Chapter 14 - The Major Betrayal
Within hours, the entire story changed.
The same people who had defended Beatriz now questioned her.
News channels repeated Juliana’s accusation.
Online discussions exploded.
People wanted answers.
Ricardo watched the reports in disbelief.
“She’s trying to destroy Beatriz.”
His lawyer nodded.
“Yes.”
“But why?”
The lawyer looked serious.
“Because when someone has nothing left to lose, they become dangerous.”
Juliana appeared on television.
She looked emotional.
Not angry.
Not aggressive.
Carefully hurt.
A performance Ricardo had seen many times before.
“I never wanted to hurt anyone,” she told the interviewer.
“I loved Ricardo.”
She paused.
“But I discovered something disturbing.”
The interviewer leaned forward.
“What?”
Juliana looked directly into the camera.
“Beatriz knew Ricardo was looking for her.”
A shocked reaction spread.
“She could have contacted him.”
The interviewer asked:
“Are you saying she deliberately kept the children away?”
Juliana lowered her eyes.
“I’m saying people deserve to know the whole story.”
Ricardo immediately called Beatriz.
She answered.
“I saw.”
Her voice was calm.
“I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
Beatriz sighed.
“Ricardo, don’t apologize for her actions.”
“She is trying to take everything from you.”
“No.”
Beatriz looked toward her children.
“She is trying to make people doubt me.”
A pause.
“But I have something she doesn’t.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
The next day, Beatriz revealed something she had hidden for years.
She brought out a box.
Inside were dozens of letters.
All addressed to Ricardo.
All sent during the years they were separated.
Ricardo looked shocked.
“These…”
“I wrote one every month.”
His eyes widened.
“But I never received them.”
“I know.”
Beatriz handed him copies.
“They were returned.”
Every envelope had the same stamp.
Recipient refused delivery.
Ricardo stared.
Someone had blocked every attempt.
Someone had made sure he believed she disappeared willingly.
Then Beatriz revealed the final piece of evidence.
A recording.
An old voice message.
From the night she left.
Ricardo pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then he heard his own voice.
Younger.
Angrier.
Broken.
“Maybe we should stop pretending this is working.”
Ricardo froze.
He remembered the argument.
But then came something he did not remember.
Beatriz’s voice.
“Ricardo, I’m pregnant.”
The recording continued.
Silence.
Then his younger voice.
A sentence that destroyed him.
“I can’t do this anymore.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth was finally clear.
Ricardo had been manipulated.
But he had also wounded the woman who loved him.
That evening, Ricardo confronted Juliana.
She opened the door.
“You heard it.”
“Yes.”
She looked afraid.
“Ricardo…”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“That was the moment everything changed.”
Juliana began crying.
“I was afraid.”
“So was Beatriz.”
“I loved you.”
“So did she.”
Silence.
Then Ricardo said:
“You didn’t lose me because Beatriz returned.”
Juliana looked at him.
“You lost me because you helped destroy the truth.”
For the first time, Juliana understood.
