CHAPTER 12 — THE FATHER I THOUGHT I KNEW

The accusation remained on the screen.
A single sentence.
A sentence powerful enough to destroy everything I believed.
THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MOTHER’S DEATH WAS CHARLES WHITMORE.
My father’s name.
My father’s face.
My father’s signature.
Everything inside me wanted to reject it.
Immediately.
Without question.
Because some truths are too painful to even consider.
A stranger betraying you hurts.
A husband betraying you breaks your heart.
But a parent…
A parent is supposed to be the one place where you are safe.
My father looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not the fear Nathan showed when his empire collapsed.
Not the fear of losing money.
Not the fear of losing power.
A different kind of fear.
The fear of losing his daughter.
“Elizabeth.”
His voice was quiet.
“Look at me.”
I wanted to.
I really did.
But my eyes kept moving back to the screen.
Back to the evidence.
Back to the signature.
The same signature I had seen on documents my entire life.
The same handwriting that signed my birthday cards.
The same hand that held mine when I was a child.
My father stepped closer.
“I know what this looks like.”
I finally looked at him.
“Do you?”
The question hurt both of us.
Because I had never spoken to him that way.
Not once.
Nathan watched silently.
For years, he controlled every conversation.
Tonight, he was watching a family fall apart.
And maybe…
That was the first time he understood what destruction really looked like.
My father shook his head.
“Claire is lying.”
Nathan suddenly spoke.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
My father’s eyes became cold.
“You believe her?”
Nathan looked at the screen.
“I believe she knows something.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
Nathan paused.
“But it means there is a reason she wants us to believe this.”
I looked at him.
“You are defending my father?”
Nathan looked at me.
“No.”
A pause.
“I am saying this because I know how Victoria works.”
That stopped everyone.
Nathan continued.
“She never reveals the whole truth.”
“She reveals the part that creates the most damage.”
My father looked at him.
“And you know this because?”
Nathan looked away.
“Because I spent years watching her manipulate people.”
The honesty was uncomfortable.
Because it was coming from the man who manipulated me.
But he was right about one thing.
Victoria’s greatest weapon was truth mixed with lies.
Enough truth to make people believe the lie.
My father turned toward the assistant.
“Find everything about Claire Hawthorne.”
The assistant nodded.
“Already searching.”
“And the signature?”
The assistant looked at the document.
“We need forensic analysis.”
“Do it.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Nathan walked toward the table.
“There is something else.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He stared at the image.
“The night your mother died…”
My father became still.
Nathan continued.
“Victoria was not the only person who disappeared.”
My father’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Nathan looked at him.
“Daniel Ashford disappeared for three months.”
Silence.
My father frowned.
“I was told he was overseas.”
Nathan shook his head.
“That was the story.”
My father looked toward the files.
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?”
Nathan answered honestly.
“Because I was afraid.”
The answer surprised everyone.
Nathan Ashford admitting fear.
Impossible.
“What were you afraid of?”
Nathan looked at me.
“Finding out that everything I built was based on a lie.”
Those words stayed in my mind.
Because Nathan was finally experiencing what I had experienced.
The moment when your entire reality collapses.
The moment when you realize the person you trusted was not who they claimed to be.
My father suddenly received a notification.
He looked at his phone.
Then froze.
“What?”
I asked.
He did not answer.
He handed me the phone.
A message.
From Claire.
Do not trust Charles.
My stomach dropped.
Another message appeared.
He will tell you he protected your mother.
A pause.
That part is true.
I looked at the screen.
Then the next message arrived.
But he did not protect her from the person who wanted her dead.
My father stared.
“What does that mean?”
A final message appeared.
Ask him why he never told Elizabeth about the hospital room.
The room became silent.
I looked at my father.
“What hospital room?”
He said nothing.
And that silence was worse than any answer.
“Dad.”
His face changed.
“Elizabeth…”
“What hospital room?”
He looked down.
For a moment…
I saw the old version of him.
The father who used to carry me when I fell.
The father who told me monsters were not real.
Then I saw something else.
A man carrying a secret.
“I wanted to tell you.”
I felt my heart sink.
“Tell me what?”
My father closed his eyes.
“The night your mother died…”
A pause.
“She did not die immediately.”
Nobody moved.
“She survived.”
The words hit me like a wave.
“What?”
My father’s voice broke.
“She was alive when they brought her to the hospital.”
I stepped backward.
“Why didn’t I know?”
“Because you were a child.”
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“Why didn’t I know?”
My father looked at me.
“Because someone tried to finish what they started.”
My breathing stopped.
“Who?”
My father looked at the screen.
At Claire’s messages.
At the evidence.
Then he finally said the words he had been hiding for twenty years.
“Your mother told me who did it.”
A pause.
“And before she died…”
His voice became almost a whisper.
“She gave me one name.”
Everyone waited.
I waited.
The entire world seemed to wait.
My father looked at me.
“The person who attacked your mother…”
A tear formed in his eye.
“Was someone we trusted.”
“Someone who was standing beside us.”
“Someone who knew exactly how to destroy our family.”
I whispered:
“Who?”
My father looked toward the mansion doors.
And answered:
“Your aunt Victoria.”
Silence.
But before anyone could react…
The mansion security alarm suddenly activated.
The assistant checked the cameras.
His face changed.
“Mr. Whitmore…”
“What?”
“There is someone outside.”
My father turned.
“Who?”
The assistant looked at the screen.
A woman stood in the rain.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Claire Hawthorne.
Holding a file.
Looking directly at the mansion.
Then another message appeared on the system.
Not from Claire.
From inside the house.
YOU FOUND HER.
May you like
A pause.
NOW ASK HER WHO SHE WAS PROTECTING.
