CHAPTER 18 — CHLOE’S FINAL CONFESSION

The private clinic was quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that made every footstep feel heavier.

I walked through the hallway holding Lily.

Rachel walked beside me.

Daniel followed behind us.

Not beside me.

Not yet.

There were still too many broken pieces between us.

But he was there.

And for the first time, he was not walking ahead of me.

He was following my lead.

The receptionist looked nervous when she saw us.

“Are you here for Chloe Bennett?”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

The woman glanced at the computer.

Then back at us.

“She asked not to see anyone.”

I looked at her.

“Tell her Jennifer Carter is here.”

The receptionist hesitated.

Then her expression changed.

Because she knew the name.

A few seconds later, she picked up the phone.

Whispered something.

Then looked back.

“She said she will see you.”

The door opened.

And there she was.

Chloe.

The woman who had been at the center of everything.

But she did not look like the confident woman from Daniel’s messages.

She looked exhausted.

Pale.

Afraid.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Chloe looked at Lily.

Her expression softened.

“She’s beautiful.”

I felt anger rise immediately.

“You don’t get to say that.”

Her eyes dropped.

“I know.”

Good.

At least she knew.

Rachel closed the door behind us.

“We have questions.”

Chloe nodded.

“I expected that.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?”

His voice was different.

Not the voice of a man protecting her.

The voice of a man who finally wanted answers.

“Why did you lie to me?”

Chloe looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.”

I almost laughed.

Another person using fear.

But Chloe continued.

“Not the way Daniel was afraid.”

She looked at me.

“I was afraid because Mark controlled everything.”

Rachel immediately asked:

“When did you meet Mark?”

Chloe sat down.

“Before I met Daniel again.”

The room became quiet.

“Explain.”

She took a deep breath.

“I was struggling after my divorce.”

“I had debt.”

“I was pregnant.”

“And Mark approached me.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did he want?”

Chloe looked at him.

“You.”

The answer was simple.

Direct.

“He told me you were vulnerable.”

My jaw tightened.

“He told me your marriage was already falling apart.”

Daniel looked away.

Because that part hurt.

Not because it was true.

Because he knew he had allowed it to become true.

Chloe continued.

“He said all I needed to do was make you believe I needed you.”

“And you did.”

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“Yes.”

Silence.

“I hated myself for it.”

I stared at her.

“You still did it.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No defense.

Just honesty.

For the first time.

“Why the DNA report?”

Chloe looked down.

“That wasn’t my idea.”

“Mark?”

She nodded.

“He created the plan.”

Rachel asked:

“How?”

Chloe explained.

“He knew Daniel had doubts.”

“He knew Daniel was stressed.”

“He knew Daniel wanted to believe he was a good person.”

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“He told me if Daniel believed Jennifer was hiding something from him, he would emotionally separate from her.”

I looked at Daniel.

“And you did.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Chloe continued.

“Mark never wanted Daniel to leave Jennifer for me.”

That surprised everyone.

“What?”

She shook her head.

“He never cared about me.”

“Then why?”

“Because he needed Daniel alone.”

Rachel understood.

“An isolated person is easier to control.”

Chloe nodded.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

The entire plan was finally clear.

Mark didn’t want Daniel and Chloe together.

He wanted Daniel broken.

Distracted.

Desperate.

I looked at Chloe.

“What about Lily?”

Her face changed.

“I swear…”

She stopped.

Then looked at me.

“I never wanted anything to happen to her.”

“But you changed her records.”

Chloe looked down.

“Yes.”

My anger returned.

“Why?”

“Because Mark told me to.”

“That is not an answer.”

She cried.

“Because I was scared.”

I stared at her.

“You keep saying that.”

“I know.”

She wiped her tears.

“But it’s the truth.”

She looked at Lily.

“I never touched her.”

I believed one thing.

She was telling the truth about that.

But it did not erase what she had done.

Rachel asked:

“Why request another DNA test?”

Chloe looked at Daniel.

“Because I wanted to expose Mark.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

She nodded.

“After the baptism party, I realized what he was going to do.”

“What?”

“Take everything from you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“So you changed sides?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“I stopped choosing sides.”

A strange silence followed.

Because that was the first mature thing anyone had said.

She continued:

“I knew Mark had kept copies of everything.”

“The fake reports.”

“The contracts.”

“The payments.”

“Everything.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“Where are they?”

Chloe hesitated.

Then reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small storage device.

“I copied them.”

Daniel stared.

“When?”

“Before I left.”

Rachel took it.

“We need to check this.”

Chloe nodded.

But before anyone could move…

The clinic lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the hallway alarm sounded.

Rachel immediately stood.

“What happened?”

The receptionist’s voice came through the speaker.

“Everyone needs to leave immediately.”

The lights went out.

Darkness filled the room.

My heart started racing.

Daniel moved instantly toward me and Lily.

Not thinking.

Not hesitating.

Protecting.

A second later, the emergency lights turned on.

Rachel looked out the window.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She pointed outside.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

The same vehicle from the hotel security footage.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mark.”

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

He had found us.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A message appeared.

“You wanted the truth, Jennifer.”

Another message followed.

“Now you will see what happens to people who refuse to stay silent.”

My blood ran cold.

Then a final message appeared.

“Look outside.”

I slowly turned toward the window.

The black SUV door opened.

A man stepped out.

And even from a distance…

I knew exactly who it was.

Mark Ellis.

May you like

He was not running anymore.

He was coming for us.
