CHAPTER 5 — THE ORIGINAL SIN OF THE ASHFORD FAMILY

The folder remained open on the screen.
Nobody touched the keyboard.
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes the most terrifying moments were not when secrets were revealed.
They were the seconds before.
The moment when everyone knew something was coming.
The moment when a person’s entire reality was about to change.
Nathan stood several feet away from the table.
For the first time since I met him…
He looked small.
Not physically.
Nathan was still tall.
Still confident.
Still dressed in an expensive suit worth more than most people earned in months.
But the illusion was gone.
The powerful businessman disappeared.
The perfect husband disappeared.
The untouchable Nathan Ashford disappeared.
What remained was a man afraid of what was inside a computer.
My father looked at the screen.
“Open it.”
The assistant nodded.
The first file appeared.
A scanned document.
Then another.
Then another.
The dates went back decades.
Before Nathan was born.
Before I knew the Ashford name.
Before anyone had heard of Ashford Holdings.
My father leaned closer.
“What is this?”
The assistant opened the first document.
“It appears to be an original financial agreement.”
“Between who?”
The assistant’s expression changed.
“Between Daniel Ashford…”
A pause.
“And someone named Richard Vale.”
I felt my body become tense.
The name meant something.
Not because I knew him personally.
Because I had seen it before.
Hidden inside Nathan’s old records.
A name connected to several companies.
Several transfers.
Several disappearances.
My father noticed my reaction.
“You know that name?”
I shook my head.
“Not personally.”
I looked at Nathan.
“But Nathan did.”
Nathan remained silent.
That silence was louder than any confession.
The assistant opened another file.
This one was a video.
An old recording.
A private meeting.
The quality was poor.
But the voices were clear.
A younger Daniel Ashford sat across from another man.
Richard Vale.
Older.
Cold.
Controlled.
The kind of person who never raised his voice because he never needed to.
The recording began.
Daniel looked nervous.
Richard looked calm.
“You understand the agreement.”
Daniel nodded.
“The company structure will protect us.”
“And the money?”
“Moved through three different holding companies.”
“Good.”
Richard leaned back.
“No one follows the money if the trail looks too complicated.”
The younger Daniel smiled.
“And if anyone discovers it?”
Richard answered immediately.
“Then we find someone else to blame.”
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The Ashford empire was not built through intelligence.
It was built through deception.
My father looked at Nathan.
“Who is Richard Vale?”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t know.”
A lie.
A terrible one.
Because Nathan was forgetting something.
I knew him.
Better than anyone.
I knew when he lied.
I knew when he was afraid.
I knew when he was preparing another manipulation.
“You know exactly who he is.”
Nathan looked at me.
“You have no idea what you are talking about.”
I smiled slightly.
“That is what you always say when the truth gets close.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Nathan.”
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was different now.
No confidence.
No arrogance.
Just confusion.
“What is happening?”
Nathan ignored her.
But she continued.
“You told me your family built everything legally.”
Nathan’s eyes hardened.
“Not now.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You lied to me too?”
Nobody answered.
Because she finally understood.
Nathan did not have loyalty.
Not to his wife.
Not to his mistress.
Not even to his own family.
He only had loyalty to himself.
My father continued reviewing the files.
More documents appeared.
Bank transfers.
Property records.
Encrypted messages.
Then one file appeared that made everyone stop.
The title was:
PROJECT ELIZABETH
My heart froze.
My father looked at me.
“What is that?”
I had no answer.
Because my name was there.
My name.
On a file created before I married Nathan.
The assistant opened it.
The first page appeared.
My personal information.
My education.
My family history.
My habits.
My relationships.
Everything.
A complete profile.
Like someone had been studying me.
My father’s face became darker.
“Who created this?”
The assistant checked the metadata.
“Daniel Ashford.”
I felt a chill.
Before Nathan met me…
Before the wedding…
Before the marriage…
Daniel Ashford was already investigating me.
But why?
The next document answered that question.
It was a contract.
A marriage agreement.
Not between Nathan and me.
Between Nathan and Daniel.
The purpose:
Access to Whitmore family connections.
My breathing stopped.
My father slowly looked at me.
“Nathan married you because of me.”
The room went silent.
Nathan finally spoke.
“No.”
His voice was weaker.
“You are misunderstanding.”
I looked at him.
“Am I?”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because the truth was there.
Written in his own family’s documents.
I was not chosen because Nathan loved me.
I was selected.
A target.
A doorway.
A connection to my father’s influence.
Everything I thought was real…
Was carefully planned.
My marriage.
My relationship.
My entire life with Nathan.
A question burned inside me.
How long had he been pretending?
How long had every kiss been a lie?
How long had every promise been part of a plan?
Nathan stepped toward me.
“Elizabeth.”
I moved back.
The expression on his face changed.
For once…
He looked almost human.
Almost regretful.
“I was going to tell you.”
I stared at him.
“When?”
He said nothing.
“After ten years?”
Silence.
“After you destroyed my life?”
Nothing.
My father stepped between us.
“You will not speak to her alone again.”
Nathan looked at him.
“You think this changes everything?”
Charles looked at the screen.
“No.”
A pause.
“This proves everything.”
Then another file opened automatically.
Nobody touched it.
The assistant looked confused.
“Sir…”
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
The screen showed a message.
One sentence.
Black letters on a white background.
A warning.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THEN NATHAN HAS FAILED.
Everyone froze.
Another line appeared.
THE REAL PERSON BEHIND THE ASHFORD EMPIRE IS STILL FREE.
My father stepped closer.
“Who wrote this?”
The screen loaded one final image.
A photograph.
An old photograph.
And the person standing beside Daniel Ashford…
Was someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had been pretending to protect me for years.
Someone I trusted.
Someone inside my own family.
My hands became cold.
Because the truth was worse than Nathan.
Much worse.
Nathan was only a weapon.
May you like
The person who created the weapon…
Was the person who had been smiling beside me all along.
