CHAPTER 9 — THE GHOST INSIDE THE MANSION

The darkness lasted only twelve seconds.
But those twelve seconds felt longer than the last ten years of my marriage.
Because darkness was where secrets lived.
And tonight…
The secrets had finally found us.
The emergency lights activated one by one.
A faint red glow filled the mansion halls.
The same mansion where Nathan had planned my estruction.
The same place where he believed nobody would ever challenge him.
But now…
Every wall felt different.
Every room felt like it was hiding another piece of the truth.
My father immediately moved toward me.
“Stay close.”
I looked at him.
“I am not running.”
His expression softened.
“I know.”
A pause.
“That is why I am worried.”
Those words surprised me.
Because my entire life, I thought my father saw me as someone who needed protection.
But tonight I realized something.
He was not afraid because he thought I was weak.
He was afraid because he knew exactly how strong I could become when I finally stopped being afraid.
Security teams spread through the mansion.
The assistants checked the systems.
The cameras restarted.
The doors were locked.
But everyone knew the same thing.
Someone had entered the system.
Someone who understood the mansion better than anyone.
Someone who knew exactly when the pendant would be opened.
Nathan stood near the table.
Quiet.
Watching.
I noticed.
“You knew this would happen.”
His eyes moved toward me.
“No.”
“You expected it.”
He looked away.
That was enough.
I stepped closer.
“Nathan.”
He sighed.
“I knew Victoria would not disappear without leaving something behind.”
“You knew she was involved.”
“Yes.”
My anger returned.
“And you still said nothing.”
Nathan looked at me.
“You would not have believed me.”
I almost laughed.
“You spent ten years lying to me.”
His face tightened.
“I know.”
“Then why would I believe you?”
Because for once…
He had no answer.
The man who always had a perfect explanation finally had nothing.
My father looked at Nathan.
“You are going to tell us everything you know.”
Nathan remained silent.
Charles stepped closer.
“Now.”
Nathan looked toward the windows.
“The first time I met Victoria…”
A pause.
“I was twenty-six.”
The room became quiet.
“She approached me before I knew Elizabeth.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“She told me about the Whitmore family.”
Nathan continued.
“She told me about your mother’s investigation.”
My father’s expression changed.
“She knew about my wife?”
Nathan nodded.
“She knew everything.”
“Why?”
Nathan looked at me.
“Because Victoria believed your mother left something behind.”
“The pendant.”
“Yes.”
I touched it unconsciously.
“She believed your mother had hidden the evidence inside it.”
My father frowned.
“Then why did she let Elizabeth keep it?”
Nathan answered immediately.
“Because she did not know how to open it.”
Silence.
My mother had designed the pendant.
Not for the strongest person.
Not for the richest person.
Not for the smartest person.
For me.
Nathan continued.
“Victoria spent years trying to force Elizabeth into revealing the secret.”
My face became cold.
“She used you.”
Nathan nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you agreed.”
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
That single word hurt more than any excuse.
Because he finally admitted it.
No defense.
No manipulation.
No pretending.
Just the truth.
“I was supposed to marry Elizabeth.”
Nathan said.
“Gain access to the Whitmore network.”
“Help Victoria locate the evidence.”
“And after that?”
He hesitated.
I already knew.
“After that, you planned to leave me.”
Nathan said nothing.
The silence confirmed it.
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
A bitter laugh.
“You really are unbelievable.”
Nathan looked at her.
She shook her head.
“All this time…”
She stared at him.
“I thought I was the woman you chose.”
Her voice cracked.
“But I was just another tool.”
Nathan looked uncomfortable.
For the first time, Vanessa saw Nathan exactly as he was.
Not the charming businessman.
Not the romantic man who whispered promises.
A man who used people.
She removed her engagement-style necklace and dropped it onto the table.
“You deserve everything happening to you.”
Nathan did not respond.
Because he knew she was right.
The assistant suddenly interrupted.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Everyone turned.
“The security footage.”
My father looked at him.
“What about it?”
“There is something strange.”
He brought up the mansion cameras.
The footage from before the blackout appeared.
At first, nothing.
Then…
A figure appeared.
Walking through the east hallway.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the person immediately.
Victoria.
But that was impossible.
She had already left the country.
My father stared at the screen.
“When was this recorded?”
The assistant checked.
His face changed.
“Ten minutes ago.”
Nobody spoke.
Victoria was inside the mansion.
Now.
My father immediately ordered:
“Lock every exit.”
Security moved.
Nathan looked terrified.
“She came back.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
Nathan stared at the screen.
“Because she knows.”
“Knows what?”
He swallowed.
“She knows you opened the pendant.”
The camera showed Victoria walking closer.
Closer.
Closer.
Until she stopped directly in front of the camera.
Then she looked up.
Straight into the lens.
Like she knew we were watching.
And then…
She smiled.
The screen went black.
A message appeared.
ELIZABETH.
Everyone froze.
Another line appeared.
YOU FINALLY FOUND THE TRUTH.
My hands tightened.
Then the final message appeared.
NOW COME FIND OUT WHY YOUR MOTHER CHOSE TO DIE.
The screen disappeared.
Nobody moved.
Because the message changed everything.
Not because Victoria threatened me.
Not because she returned.
But because of one sentence.
My mother chose to die.
Not was killed.
Chose.
And suddenly…
The biggest question was no longer who betrayed my family.
The biggest question was:
May you like
What did my mother discover that was so dangerous…
That she believed death was the only way to protect me?
