Chapter 16 - Beatriz’s Last Decision
Ricardo arrived at Beatriz’s house immediately.
She knew from his expression.
Something had happened.
“What is it?”
He handed her the document.
Beatriz looked at it.
Her face changed.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
“Where did you get this?”
“I received it anonymously.”
She sat down.
Ricardo watched her carefully.
“You knew.”
Beatriz closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
Not because it was unexpected.
Because he was tired of discovering secrets.
“What is it?”
Beatriz looked at him.
“Clara was born with complications.”
Ricardo waited.
“The doctors were worried she would not survive.”
His expression softened.
“But she did.”
Beatriz nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then what is the secret?”
She looked down.
“The hospital contacted your family.”
Ricardo froze.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Beatriz hesitated.
“Because Clara needed specialized treatment.”
Ricardo stared.
“And they refused?”
Her silence answered.
Anger filled him.
“My father refused medical care for my daughter?”
“No.”
Beatriz shook her head.
“He offered help.”
Ricardo stopped.
“Then what?”
“He offered help only if I signed an agreement.”
“What agreement?”
“That I would disappear permanently.”
The room became silent.
Ricardo felt sick.
His father had used his granddaughter’s life as leverage.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“He knew all along?”
“Yes.”
Ricardo felt broken.

“You should have told me.”
Beatriz looked at him.
“When?”
The question stopped him.
“When everyone around you told you I was the problem?”
Silence.
“When your family had power and I had nothing?”
She shook her head.
“I was protecting my children.”
Ricardo lowered his eyes.
“I understand.”
“No.”
Her voice was gentle.
“But you are beginning to.”
That night, Ricardo made a final decision.
