Chapter 12 - The Three Children’s Secret

The next morning, Ricardo could not stop thinking about the document.
His signature.
His name.
His handwriting.
But he had no memory of signing anything.
He contacted his lawyer immediately.
“I need you to investigate this.”
The lawyer studied the document.
“This is real.”
Ricardo’s stomach tightened.
“What does it mean?”
The lawyer hesitated.
“It means at some point, you agreed to something.”
“No.”
Ricardo shook his head.
“I would remember.”
“Not necessarily.”
The lawyer pointed at the date.
“You were under extreme pressure during this period.”
Ricardo looked away.
The years after his company nearly collapsed.
The years when his father controlled every decision.
The years when he was drinking heavily and barely sleeping.
Could he have signed something without understanding?
Meanwhile, Beatriz noticed something unusual.
Mateo had become quiet.
Too quiet.
She found him sitting alone outside.
“What happened?”
He shrugged.
“Nothing.”
She sat beside him.
“Mateo.”
He looked down.
“People at school said Dad only came back because everyone found out.”
Beatriz felt her heart break.
“Is that what you think?”
Mateo didn’t answer.
And that silence hurt.
Later that day, Ricardo visited.
He immediately noticed something was wrong.
“What happened?”
Beatriz looked at him.
“Your son is afraid.”
The word hurt.
“My son?”
“Yes.”
Ricardo sat down.
“Why?”
“Because he thinks you only came because you were forced.”
Ricardo looked toward Mateo.
The boy avoided his eyes.
Ricardo walked closer.
“I need to tell you something.”
Mateo looked up.
“I don’t deserve your trust yet.”
The boy seemed surprised.
“But I want to earn it.”
A pause.
“I cannot change the years I missed.”
Ricardo swallowed.
“But I can change what happens next.”
Mateo watched him.
“You really mean that?”
“Yes.”
“Even if it’s hard?”
Ricardo nodded.
“Especially if it’s hard.”
That evening, something unexpected happened.
Sofia brought Ricardo a small box.
“What is this?”
She smiled.
“Something Mom kept.”
Inside was a collection of drawings.
Hundreds of them.
Ricardo opened the first one.
A child’s drawing.
A family.
A father.
A mother.
Three children.
His hands trembled.
“When did she make these?”
Sofia answered:
“Mom said one day you might want to see them.”
Ricardo looked at Beatriz.
She looked away.
Because even after everything…
A part of her had still hoped he would return.
But the biggest secret was still hidden.
That night, Ricardo received a call from the hospital where the children were born.
The nurse on the phone sounded nervous.
“Mr. Valente, I’m calling because there is something you need to know.”
Ricardo stood immediately.
“What?”
“There was another record.”
“What record?”
A pause.
“One that was removed from the official file.”
His heart started racing.
“What did it say?”
The nurse lowered her voice.
“It concerns the birth of your children.”
Ricardo gripped the phone.
“Tell me.”
The nurse hesitated.
“Your children were not the only thing hidden that night.”
Silence.
“What else was hidden?”
The answer came slowly.
“Someone else was there.”
Ricardo felt cold.
“Who?”
The nurse whispered:
“Your father.”
The call ended.
And Ricardo realized the truth was deeper than he ever imagined.
May you like
Because the secret was not only that he had children.
The secret was that someone had spent years making sure he never found them.
