Chapter 13 - The Evidence Hidden for Years

Ricardo stayed awake until sunrise.
The nurse’s words repeated in his mind.
“Your father was there.”
For years, Ricardo had believed his father was simply a controlling man.
A powerful businessman who cared more about reputation than emotions.
But this was different.
If his father had been present when his children were born, then he had not only manipulated the situation.
He had actively participated in destroying Ricardo’s family.
Ricardo arrived at the old Valente mansion before anyone else.
The place had belonged to his father for decades.
A symbol of power.
A symbol of control.
But now it felt like a prison filled with secrets.
He walked into the old office.
The same room where his father had made decisions that changed countless lives.
Ricardo opened every drawer.
Checked every cabinet.
Looked through every file.
Hours passed.
Then he found something hidden behind a wooden panel.
A small metal box.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
And a handwritten journal.
Ricardo recognized the handwriting immediately.
His father’s.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The first pages contained business notes.
Nothing unusual.
Then he reached a date.
Seven years earlier.
The day Beatriz disappeared.
His father had written:
“Ricardo must believe this decision was his own.”
Ricardo froze.
He continued reading.
“If he believes others forced him, he will fight. If he believes he chose this path, he will accept it.”
The room became silent.
Because his father had understood him.
He had manipulated not only his actions.
He had manipulated his thoughts.
The next sentence destroyed him.
“Juliana is useful. She understands ambition.”
Ricardo closed the journal.
Juliana.
His father.
They had worked together.
When Ricardo returned home, he found Beatriz waiting.
She immediately knew something happened.
“What did you find?”
He placed the journal on the table.
She read the pages.
Her expression changed.
“He planned everything.”
Ricardo nodded.
“Yes.”
Beatriz sat down slowly.
“For years, I thought I lost you because you stopped loving me.”
Her voice cracked.
“But I never imagined someone was controlling every step.”
Ricardo looked at her.
“I still made choices.”
She looked up.
“What?”
“I still allowed it.”
A painful silence.
“I want you to understand something, Beatriz.”
She waited.
“I am not going to use my father as an excuse.”
That surprised her.
“Because even if he manipulated me…”
Ricardo swallowed.
“I hurt you.”
Those words mattered.
Because for the first time, Ricardo was not trying to escape blame.
He was accepting it.
Meanwhile, Juliana realized the situation was becoming dangerous.
Ricardo had found evidence.
Beatriz had the children.
The public supported them.
Everything she built was collapsing.
Adrian arrived at her apartment.
“You need to leave.”
Juliana looked at him.
“Leave?”
“You can’t win this.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Do you know what I sacrificed?”
Adrian stayed silent.
“I gave up everything to become part of that family.”
“You destroyed someone else’s family.”
Juliana looked at him.
“I know.”
For a moment, she looked tired.
Not evil.
Just broken.
“But I don’t know how to lose.”
Adrian looked away.
“That’s your problem.”
The next day, Ricardo made another announcement.
Not about business.
Not about the scandal.
About his children.
“I spent years believing I had no family.”
He spoke in front of cameras.
“I was wrong.”
He looked directly ahead.
“My children existed. They were loved. They were raised by a woman who never stopped protecting them.”
The reporters listened.
“Beatriz gave them everything I failed to give.”
A pause.
“I cannot erase the past.”
His voice became emotional.
“But I can stop running from it.”
That night, Mateo approached Ricardo.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Are you angry at Mom?”
Ricardo looked surprised.
“No.”
“Even though she didn’t tell you?”
Ricardo thought carefully.
“No.”
“Why?”
Ricardo smiled sadly.
“Because now I understand what it feels like to be afraid.”
Mateo nodded.
For the first time, he saw something different in his father.
Not a businessman.
Not a famous person.
A human being.
But just as Ricardo began rebuilding his family, Juliana made one final decision.
She contacted the media.
And she released a statement.
A statement that would change everything.
Because inside it was a claim that shocked everyone.
