CHAPTER 15 — THE WOMAN INSIDE THE PLAN

The screen remained frozen.
My name was still there.
A name that suddenly felt like a weapon.
AUTHORIZED BY: ELIZABETH WHITMORE
I stared at it.
Trying to understand how my own identity had become the final key in someone else’s war.
My entire life, I thought I was running away from people who wanted to control me.
Nathan.
Victoria.
The Ashfords.
The Blackthornes.
But now I realized something much worse.
Everyone had been waiting for me to arrive at this exact moment.
The moment when I discovered the truth.
The moment when I was angry enough.
Strong enough.
Desperate enough.
To activate something I did not even know existed.
My father looked at the screen.
“No.”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“No, this cannot happen.”
I turned toward him.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
Because for the first time tonight…
He looked helpless.
“Because your mother would never create something that could put you in danger.”
Claire stepped closer.
“She did not.”
Everyone looked at her.
Claire stared at the screen.
“She created a protection system.”
A pause.
“Someone changed the purpose.”
My father immediately understood.
“Damian.”
Claire nodded.
“He corrupted the system.”
Nathan looked confused.
“But how?”
Claire looked at him.
“Because he had access.”
Nathan frowned.
“No one had access.”
Claire looked at him.
“Your family did.”
The words hit him.
Because the Ashfords had been involved from the beginning.
Daniel.
Victoria.
Nathan.
Every person who touched the empire left behind another weakness.
Damian did not need to break through the system.
He only needed to wait until someone opened the door.
And tonight…
I opened it.
My father looked at me.
“Elizabeth.”
I knew that tone.
The tone of a father trying to protect his daughter.
But this time…
I needed answers.
“What did my mother leave me?”
Silence.
My father looked away.
“Dad.”
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know everything.”
The honesty surprised me.
“You don’t?”
“No.”
He looked at the pendant.
“Your mother trusted Claire with part of the plan.”
Claire nodded.
“She knew Charles would try to protect you.”
My father looked hurt.
“And that was wrong?”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“But she also knew protection could become a prison.”
Those words stayed with me.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
Everyone wanted to protect me.
But nobody trusted me enough to tell me the truth.
And because of that…
The people who wanted to hurt me had more information than I did.
Nathan suddenly spoke.
“There is something missing.”
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at the transfer screen.
“The authorization.”
My father frowned.
“What about it?”
Nathan pointed.
“Damian cannot use Elizabeth’s identity alone.”
Claire nodded.
“Correct.”
“He needs something else.”
A silence followed.
Nathan looked at me.
“He needs her consent.”
My stomach tightened.
“I never gave consent.”
Nathan shook his head.
“Not consciously.”
The room became quiet.
“What does that mean?”
Nathan looked at the pendant.
“The pendant.”
I touched it.
“The recording device?”
“No.”
Nathan shook his head.
“That was only the first layer.”
My father stepped closer.
“What else is inside?”
Claire looked at me.
“Your mother created a biometric key.”
I stared.
“A key?”
Claire nodded.
“Your DNA.”
The room went silent.
My father looked shocked.
“Your mother planned this before Elizabeth even understood what power was.”
Claire continued.
“The system recognizes her.”
“It does not need a signature.”
“It does not need a password.”
“It only needs Elizabeth.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“So Damian is using me.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
My anger grew.
Not the helpless anger I felt with Nathan.
A different kind.
The anger of finally understanding.
Everyone had spent years deciding my future.
Now someone was trying to use my own existence as a weapon.
I looked at the screen.
“Then we stop it.”
My father looked at me.
“We will.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Everyone became quiet.
“This time, I will.”
Nathan watched me.
And something changed in his expression.
Respect.
Maybe for the first time.
“You have a plan.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He almost smiled.
“The old Elizabeth would have waited for someone else to save her.”
I looked directly at him.
“The old Elizabeth trusted the wrong people.”
A silence followed.
Because he knew he deserved that.
My father looked toward the assistant.
“What can we do?”
The assistant checked the system.
“We can freeze parts of the transfer.”
“Parts?”
He nodded.
“Damian designed the system to resist interference.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning if we attack directly, the system will destroy the remaining assets.”
My father’s expression hardened.
“He wants us trapped.”
“Yes.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Then we cannot fight the system.”
Everyone looked at him.
“We have to make Damian think he already won.”
I stared at him.
“You want to trick him.”
Nathan nodded.
“For once, we use his weakness.”
“What weakness?”
Nathan looked at the screen.
“His arrogance.”
The answer was simple.
But true.
Damian believed he controlled everything because he had always been above everyone else.
He believed people were predictable.
He believed pain made people weak.
He believed betrayal destroyed loyalty.
But he did not understand one thing.
Pain could also create someone dangerous.
Someone who had nothing left to lose.
Claire suddenly received a message.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“Damian knows we are trying to reverse the transfer.”
My father immediately turned.
“How?”
Claire looked terrified.
“Because he has someone inside this mansion.”
Everyone became still.
Security officers checked the room.
Nathan looked around.
“Impossible.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“Not security.”
Her eyes moved slowly.
Toward us.
“Family.”
The word created silence.
My father looked at everyone.
My heart started beating faster.
Because there was only one person left.
One person who had access.
One person who knew enough.
One person who had been close enough to betray us.
Then the mansion doors opened.
A figure walked inside.
Everyone froze.
Because the person standing there was someone we thought had disappeared.
Someone who was supposed to be helping us.
Someone who knew every secret.
Claire whispered:
“No…”
My father stepped backward.
“Impossible.”
The person smiled.
And said:
“Hello, Elizabeth.”
I recognized the voice.
The same voice from the message.
The same voice that had guided us here.
The traitor was not outside.
May you like
The traitor was already inside.
And they had been listening to everything.
