CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET DANIEL BURIED

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
The video was still frozen on my phone screen.
A hospital hallway.
A date I would never forget.
The night Lily was born.
The night I believed Daniel was beside me because he loved me.
But now I knew the truth.
He had been somewhere else.
With someone else.
Making decisions about my life without me.
I looked at him.
“Tell me.”
My voice was barely above a whisper.
But everyone heard it.
“Tell me what you hid.”
Daniel stood completely still.
The confident husband from the baptism photos was gone.
The man who always had the perfect explanation.
The man who could convince anyone he was the reasonable one.
He was gone.
All that remained was someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Jennifer…”
I raised my hand.
“No.”
He stopped.
“I don’t want another excuse.”
His eyes filled with panic.
“I need you to understand.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I spent months trying to understand you.”
“I tried to understand why you were distant.”
“I tried to understand why you were always protecting your phone.”
“I tried to understand why the man who promised to stand beside me disappeared when I needed him most.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“I’m done trying to understand.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Then at his mother.
Almost like he was searching for someone to save him.
Nobody moved.
Nobody defended him.
Because everyone had finally seen what I had seen for months.
The truth.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“The night Lily was born…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Chloe called me because she was having a problem.”
I closed my eyes for a second.
Even now.
Even here.
He started with Chloe.
“She said she needed help.”
“And you left me.”
“I came back.”
“You left me.”
My voice became sharper.
“Stop trying to make it sound smaller.”
Daniel looked down.
“You’re right.”
The words surprised me.
Because Daniel rarely admitted anything.
But it was too late.
“I left you.”
The hallway became silent.
His mother looked away.
Ashamed.
“Why?”
I asked.
Not angrily.
Not loudly.
Just one question.
“Why was she more important?”
Daniel shook his head.
“She wasn’t.”
“Then why?”
He didn’t answer.
And that silence hurt more than any confession.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, there is another question.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“Who gave you the folder?”
His expression changed.
“What folder?”
“The folder Chloe handed you in the video.”
Daniel froze.
I noticed.
Rachel noticed.
Everyone noticed.
“You know exactly what folder I mean.”
Daniel swallowed.
“It was nothing.”
I stared at him.
“Nothing?”
He looked at me.
“Jennifer…”
“No.”
I pointed at the phone.
“That woman walked into the hospital while I was giving birth.”
“She gave you documents.”
“You opened them.”
“You told her I would never find out.”
My voice cracked.
“So tell me.”
“What was inside?”
Daniel looked away.
That was the answer.
Whatever was inside that folder mattered.
A lot.
His mother stepped closer.
“Daniel.”
Her voice was quiet.
“What did you do?”
He finally spoke.
“I found out something before Lily was born.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Daniel looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw genuine pain.
“I got a phone call.”
“From who?”
“From the hospital.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
He hesitated.
“They told me there was a mistake in the records.”
My breathing became shallow.
A strange feeling moved through me.
“What mistake?”
Daniel looked down.
“The pregnancy records.”
The hallway felt like it tilted.
Rachel immediately became alert.
“What are you saying?”
Daniel rubbed his hands nervously.
“I’m saying…”
He swallowed.
“That before Lily was born, there was a question about the information in the hospital system.”
I stared at him.
“A question about what?”
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel.”
His eyes finally met mine.
“There was a possibility…”
He stopped.
“Say it.”
His voice became quieter.
“That Lily’s records had been mixed with another patient’s information.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
I didn’t understand.
Or maybe I didn’t want to.
“What are you saying?”
Daniel looked devastated.
“I was told there was a possibility that something was wrong.”
My face went cold.
“And you kept that from me?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
I almost laughed.
Protect me.
That word.
The same word he used when he was protecting Chloe.
The same word men used when they wanted to justify taking away someone’s right to know.
“You were trying to protect me?”
“Yes.”
“By lying?”
He looked away.
“I didn’t know what to do.”
“You knew exactly what to do.”
I stared at him.
“You should have come to me.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I was scared.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You were selfish.”
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
He wasn’t protecting me.
He was protecting himself.
From fear.
From responsibility.
From the possibility that his perfect life could fall apart.
Rachel looked at the documents again.
“Then why was Chloe involved?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
And suddenly, that question became the most important one.
Because even if Daniel had received disturbing information…
Why was Chloe standing beside him?
Why was she holding documents?
Why was she telling him I would never know?
I looked at Daniel.
“You didn’t just hide something from me.”
His silence confirmed it.
“You worked with her.”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
I noticed.
Rachel noticed.
Daniel realized his mistake.
I walked closer.
“What did Chloe know?”
Nothing.
The silence lasted too long.
Then Daniel whispered:
“She knew before you did.”
My entire body froze.
“What?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I told her.”
My heart dropped.
“You told her?”
“I needed someone to talk to.”
I stared at him.
“You told another woman about our daughter before you told your own wife?”
Daniel had no answer.
Because there was no defense.
I looked at the man I had loved.
The man I built a home with.
The man who held my hand and promised me forever.
And I finally understood something.
The affair was not the beginning of the betrayal.
It was only the part I discovered first.
The real betrayal had started earlier.
The night Lily was born.
The night Daniel made a decision.
A decision that changed everything.
Then my phone vibrated again.
Another message.
Unknown number.
This time, only one sentence appeared.
“Ask Daniel why Chloe had access to your daughter’s birth records before you did.”
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked up.
Daniel’s face changed.
Because he knew.
The message was true.
And suddenly, the question was no longer about the affair.
May you like
It was about my daughter.
And why another woman had been allowed inside the most important moment of my life.
