Chapter 5 - The Divorce Papers and the Hidden Promise

For the first time in years, Ricardo Valente entered a place where nobody treated him like a powerful businessman.
Beatriz’s home was not filled with expensive artwork.
There were no marble floors.
No private security.
No assistants waiting for instructions.
There was only a quiet house filled with memories.
And that made him uncomfortable.
Because every corner reminded him of something he had missed.
A drawing on the refrigerator.
A collection of children’s books on a shelf.
A small pair of shoes near the entrance.
A life that had continued without him.
Beatriz watched him carefully.
She noticed everything.
The sadness.
The regret.
The guilt.
But she had learned something important over the years.
Regret was easy.
Taking responsibility was not.
“You want to know what happened after I left,” Beatriz said.
Ricardo looked at her.
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Then you need to hear everything.”
They sat across from each other.
For years, Ricardo had imagined this conversation.
But he never imagined feeling this powerless.
“When I left your house that night, I didn’t know where I was going.”
Beatriz looked toward the window.
“I had no money.”
Ricardo lowered his eyes.
“I thought you would come back.”
She looked at him.
“I waited.”
The words hit him.
“I waited for three weeks.”
A painful silence filled the room.
“I thought you were angry.”
“I thought you needed time.”
“I thought eventually you would call.”
Her voice became quieter.
“But you never did.”
Ricardo opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he knew why.
His pride had been stronger than his love.
“I found out I was pregnant two months later.”
Ricardo looked up.
His eyes widened.
“What?”
Beatriz nodded.
“I was terrified.”
She remembered that moment.
The fear.
The uncertainty.
The loneliness.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
She looked at him.
“Because your father came to see me.”
Ricardo froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
The room changed.
“What did he say?”
Beatriz took a deep breath.
“He said you had already moved on.”
Ricardo shook his head.
“That’s not true.”
“I know that now.”
Her expression became painful.
“But back then, I believed him.”
Ricardo felt anger rising.
“What did he offer you?”
“Money.”
The answer was simple.
Cold.
“He wanted me to disappear.”
Ricardo stood immediately.
“My father would never…”
Beatriz interrupted.
“He did.”
The confidence in her voice stopped him.
“He told me the Valente family could not have a scandal.”
She looked down.
“He said a woman who couldn’t give you children had no reason to stay.”
Ricardo felt sick.
Because those words sounded exactly like the things he had allowed people to say.
“What happened next?”
Beatriz smiled sadly.
“I refused.”
She placed her hand over her heart.
“I was hurt, Ricardo. But I still loved you.”
A tear appeared in her eye.
“And then I found out I was carrying your children.”
Ricardo sat silently.
The truth was becoming heavier with every sentence.
“I decided my children would know they were loved.”
Beatriz looked toward the hallway.
“That became my promise.”
A promise she kept.
A promise he never knew existed.
Later that evening, Ricardo returned to his office.
He could not stop thinking.
About Beatriz.
About the children.
About his father.
He opened old company records.
He searched through archived documents.
Anything connected to the years when Beatriz disappeared.
After hours of searching, he found something strange.
An old email.
Sent from his father’s assistant.
The subject line was simple:
“Beatriz Situation Resolved.”
Ricardo’s heart stopped.
He opened it.
Inside was a short message.
“She has agreed to leave. The problem is handled.”
Ricardo stared at the screen.
His hands began shaking.
Because he never agreed to this.
He never asked for this.
Someone had made decisions about his life without him.
And someone had stolen years from him.
Then another file appeared.
A scanned document.
A letter.
Written by Beatriz.
Addressed to Ricardo.
Date: Seven years earlier.
Ricardo opened it.
The first sentence destroyed him.
“Ricardo, I don’t know if you will ever read this, but I need you to know you have children.”
He stopped breathing.
She had tried to tell him.
She had tried.
The letter continued.
“I don’t want revenge. I only want our children to know their father.”
Ricardo closed his eyes.
A painful realization came over him.
May you like
He had not lost his family because of fate.
He had lost them because he trusted the wrong people.
