CHAPTER 9 — THE TEST THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

The words followed me long after Rachel said them.

“We need a DNA test.”

A simple sentence.

A sentence that should have been nothing more than a medical procedure.

But it felt like someone had opened the ground beneath my feet.

Because this was not about proving something to strangers.

This was about my family.

My daughter.

My marriage.

The life I thought I understood.

I looked down at Lily.

She was sleeping peacefully against my chest.

Her tiny fingers were wrapped around mine.

She trusted me completely.

She didn’t know about affairs.

Lies.

Hidden records.

Or the possibility that the adults around her had been fighting over her before she could even say her first word.

And that hurt more than anything.

Daniel stood a few feet away.

Silent.

Broken.

For once, he had nothing to say.

No excuse.

No explanation.

No carefully prepared story.

Only fear.

“Jennifer.”

I didn’t look at him.

“What?”

His voice was softer than I had heard in months.

“I need you to know something.”

I waited.

“I never questioned that Lily was mine.”

I slowly looked up.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you hide the records?”

His expression changed.

Because he knew that was the question he could never escape.

“I was scared.”

I nodded.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You were scared of losing your perfect life.”

Daniel looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because deep down, he knew.

I looked at Rachel.

“When can we do the test?”

She answered immediately.

“Tomorrow morning.”

Daniel reacted.

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Can’t we wait?”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“I just think we need time.”

“For what?”

He had no answer.

Rachel noticed.

“Mr. Carter, waiting does not change the result.”

Daniel looked away.

That was the first moment I saw it.

A small movement.

A hesitation.

But it was there.

Fear.

Not the fear of losing me.

Something else.

I studied his face.

“Daniel.”

He looked back.

“What?”

“Is there something you haven’t told me?”

His eyes moved away.

Too quickly.

That was enough.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Answer me.”

“No.”

The answer came too fast.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Mr. Carter.”

Daniel sighed.

“I don’t know.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

He ran his hand through his hair.

“I mean…”

He struggled.

“There was something Chloe told me.”

My chest tightened.

“Of course.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Jennifer, listen.”

“What did she tell you?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She said there was a possibility that Lily wasn’t yours.”

The hallway went completely silent.

Even though I expected something terrible.

Even though I knew secrets were still hiding.

Hearing those words still felt like a physical blow.

I stared at him.

“And you believed her?”

“No.”

“You went to her.”

“I was confused.”

“You believed her enough to investigate.”

Daniel said nothing.

That was the answer.

I looked away.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

The distance.

The secrecy.

The hospital records.

The hidden conversations.

Daniel had not only cheated.

He had allowed another woman to put doubt between him and his own daughter.

Rachel spoke carefully.

“Jennifer, we need to understand something.”

I looked at her.

“Chloe had a motive.”

“What motive?”

Rachel glanced at Daniel.

“She wanted Mr. Carter emotionally dependent on her.”

Daniel looked angry.

“She wouldn’t do that.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You said that before.”

The words silenced him.

Because they were true.

He had defended Chloe every time.

Until the evidence became impossible to ignore.

I looked at Daniel.

“How long did you know about this?”

He swallowed.

“Before Lily was born.”

My heart sank.

“You knew before I gave birth?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe everything was normal?”

“I wanted to protect you.”

The anger inside me finally broke through.

“No.”

My voice echoed down the hallway.

“You wanted to protect yourself.”

Daniel flinched.

“You didn’t want to see me hurt.”

“You didn’t want to admit you had made the biggest mistake of your life.”

“You didn’t want to choose between your wife and the woman you were emotionally attached to.”

Daniel looked down.

Because every word was true.

Then something unexpected happened.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And froze.

I noticed immediately.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

Rachel looked at him.

“Show us.”

Slowly, Daniel turned the phone around.

The name appeared.

CHLOE.

Again.

But this time, something was different.

There was a message preview.

A message that changed the entire situation.

“Daniel, you need to come alone. She knows too much.”

My blood ran cold.

“She?”

Daniel stared at the phone.

He whispered:

“She knows?”

Rachel immediately asked:

“Who is she talking about?”

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

Chloe was not afraid of me.

She was afraid of someone else.

Someone behind everything.

Daniel looked terrified.

“Jennifer…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“I think Chloe was hiding something from me too.”

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because I trusted him.

That was gone.

But because fear recognized fear.

And Daniel looked exactly like someone who had finally discovered he was never the person in control.

Rachel took a breath.

“We need to find Chloe.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“No?”

His face became serious.

“If Chloe is involved in changing hospital records…”

He looked at Lily.

“If she did something to hurt my daughter…”

He stopped.

Because he couldn’t finish the sentence.

For the first time, his anger was not about himself.

It was about Lily.

I watched him carefully.

A small part of me wanted to believe that the father inside him was finally waking up.

But another part reminded me.

A father who arrives after the damage is done still has consequences to face.

Then my phone received another message.

Not from Chloe.

From the unknown number.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

“Jennifer, before you take the DNA test, you need to know who was in the delivery room that night.”

My heart stopped.

Because only a few people knew.

The doctors.

The nurses.

Daniel.

And me.

I looked at the message again.

Then at Daniel.

“Who else was there?”

His face changed.

And I knew.

There was another person.

Another witness.

Another secret.

Daniel whispered:

“Jennifer…”

“What?”

His voice was almost gone.

“Chloe wasn’t the only person who came to the hospital that night.”

The hallway lights seemed suddenly too bright.

“Who else was there?”

Daniel looked at me.

May you like

And finally said the name I never expected.

“Your mother.”
