CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE ASHFORD EMPIRE

The first thing Nathan did after hearing the words was smile.

Not because he was calm.

Not because he had won.

But because he believed he had found a weakness.

A crack.

A small opening he could use.

For years, Nathan Ashford had survived by finding weaknesses in other people.

He studied fears.

He studied mistakes.

He studied the exact moment when someone lost confidence.

And tonight…

He thought he had finally found mine.

“You don’t have everything.”

His voice was quieter now.

More controlled.

Almost like the old Nathan had returned.

The man who could charm investors.

The man who could convince strangers he was the smartest person in the room.

The man who could turn any situation around with a perfect speech.

He looked at my father.

“Charles Whitmore.”

A small laugh escaped him.

“You really thought you could walk into my house and end everything?”

Nobody answered.

Nathan stepped closer.

“You have recordings.”

He pointed toward the sapphire pendant.

“You have financial documents.”

He looked at the folders.

“But you don’t know the entire story.”

My father remained silent.

That bothered Nathan.

Because Nathan needed reactions.

Fear.

Anger.

Doubt.

Anything.

But my father gave him nothing.

“You know what your problem is?”

Nathan continued.

“You always believed Elizabeth was telling you the whole truth.”

My body became still.

Nathan noticed.

And he smiled.

There it was.

The reaction he wanted.

A tiny movement.

A tiny hesitation.

He thought he had found something.

“There.”

Nathan looked at my father.

“You saw it too.”

Charles’ eyes moved toward me.

Not with suspicion.

With concern.

That was the difference.

Nathan wanted to create doubt.

My father wanted to understand.

“What is he talking about?”

Charles asked.

I looked away.

Because this was the one part of the story I had never told anyone.

Not Nathan.

Not my father.

Not even the investigators who helped me collect evidence.

Because I was ashamed.

Because I thought admitting it would make me look weak.

Nathan noticed my silence.

And his smile grew.

“Tell him.”

I said nothing.

“Tell your father how it started.”

The room became painfully quiet.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

She looked entertained again.

She thought she was watching my downfall.

She did not understand.

The truth was never my enemy.

The truth was the weapon I had been preparing.

I looked at my father.

“I found the first account almost eleven months ago.”

Charles listened.

“Nathan had been moving money through several companies.”

I looked at the documents.

“But he was not working alone.”

Nathan’s expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

And that was enough.

“You know who helped him.”

I looked directly at him.

Nathan said nothing.

My father noticed.

“Who?”

I took a breath.

“The person who introduced Nathan to the offshore network.”

A pause.

“The person who created the first fake corporation.”

Another pause.

“The person who taught him how to hide money.”

I looked at Nathan.

“Was my uncle.”

Nobody moved.

The silence felt impossible.

My father’s expression finally changed.

“Your uncle?”

I nodded.

“Daniel Ashford.”

Nathan’s father’s younger brother.

A man everyone believed was retired.

A respected former financial advisor.

A man who spent years presenting himself as the quiet member of the Ashford family.

The reasonable one.

The honest one.

But I discovered something different.

Daniel was the architect.

Nathan was only the face.

The public image.

The person everyone blamed.

But behind the scenes…

Daniel built the system.

Nathan expanded it.

Together, they created an empire built on deception.

My father slowly turned toward Nathan.

“You and your uncle.”

Nathan looked away.

For the first time…

He looked uncomfortable.

“Don’t pretend you’re shocked.”

His voice became colder.

“Everyone in this room benefits from power.”

My father stared at him.

“No.”

Nathan laughed.

“You think you’re different?”

He pointed toward me.

“Your daughter married into wealth.”

“You enjoyed the lifestyle.”

“You enjoyed the name.”

“You enjoyed the protection.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“Don’t act innocent now.”

That was the moment I understood.

Nathan still did not understand.

He thought money was the same as power.

He thought luxury was the same as happiness.

He thought everyone measured life the way he did.

I stepped closer.

“You know what your biggest mistake was?”

Nathan looked at me.

“You thought I loved your empire.”

His expression changed.

“I loved the man I thought you were.”

A silence followed.

“And when I discovered who you really were…”

I touched the sapphire pendant.

“I stopped trying to save you.”

Nathan looked away.

But Vanessa spoke.

“You are still pretending you are the victim.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“You married him because of his money.”

She smiled.

“You stayed because you enjoyed the lifestyle.”

I looked at her.

And I almost felt sorry for her.

Because she truly believed that.

She believed Nathan’s version of reality.

She believed expensive clothes meant happiness.

She believed power meant control.

She did not know the truth.

Nathan never loved her either.

He only used her.

The same way he used everyone.

“You think Nathan chose you because you were special?”

My words made her smile disappear.

“He chose you because you were useful.”

Nathan’s eyes sharpened.

“Enough.”

But Vanessa looked at him.

Confused.

Because deep down…

She knew I was right.

My father’s assistant interrupted.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

He held a tablet.

“There is another issue.”

Everyone turned.

“What now?”

The assistant looked nervous.

“The investigation team found additional accounts.”

Charles frowned.

“How many?”

The assistant hesitated.

“Thirty-seven.”

Nathan’s face changed.

“What?”

“Thirty-seven hidden accounts connected to Ashford Holdings.”

Charles looked at the screen.

“But that is not the biggest problem.”

“What is?”

The assistant looked at me.

“The accounts were opened before Elizabeth married Nathan.”

My heart stopped.

Because I knew what that meant.

Nathan was not hiding money after our marriage.

He was already doing it before I entered his life.

But then the assistant said something that changed everything.

“The oldest account…”

He swallowed.

“Was opened using Elizabeth’s personal identification information.”

Nobody spoke.

My father turned toward me.

Nathan smiled.

A slow, dangerous smile.

And suddenly…

I understood.

This was not just about exposing Nathan.

This was about someone who had been planning to destroy me long before tonight.

Someone who had used my own identity.

My own name.

My own life.

As part of their crime.

May you like

And somewhere in the shadows…

Someone had been waiting for Nathan and me to destroy each other.
