CHAPTER 3 — THE WOMAN HE PLANNED TO REPLACE ME WITH

The hotel hallway felt colder than it should have.

Maybe it was because I had spent the last four months carrying a secret that was heavier than my pregnancy.

Maybe it was because I had finally said everything I had been afraid to say.

Or maybe it was because, after years of loving Daniel, I was finally seeing him clearly.

Behind me, I could still hear the chaos inside the ballroom.

Whispers.

Questions.

Accusations.

The perfect baptism party had become the biggest humiliation of Daniel’s life.

But I kept walking.

I refused to turn around.

Because I knew Daniel.

If I stopped.

If I looked back.

If I allowed him even one moment to explain.

He would try to pull me back into the same cycle.

Apology.

Excuse.

Promise.

Forgiveness.

Then another betrayal.

I had lived that pattern once.

I would not live it again.

“Jennifer.”

His voice echoed through the hallway.

I stopped.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed to hear what he would say.

Daniel appeared behind me.

His expensive suit was still perfect.

His hair was still carefully styled.

But his confidence was gone.

For the first time, he looked like a man who had lost control of his own story.

“Please.”

I slowly turned.

“What?”

His eyes were red.

Not from tears.

From panic.

“Can we talk privately?”

I looked at him.

“About what?”

He swallowed.

“About us.”

I almost smiled.

“Us?”

“Yes.”

He stepped closer.

“Jennifer, I made mistakes.”

There it was.

The word again.

Mistakes.

I crossed my arms.

“No, Daniel.”

His expression changed.

“You didn’t make one mistake.”

My voice remained calm.

“You made hundreds of decisions.”

He looked away.

“Please don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Destroy everything.”

I stared at him.

“Daniel, you already destroyed everything.”

He shook his head.

“No. We can fix this.”

The confidence returned slightly.

That old Daniel.

The one who believed every problem had a solution if he said the right words.

“You don’t understand.”

He lowered his voice.

“Chloe was going through a difficult time.”

I felt something inside me go cold.

Even now.

Even after everyone heard the truth.

He was still protecting her.

Not me.

Not Lily.

Her.

“She needed someone.”

I nodded slowly.

“And I didn’t?”

Daniel became silent.

“I was six months pregnant.”

My voice cracked slightly.

Not because I was weak.

Because I remembered.

“I was scared.”

“I was exhausted.”

“I was carrying your child.”

I looked directly at him.

“And while I was preparing a nursery, you were preparing another family.”

His face tightened.

“That’s not what happened.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Silence.

Because the truth was simple.

There was no version where he looked innocent.

Before he could answer, the ballroom doors opened.

His mother walked out.

She looked different.

Older.

Broken.

The woman who had spent the entire afternoon proudly showing off her son was now looking at him like she didn’t recognize him.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

“Mom.”

She held the phone in her hand.

The speaker conversation with Chloe had clearly ended.

But the damage remained.

“Is it true?”

Daniel looked down.

“Mom…”

“Is it true that you were planning to leave Jennifer?”

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

His mother closed her eyes.

“I raised you better than this.”

Daniel immediately became defensive.

“I made a mistake.”

His mother looked at him.

And this time, even she didn’t accept the excuse.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“But you made a choice.”

Those words hit him harder than anything I had said.

Because they came from the person who loved him most.

She looked at me.

“Jennifer…”

I waited.

“I am so sorry.”

I nodded.

But I didn’t say anything.

Because an apology from his family could not repair what Daniel destroyed.

His mother looked back at him.

“Does Chloe know about Lily?”

Daniel froze.

A strange silence followed.

I noticed it immediately.

Something was wrong.

“What do you mean?”

His mother looked confused.

“Daniel?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“It’s complicated.”

My stomach tightened.

“Complicated?”

He looked at me.

“Jennifer…”

I stepped back.

“No.”

A terrible feeling moved through me.

“What did you do?”

Daniel looked away.

And that was when I understood.

The affair was not the only secret.

There was something else.

Something bigger.

“Tell me.”

He remained silent.

His mother looked between us.

“Daniel, what is she talking about?”

Finally, he whispered:

“Chloe doesn’t know everything.”

My heart started beating faster.

“What does that mean?”

He looked at me.

Then away.

And the answer came slowly.

“She thinks…”

He stopped.

“Say it.”

“She thinks I’m leaving you because Lily isn’t mine.”

The hallway went completely still.

I stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel immediately raised his hands.

“No, no. That’s not what I mean.”

But the damage was already done.

My mind raced.

“What did you tell her?”

“Nothing.”

“You just said she thinks Lily isn’t yours.”

He looked terrified.

Because he knew he had revealed something he never intended to say.

“I never told her that directly.”

“Then how did she believe it?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that silence told me everything.

There was another layer.

Another lie.

Another manipulation.

I stepped closer.

“Daniel.”

My voice became colder.

“What have you been telling her about me?”

He looked away.

“Nothing important.”

I laughed quietly.

Nothing important.

The phrase of a man who had built an entire second life.

Then my phone vibrated.

I looked down.

A message.

Unknown number.

At first, I ignored it.

Then I opened it.

And my entire body froze.

There was a picture attached.

A picture of Chloe.

Standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

Underneath was one sentence:

“Jennifer, you need to know the truth about the baby Daniel thinks is his.”

I stared at the screen.

My hands went cold.

Because suddenly, the story I thought I understood was changing.

Daniel had betrayed me.

That was certain.

But now there was another question.

One I never expected.

Was Daniel hiding a child from me?

Or was someone hiding the truth from Daniel?

I slowly looked up.

Daniel was watching my face.

And I knew.

May you like

Whatever came next…

Was going to destroy every person in that hallway.
