CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST FORTY-EIGHT HOURS

The countdown continued.

47:59:58

47:59:57

47:59:56

Every second felt like a warning.

Not just a threat.

A declaration.

The man on the screen was not hiding.

He wanted us to see him.

He wanted us to understand that everything happening was intentional.

Every betrayal.

Every lie.

Every ruined relationship.

Every destroyed piece of trust.

It was all part of a plan.

My father stepped toward the screen.

His face had changed.

The calm confidence was gone.

Because he knew exactly who was standing there.

“Damian Blackthorne.”

The name left his mouth like a curse.

The man on the screen smiled.

“Charles.”

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

That was what made it terrifying.

People like Damian Blackthorne never needed to scream.

They never needed to threaten.

They already knew they had power.

“You finally opened the door.”

My father stared at him.

“What have you done?”

Damian smiled.

“What have I done?”

A quiet laugh.

“I corrected history.”

Claire moved closer to me.

Her expression was tense.

Because she knew this man.

She knew what he was capable of.

Damian leaned back.

“Twenty years ago, your family believed they defeated me.”

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You lost.”

“No.”

Damian shook his head.

“I waited.”

The countdown continued.

47:58:42

“You always misunderstood power, Charles.”

Damian looked directly into the camera.

“You thought power was money.”

A pause.

“You thought power was companies.”

Another pause.

“You thought power was influence.”

He smiled.

“Power is knowing what people will do before they do it.”

My eyes moved toward Nathan.

And suddenly I understood.

Nathan.

Victoria.

Daniel.

Everyone.

They were not random criminals.

They were pieces placed carefully on a board.

Damian had studied them.

Used them.

Controlled them.

My father looked at Claire.

“How long have you known?”

Claire looked down.

“Too long.”

“Why did you not come to me?”

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because I did.”

Silence.

My father froze.

“What?”

Claire looked at him.

“Many times.”

The words hit him.

“What are you saying?”

“I tried to warn you.”

She looked at the screen.

“But every message disappeared.”

My father’s expression changed.

“Who stopped them?”

Claire did not answer.

Because everyone already knew.

Someone inside the family.

Someone with access.

Someone who had been controlling information for years.

Victoria.

My father looked toward the screen.

“Where is she?”

Damian smiled.

“She is exactly where she wants to be.”

The camera moved slightly.

Victoria appeared beside him.

But she looked different.

Not arrogant.

Not confident.

Exhausted.

For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

“Victoria.”

My father’s voice was filled with anger.

She looked at him.

“Charles.”

“You worked with him?”

A painful silence.

Then she answered:

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

I expected denial.

A lie.

An excuse.

But she admitted it.

Just like that.

Nathan stared at her.

“You used me.”

Victoria looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I recruited you.”

Nathan’s face changed.

The difference mattered.

Because Nathan always believed he was a partner.

Not a tool.

Victoria continued.

“You were never supposed to be the final winner.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“What was I supposed to be?”

Victoria looked away.

“A distraction.”

The word destroyed him.

Because Nathan had spent his entire life believing he was the smartest person in every room.

And now he discovered he had only been useful because someone else needed a villain.

I looked at Damian.

“Why?”

His eyes moved toward me.

Finally.

The attention shifted.

To me.

“Because of your mother.”

My expression hardened.

“Leave her out of this.”

Damian smiled.

“That is exactly why you are dangerous.”

“What?”

“You still love someone who is gone.”

He leaned forward.

“Your mother understood the one thing your father never did.”

My father stared.

“What?”

Damian answered:

“People are more loyal to love than to money.”

A silence followed.

My mother.

The pendant.

The plan.

Everything connected.

Damian continued.

“She created something before she died.”

My hand touched the sapphire.

“A system.”

Claire looked at me.

A realization appeared on her face.

“No…”

Damian smiled.

“Yes.”

“What system?”

Damian looked pleased.

“The inheritance protocol.”

The room went quiet.

My father frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Damian looked at me.

“Your mother knew the Ashfords would betray you.”

“She knew Victoria would come after you.”

“She knew I would eventually find the Whitmore assets.”

A pause.

“So she created a final protection.”

My heart raced.

“The pendant.”

Damian nodded.

“The pendant is only the key.”

Claire whispered:

“Then what is the lock?”

Damian smiled.

“You.”

The word echoed.

I felt everyone looking at me.

Nathan.

My father.

Claire.

Everyone.

Damian continued.

“For twenty years, your mother prepared you.”

“No.”

My father stepped forward.

“She was protecting her.”

Damian looked at him.

“You still do not understand.”

A pause.

“She was preparing her because she knew one day Elizabeth would have to choose.”

“Choose what?”

Damian smiled.

“Whether to become like us…”

A pause.

“Or destroy us.”

The countdown continued.

46:59:59

Then Damian ended the transmission.

The screen went black.

Immediately, the assistant received an alert.

His face changed.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

“What?”

“The transfer has started.”

My father looked at him.

“What transfer?”

The assistant turned the screen around.

Every major Whitmore asset was moving.

Stocks.

Properties.

Trust funds.

Ownership rights.

All transferring.

The destination:

A private foundation.

The owner:

Unknown.

But then the system revealed the final authorization.

Everyone froze.

Because the authorization was not from Damian.

Not from Victoria.

Not from Nathan.

It was from me.

AUTHORIZED BY: ELIZABETH WHITMORE

My heart stopped.

“I never signed that.”

Claire stared at the screen.

Then whispered:

“He found the missing piece.”

My father looked at her.

“What piece?”

Claire looked at the sapphire pendant.

“The one thing your mother was afraid of.”

I stared at the screen.

At my own name.

At my own signature.

And suddenly…

I understood.

Someone had not just stolen my identity.

Someone had been waiting for the moment I would inherit everything.

May you like

Because the final stage of the plan…

Required me.
