knew they weren't after her."

"They wanted Thomas's daughter."

"She refused to let them have you."

His voice broke.

"They shot her before she reached the lake."

Emma felt tears fill her eyes.

"I... I don't remember."

"You weren't supposed to."

Suddenly—

A sharp electronic beep echoed from Claire's tablet.

She looked down.

Her expression changed instantly.

"That's impossible."

Richard looked up.

"What?"

Claire turned the screen toward everyone.

A satellite image of Black Pine Cabin.

Red dots.

One...

Two...

Ten...

Twenty...

Then more.

Dozens of heat signatures were surrounding the mountain.

Not retreating.

Returning.

Adrian stood immediately.

"They're coming back."

Claire zoomed in.

"No."

Her voice became grim.

"This isn't the same team."

Emma looked at the screen.

Military vehicles.

Armored transports.

Helicopters.

"This is an army."

Asher closed his eyes.

"So..."

"He finally came himself."

Emma frowned.

"Who?"

Before Asher could answer...

A deep voice echoed from powerful loudspeakers outside the cabin.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost polite.

"Emma Mitchell..."

"I've waited thirty years to meet you."

The entire mountain seemed to vibrate.

The voice continued.

"You have something that belongs to me."

Emma stepped toward the cabin entrance.

"Who are you?"

The answer came with chilling certainty.

"I am..."

A long pause.

"The real Alexander Volkov."

Every face in the room turned toward Asher.

He slowly shook his head.

"No..."

"That's exactly what he wants you to believe."

The loudspeaker crackled again.

Then the stranger spoke one sentence that made Emma's blood run cold.

"Ask Asher..."

"...why your mother died in his arms."

Silence.

Emma slowly turned toward Asher.

May you like

His face had gone completely pale.

He didn't deny it.
