CHAPTER 8 — THE LIE INSIDE THE HOSPITAL RECORDS

For the first time that night, Daniel looked as lost as I felt.

Not because he had finally understood my pain.

Not because he finally understood what he had done to me.

But because the person he had trusted had become someone he could no longer explain.

Chloe.

The woman he had defended.

The woman he had chosen.

The woman he had called his “responsibility.”

She had secretly accessed my daughter’s medical records.

She had attempted to change them.

And now Daniel had no excuse left.

The hallway remained silent.

Even the people walking past us seemed to sense something was wrong.

Rachel took the document from my hand and studied it carefully.

“Jennifer, we need to leave.”

I looked at her.

“Leave?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

“This conversation is no longer about a marriage problem.”

She lowered her voice.

“This involves potential medical fraud.”

Daniel immediately reacted.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

“I need to understand what happened.”

I stared at him.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because months ago, I would have comforted him.

I would have held his hand.

I would have told him everything would be okay.

But now?

I felt nothing.

The man standing in front of me had spent months protecting another woman.

Now that woman had become a threat to him.

And suddenly, he wanted answers.

I looked at him.

“You should have asked questions before.”

His face fell.

“I know.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t.”

My voice remained calm.

“You only care now because the truth is hurting you.”

Daniel looked away.

Because he knew.

Rachel closed her folder.

“We need copies of everything.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because records disappear.”

The words made him uncomfortable.

“What does that mean?”

Rachel looked at him.

“It means someone who is willing to manipulate medical information may also be willing to destroy evidence.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because suddenly, Chloe’s actions seemed much bigger.

This was not just a woman trying to steal my husband.

This was someone who had carefully entered our lives.

Someone who had planned.

Someone who had prepared.

My mother walked toward us with Lily in her arms.

The moment I saw my daughter, everything else became secondary.

I reached for her.

She opened her tiny eyes.

Completely unaware of the disaster surrounding her.

I held her close.

And one thought kept repeating in my mind.

How long had people been making decisions about her without me?

How many things had Daniel hidden?

How many things had Chloe touched?

Daniel watched us.

His expression changed.

Maybe he finally understood what he had risked losing.

Not just me.

Not just our marriage.

His daughter.

The one person who never deserved any of this.

“Jennifer.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His voice was quiet.

“I’m sorry.”

I stared at him.

The apology sounded different now.

Smaller.

Weaker.

Like it came from a man who had finally realized there was no easy way back.

But I still asked:

“For what?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“For everything.”

I almost looked away.

Because “everything” was a convenient word.

It covered everything and nothing.

“You need to be more specific.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I’m sorry I cheated.”

Silence.

“I’m sorry I lied.”

Another pause.

“I’m sorry I chose Chloe over you.”

My fingers tightened around Lily’s blanket.

Then he said the one thing I never expected.

“I’m sorry I made you believe you were the problem.”

That one hurt.

Because it was true.

For months, Daniel had made me question myself.

Was I too demanding?

Was I too emotional?

Was I too focused on the baby?

Was I not enough?

But I was never the problem.

His choices were.

I looked at him.

“I hope one day you understand what you did.”

Daniel nodded.

“I do.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You understand the consequences.”

He looked confused.

“That’s different.”

Because understanding consequences came after getting caught.

Understanding pain came before.

And Daniel had failed at that.

Rachel checked her phone.

Then her expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

She looked at me.

“Someone just accessed the case file.”

My stomach tightened.

“What case file?”

“The documents I sent to my office.”

Daniel immediately looked concerned.

“Who?”

Rachel showed us the notification.

A login attempt.

Unknown device.

Location.

The same city.

My heart started beating faster.

“Can you identify it?”

Rachel shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Daniel suddenly stepped back.

“What if it’s Chloe?”

I looked at him.

A strange silence followed.

Because for the first time, Daniel said her name with fear instead of affection.

Rachel looked at him.

“Does she know about the lawyer?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“She knew.”

I turned toward him.

“How?”

Daniel looked embarrassed.

“I told her.”

My eyes closed.

Of course.

Of course he did.

“She knew everything.”

Daniel whispered.

“I thought she was helping me.”

I looked at him.

“And now?”

He had no answer.

Because now he understood.

The woman he thought was saving him might have been collecting information about him.

Rachel suddenly received another notification.

This time, her face changed completely.

“Jennifer.”

Her voice was serious.

“What?”

She looked at the screen.

“The hospital sent the original birth record.”

My heart stopped.

“The original?”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked at Daniel.

“Because the altered record was not the only thing changed.”

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“What else was changed?”

Rachel slowly turned the screen toward me.

There was a line highlighted.

A line I had never seen before.

A line that should never have existed.

Father information: Pending confirmation.

I stared at it.

My hands went cold.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel whispered:

“No…”

I looked at him.

“You know something.”

He looked terrified.

“Jennifer, listen to me.”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“You knew.”

“I didn’t know this.”

“But you knew there was a question.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

And that was the moment I understood.

The night Lily was born.

The secret Daniel buried.

The reason Chloe had access.

The reason the records were changed.

It all connected to one terrifying possibility.

Daniel had spent months believing he was protecting me from the truth.

But maybe the truth was something he was protecting himself from.

Rachel looked at the document again.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Jennifer…”

“Before we make any assumptions…”

She paused.

“We need a DNA test.”

The hallway became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

The baby I loved more than anything in the world.

And suddenly, a question I never wanted to ask entered my mind.

A question that could destroy every person standing there.

Was Daniel hiding the truth about Lily?

Or was someone trying to make him believe she was never his?

I held my daughter closer.

Because whatever the answer was…

May you like

I was going to find it.

No matter who it hurt.
