CHAPTER 2 — THE CALL THAT EXPOSED EVERYTHING

Daniel stared at the phone.
The screen continued glowing between us.
CHLOE.
Her name sat there like a confession nobody needed to explain.
The room that had been filled with laughter minutes earlier now felt like a courtroom.
Everyone was watching him.
Waiting.
His father.
His mother.
Our relatives.
His coworkers.
And me.
Daniel slowly reached for the phone.
For a second, I thought he would answer.
I almost wanted him to.
Because I knew Chloe had no idea what was happening.
She had no idea that the man who promised her everything was standing in a room full of people with his entire secret falling apart.
But Daniel stopped.
His hand hovered above the screen.
Then he rejected the call.
A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.
His mother looked at him with disappointment.
“Why didn’t you answer?”
Daniel forced a small smile.
“It’s not important.”
I looked at him.
Not important.
That was always his favorite phrase.
The affair was not important.
The money was not important.
The lies were not important.
But everything became important when people finally discovered the truth.
I picked up another document from the folder.
“This is the reason he didn’t answer.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Jennifer, stop.”
I ignored him.
I placed the document on the table.
It was a printed copy of a message.
A message Chloe had sent him three weeks before Lily’s baptism.
Everyone leaned closer.
His mother read the first line.
Then her face changed.
“What is this?”
Nobody answered.
Because the message was clear.
Chloe had written:
“I don’t understand why you’re still pretending with Jennifer. You promised me after the baby is born, things will change.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Daniel’s father slowly looked at his son.
“After the baby is born?”
His voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel immediately stood.
“Dad, listen to me.”
“No.”
His father raised his hand.
For the first time all afternoon, Daniel’s father looked ashamed.
“Let her finish.”
Daniel froze.
Because the room no longer belonged to him.
I turned another page.
“I spent months trying to understand what was happening.”
My voice remained calm.
“I wondered if I was imagining things.”
“I wondered if pregnancy hormones were making me suspicious.”
“I wondered if maybe I was the problem.”
Daniel looked away.
Because he knew.
He knew exactly how many times he made me question myself.
How many nights I sat beside him while he answered Chloe’s messages in secret.
How many times he told me he was too tired to talk while spending hours comforting another woman.
“I gave you chances to tell me the truth.”
I looked at him.
“You never did.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s not fair.”
A bitter smile touched my lips.
“Fair?”
I repeated the word.
“You want to talk about fair?”
The room became even quieter.
“Was it fair when you told me we couldn’t afford extra help after Lily was born?”
Daniel said nothing.
“Was it fair when you told me we needed to cut expenses while you were paying another woman’s bills?”
Nothing.
“Was it fair when you used money from our savings account for her?”
His silence became the answer.
His mother looked at him.
“You used family money?”
Daniel finally reacted.
“It wasn’t like that.”
I looked at him.
“Then explain it.”
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
But there was no perfect explanation.
Because every excuse had already died.
His mother looked devastated.
“I don’t understand.”
Her voice shook.
“You were going to stand here today and celebrate your family?”
Daniel looked at the floor.
I watched the realization hit her.
This baptism was not about Lily.
It was about Daniel.
The decorations.
The guests.
The expensive hotel.
The speeches.
Everything was designed to create a picture.
A picture where Daniel was the perfect husband.
A picture where nobody questioned what happened behind closed doors.
But now everyone saw the truth.
The perfect family never existed.
At least not the way they believed.
Then Daniel did something I expected.
He changed tactics.
He stopped defending himself.
And started attacking me.
“You’re doing this because you’re angry.”
Everyone looked at him.
His voice became softer.
More controlled.
“You’re hurt, Jennifer. I understand that.”
I almost laughed.
Because even now, he was trying to sound like the victim.
“But humiliating me in front of everyone?”
He looked around the room.
“You planned this.”
There it was.
The shift.
The moment he tried to make me the villain.
I closed the folder.
Slowly.
“No, Daniel.”
I stared at him.
“You planned this.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“This entire performance.”
I pointed around the room.
“You planned the party.”
“You invited everyone.”
“You spent money we needed.”
“You wanted everyone to see a perfect husband.”
My voice became colder.
“And now you’re angry because they finally saw the real one.”
Nobody spoke.
Daniel’s face tightened.
For years, he had relied on one thing.
My kindness.
My patience.
My willingness to forgive.
He thought those qualities made me weak.
He never understood they were choices.
And now I was choosing differently.
Then suddenly, Lily began crying.
The sound cut through the tension.
My mother immediately picked her up.
“She’s hungry.”
The entire room looked toward the baby.
And for a moment, everything became painfully clear.
Lily was innocent.
She had done nothing wrong.
She was born into a situation created by adults who failed her.
I walked over and gently touched her tiny hand.
“I’m sorry, baby.”
Daniel watched me.
And for the first time, I saw something different in his eyes.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Regret.
But it came too late.
A few minutes later, Daniel’s phone rang again.
This time, everyone looked.
Nobody needed to ask who it was.
Chloe.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then his father spoke.
“Put it on speaker.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?”
“If there is nothing to hide, answer.”
The room waited.
Daniel’s hand shook slightly.
Then he pressed the button.
“Hello?”
Chloe’s voice immediately filled the ballroom.
“Daniel, why aren’t you answering me?”
Everyone heard her.
Daniel looked around.
His face became pale.
“Chloe, I can’t talk right now.”
A pause.
Then Chloe said something that changed everything.
“Why not?”
Her voice became confused.
“You told me today was the day you were finally going to tell Jennifer.”
My heart stopped.
The room froze.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
That sentence had just destroyed him.
His mother whispered:
“Tell Jennifer what?”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
And Chloe continued.
“You said after the baptism, you were leaving her.”
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Daniel looked at me.
I looked back at him.
And suddenly, the betrayal became even bigger than I thought.
This was never just an affair.
He wasn’t planning to fix his mistake.
He wasn’t planning to confess.
He was planning to abandon me.
After using me.
After using my money.
After using our daughter as part of his perfect image.
I slowly stood.
The chair moved against the floor.
Everyone looked at me.
Daniel whispered my name.
“Jennifer…”
But I was no longer listening.
Because the man I married had just revealed the truth himself.
And now I finally knew the one thing I had been waiting to discover.
Daniel was not sorry.
He was only sorry he got caught.
I picked up the folder.
Closed it.
And walked away from the table.
Behind me, Daniel’s voice broke through the room.
“Jennifer, wait.”
I stopped.
But I did not turn around.
Because the next words I said would change the rest of our lives.
“I’m not leaving because you cheated.”
The ballroom became silent.
“I’m leaving because you planned my replacement while I was carrying your child.”
Then I walked out.
Leaving Daniel standing in the middle of the baptism party he created.
Alone.
May you like
Humiliated.
And finally exposed.
