CHAPTER 13 — THE PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE PAST

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

“My father?”

The word barely left my mouth.

Because my father had been gone from my life for years.

Not dead.

Not missing.

Just gone.

A person who existed in old photographs and childhood memories.

A man who disappeared after my parents’ divorce and slowly became a stranger.

The last thing I expected was his name appearing in the middle of the biggest betrayal of my life.

I looked back down at the photograph.

My hands trembled.

The image was old.

Slightly faded.

But clear enough.

A hospital hallway.

The night Lily was born.

A nurse walking past.

A doctor holding a chart.

Daniel standing near the door.

And in the corner…

A man watching.

My father.

“Why would he take this picture?”

My mother looked away.

“I don’t know.”

I stared at her.

“You know more than you’re saying.”

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“Jennifer…”

“No.”

My voice became firmer.

“I’m done with half-truths.”

Everyone became silent.

Because that was the pattern of my entire life with these people.

Everyone thought they were protecting me.

Everyone thought they were making decisions for my own good.

But every secret they kept created a bigger disaster.

Rachel carefully took the photograph.

“Do you know when your father gave this to you?”

My mother shook her head.

“No.”

“When?”

“Three weeks after Lily was born.”

My heart tightened.

“Three weeks?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

My mother looked down.

“Because I didn’t understand what it meant.”

I stared at her.

“You had a picture of my father outside my hospital room and you said nothing?”

She closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.”

I almost laughed.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone except me.

I was the only person who had been forced to live inside the consequences.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Jennifer…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“I think we need to find your father.”

I studied him.

The irony almost hurt.

For months, Daniel had hidden information from me.

Now he was telling me we needed answers.

But this time, I agreed.

Because whatever happened that night was bigger than Daniel.

Bigger than Chloe.

Someone had been moving pieces around my life.

And I needed to know why.

Two hours later, Rachel found him.

Not easily.

My father had changed his phone number several times.

Moved between cities.

Avoided old connections.

Almost like he had spent years trying to disappear.

His name was David Carter.

The same last name as Daniel.

But no relation.

Just a coincidence.

Or maybe not.

I stared at the address Rachel found.

A small house outside the city.

“He lives alone?”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Does he know about Lily?”

“Yes.”

My heart stopped.

“How?”

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Your mother told him.”

I turned toward my mother.

“You told him?”

She looked ashamed.

“I thought he had a right to know.”

I looked away.

Because somehow everyone had rights.

Everyone except me.

The next morning, we drove to the address.

Daniel came with us.

I almost told him not to.

But something stopped me.

Because despite everything he had done…

He was still Lily’s father.

Or at least, he believed he was.

And if someone had tried to destroy that relationship…

He deserved answers too.

The house was small.

Quiet.

Old.

Nothing like the comfortable life my father once had.

Rachel knocked.

A few seconds passed.

Then the door opened.

An older man stood there.

His face changed the moment he saw me.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Jennifer.”

My entire body went still.

Because he said my name like he had been waiting years to say it.

“Dad.”

The word felt strange.

Almost foreign.

He looked at Lily in my arms.

His eyes filled with emotion.

“She’s beautiful.”

I didn’t respond.

Because there were too many questions.

Too much anger.

Too much history.

“Why were you at the hospital?”

His expression changed.

He knew exactly what I meant.

“I was afraid this day would come.”

“What day?”

“The day you found out.”

I stepped closer.

“Found out what?”

My father looked at Daniel.

Then Rachel.

Then back at me.

“Come inside.”

“No.”

My voice was firm.

“I’ve spent my whole life waiting for people to tell me the truth.”

“I’m not waiting anymore.”

My father looked hurt.

But he nodded.

“You’re right.”

He took a deep breath.

“I was at the hospital because I knew something was wrong.”

Daniel immediately reacted.

“What did you know?”

My father looked at him.

“You were being manipulated.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

My father continued.

“Someone wanted you to believe Lily wasn’t yours.”

The words echoed.

Again.

Another person saying the same thing.

But now I needed to know why.

“Who?”

My father looked at me.

“I don’t know who started it.”

“But I know who helped.”

Everyone became still.

“Who?”

My father’s eyes moved toward Daniel.

And for a moment, I thought he was going to accuse him.

But instead, he said:

“Someone inside Daniel’s company.”

Daniel frowned.

“My company?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

My father looked away.

“Mark Ellis.”

The name returned.

Daniel’s former business partner.

The man who disappeared after Lily was born.

Rachel immediately took notes.

“How do you know him?”

My father remained silent.

That silence scared me.

“Dad.”

Finally, he whispered:

“Because Mark came to me before Lily was born.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

“He wanted information about you.”

“Why?”

My father looked at me.

“Because he believed your marriage was the only thing standing between him and Daniel’s company.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

My father looked at him.

“You trusted the wrong person.”

The words hit Daniel.

Because they were familiar.

Too familiar.

My father continued:

“Mark knew you were distracted.”

“He knew Chloe was creating problems.”

“He knew you were vulnerable.”

Rachel asked:

“Did Mark create the DNA report?”

My father hesitated.

Then answered:

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“But I know he paid for something.”

The room went silent.

“What?”

My father looked at me.

“The night before Lily was born…”

He stopped.

“Mark transferred money to a private laboratory.”

Rachel immediately looked up.

“Do you have proof?”

My father nodded.

“Yes.”

He walked to a cabinet.

Removed an old file.

And handed it to Rachel.

She opened it.

Read the first page.

Then her face changed.

“What?”

I asked.

She looked at me.

“This changes everything.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Rachel held the document.

“The fake DNA report was not created for Chloe.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

She looked at Daniel.

“It was created to remove Daniel from the picture.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

Rachel turned the page.

And there it was.

A company ownership document.

A hidden clause.

A clause that would activate if Daniel lost his family inheritance.

Daniel stared at it.

His face became pale.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He whispered:

“If I was removed as Lily’s father…”

He stopped.

Rachel finished the sentence.

“Your shares would transfer.”

Silence.

The truth finally appeared.

This was never only about love.

It was never only about Chloe.

It was never only about jealousy.

Someone had tried to destroy Daniel’s family…

Because they wanted his money.

And suddenly, the biggest betrayal of my life was connected to something much darker.

A plan.

A financial takeover.

And a person who had been standing close enough to watch us fall apart.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?”

I watched his face lose all color.

“Who is it?”

He slowly turned the phone toward us.

The caller name appeared.

MARK ELLIS.

Daniel answered.

But before he could speak…

A voice came through.

A voice full of confidence.

A voice that sounded like someone who believed he had already won.

“Daniel.”

A pause.

“I think it’s time you learned what your wife’s father has been hiding too.”

The call ended.

And everyone looked at me.

Because suddenly…

May you like

The person who had started this war was not the only one with secrets.

My father had them too.
