CHAPTER 5 — THE NIGHT LILY WAS BORN

The question stayed between us.
“What happened the night Lily was born?”
I had expected anger.
A denial.
An argument.
Anything.
But Daniel’s reaction was worse.
Fear.
Not the fear of being caught cheating.
Not the fear of losing his marriage.
Something deeper.
Something that told me the night my daughter entered the world had been hiding a secret from me.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Then at his mother.
Then back at me.
“Not here.”
I almost laughed.
Not here.
That was always how Daniel handled the truth.
Not now.
Not here.
Not in front of people.
Not when it was inconvenient.
He didn’t protect my feelings.
He protected himself.
I stepped closer.
“No.”
His eyes lifted.
“What?”
“You don’t get to choose when the truth comes out anymore.”
The words hit him.
Because for the first time, he understood.
The version of me who waited quietly at home was gone.
The woman who believed every explanation.
The woman who apologized even when she was hurt.
The woman who protected his reputation.
She no longer existed.
“Tell me what happened.”
Daniel looked down.
“I made mistakes that night.”
My chest tightened.
“Mistakes?”
He closed his eyes.
“Jennifer…”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Do not call it a mistake.”
My voice became quieter.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
The hallway remained silent.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“After you went into labor, I wasn’t there the entire time.”
The words landed harder than I expected.
Because that was not what I remembered.
I remembered Daniel holding my hand.
I remembered him crying when Lily was born.
I remembered him telling everyone he had never been happier.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“But not the whole time.”
I stared at him.
“Where were you?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation destroyed something inside me.
“Daniel.”
He looked away.
“I went to see Chloe.”
The hallway disappeared.
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the hotel staff walking nearby.
Not the music from the ballroom.
Not even my own breathing.
“You went to see her?”
Daniel quickly stepped forward.
“Jennifer, listen.”
“No.”
My voice trembled.
“You left me in the hospital.”
“I came back.”
“You left me while I was giving birth to your child.”
“I was confused.”
“Confused?”
I looked at him.
“I was in labor.”
My eyes burned.
“I was terrified.”
“I was alone.”
“And you went to her?”
Daniel’s face fell.
“I thought she needed me.”
That sentence broke something in me.
Because it confirmed what I already knew.
He had always believed Chloe’s pain mattered more than mine.
Even when I was the one carrying his child.
Even when I was the one fighting through childbirth.
I turned away.
Because I refused to let him see how deeply those words hurt.
Rachel stepped closer.
“Jennifer.”
I shook my head.
“I’m fine.”
But I wasn’t.
Not completely.
Because betrayal was not only about what someone did.
It was about realizing how little they valued the moments you thought mattered.
The birth of Lily was supposed to belong to us.
A memory of love.
A memory of family.
Instead, Daniel had placed another woman in the middle of it.
His mother looked horrified.
“You left Jennifer during labor?”
Daniel immediately defended himself.
“It wasn’t like that.”
His mother stared at him.
“Then what was it like?”
Daniel had no answer.
I looked back at him.
“What did Chloe need?”
He hesitated.
And I knew there was more.
“What?”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“She called me.”
“Why?”
“She said she was scared.”
“Of what?”
He remained silent.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Daniel.”
“She said she had complications.”
My eyes narrowed.
“And you believed her.”
“Yes.”
“Without question.”
“Yes.”
“But you questioned me.”
He looked confused.
“What?”
“When I told you I was exhausted.”
“When I told you I was scared.”
“When I asked you to stay home more.”
“You told me I was being emotional.”
Daniel looked down.
Because he remembered.
Every time he chose her.
Every time he dismissed me.
Every time he made me feel like I was asking for too much.
Then Rachel interrupted.
“Jennifer.”
She held up another document.
“I found something else.”
Daniel looked immediately alarmed.
“What?”
Rachel ignored him.
She handed the paper to me.
“This was from the hospital security records.”
I looked at it.
My eyebrows lowered.
Security footage request.
Date.
The night Lily was born.
“Why would you need this?”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“Because someone accessed your wife’s hospital room records that night.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Rachel’s expression became serious.
“Someone attempted to remove information from the hospital system.”
The hallway went cold.
“Information about what?”
Rachel looked at me.
“We don’t know yet.”
Then she looked at Daniel.
“But the access request came from a device registered under your name.”
Silence.
I turned slowly toward Daniel.
His face had lost all color.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Rachel remained calm.
“Then you should have no problem explaining it.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Jennifer, I didn’t do that.”
I wanted to believe him.
A part of me hated that I still wanted to.
Because love does not disappear instantly.
Even after betrayal.
But trust does.
And mine was gone.
Then my phone received another message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
This time, there was a video attached.
A hospital hallway.
The night Lily was born.
The timestamp matched.
My hands started shaking.
I pressed play.
The screen showed Daniel walking through the hospital.
But he wasn’t alone.
Chloe was beside him.
And she was holding a folder.
They stopped outside a private room.
My room.
Then Chloe looked at Daniel and said something.
The audio was unclear.
I turned up the volume.
Static.
A few seconds passed.
Then her voice became clear.
“You promised me she would never know.”
My blood went cold.
Daniel immediately reached for my phone.
“Don’t watch this.”
I pulled it away.
“What did she mean?”
He didn’t answer.
The video continued.
Chloe handed him the folder.
Daniel opened it.
Looked inside.
Then he said something that made my entire world stop.
The audio became clearer.
And I heard my husband’s voice.
“I’ll make sure Jennifer never finds out.”
The video ended.
I stood there completely frozen.
Because whatever happened that night…
Was not just about Chloe.
It was about me.
About Lily.
About a secret Daniel had decided I was never allowed to know.
I slowly looked up.
“Daniel.”
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
“What did you hide from me?”
For the first time…
He had no excuse.
No explanation.
No words.
May you like
Only fear.
And I knew the truth was much worse than I imagined.
