CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The name on the screen remained there.

CLAIRE HAWTHORNE.

A woman who was supposed to be dead.

A woman whose funeral my family attended.

A woman whose disappearance had been considered a tragic accident.

A woman my mother trusted more than anyone.

My father stared at the screen like he was looking at a ghost.

“No.”

The word escaped his mouth quietly.

Almost like he was trying to convince himself.

“No, that is impossible.”

I looked at him.

“Dad.”

He shook his head.

“Claire died.”

Nathan looked at him.

“That is what everyone was supposed to believe.”

My father turned sharply.

“What do you mean?”

Nathan looked exhausted.

“Because Victoria made sure everyone believed it.”

The room became silent again.

I hated that feeling.

The feeling that every answer created another hundred questions.

My entire life had been built on things that were not true.

My marriage.

My family history.

My mother’s death.

And now…

Someone who was supposed to be gone was reaching out from the shadows.

The assistant tried tracing the message.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

My father looked at him.

“What?”

“The account is real.”

“How?”

“I do not know.”

The assistant looked confused.

“It was created decades ago.”

My father stepped closer.

“Can you locate it?”

The assistant shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Nathan looked at the screen.

“She does not want to be found.”

I turned toward him.

“How do you know?”

Nathan hesitated.

Because once again…

He knew more than he should.

“You met her.”

The words came out slowly.

Nathan looked at me.

“What?”

“You met Claire.”

His expression changed.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

My father noticed too.

“Nathan.”

Nathan looked away.

“Not recently.”

“Then when?”

He remained silent.

My father’s voice became colder.

“When did you meet her?”

Nathan finally answered.

“Before I met Elizabeth.”

The room became still.

My chest tightened.

“How?”

Nathan took a breath.

“Victoria arranged the meeting.”

Of course.

Another connection.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece of a puzzle that had been built around my life.

“She wanted me to understand the history.”

Nathan continued.

“The history between the Ashfords and Whitmores.”

My father looked angry.

“You spoke to Claire about my family?”

“Yes.”

“And what did she tell you?”

Nathan looked at me.

“That your mother knew the truth.”

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What truth?”

Nathan lowered his voice.

“That your mother did not die because of an accident.”

My father closed his eyes.

He already knew where this was going.

“No.”

Nathan continued.

“She was trying to expose someone.”

“Who?”

Nathan looked at the screen.

“Someone inside the Whitmore family.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because I had already accepted betrayal from the Ashfords.

From Nathan.

From Victoria.

But the idea that my mother’s death was connected to someone in our own family…

That was different.

My father stepped away.

“Who?”

Nathan looked toward me.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“But Claire does.”

The screen suddenly turned on again.

Everyone froze.

A video file appeared.

No title.

No description.

Only one sentence.

WATCH THIS BEFORE YOU TRUST ANYONE.

My father reached toward the keyboard.

I stopped him.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at me.

I did not know why.

But something inside me said this was different.

This was not another document.

Not another financial record.

This was a message.

A personal one.

The video started.

At first, there was only darkness.

Then a woman appeared.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Claire Hawthorne.

Alive.

My hands covered my mouth.

Because seeing a dead person breathe was something the mind could not easily accept.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“Elizabeth.”

Her voice was shaking.

“If you are seeing this…”

She paused.

“Then they failed.”

My father leaned closer.

“Who?”

Claire continued.

“I spent twenty years hiding because I knew the truth would get me killed.”

She looked away.

“I watched your mother discover everything.”

A tear appeared in her eye.

“And I watched someone destroy her.”

My heart stopped.

Claire took a breath.

“Elizabeth, your mother did not leave you the pendant because she wanted you to remember her.”

“She left it because she knew one day you would need proof.”

The video showed an old photograph.

My mother.

Claire.

And another person.

A person standing behind them.

Someone whose face was partially hidden.

My father immediately recognized the person.

His expression changed completely.

“No.”

Claire continued.

“The person who destroyed your family was not Nathan.”

“Not Daniel.”

“Not Victoria.”

A pause.

“The Ashfords were only following orders.”

My blood went cold.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“The person who created this entire plan…”

The video glitched.

The image distorted.

Then returned.

And Claire spoke the final words.

“The person responsible for your mother’s death…”

A pause.

“Was Charles Whitmore.”

The room stopped.

My father stepped backward.

Like he had been physically hit.

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“No, that is a lie.”

I stared at him.

My mind refused to process what I had heard.

My father.

The man who came tonight to save me.

The man who promised to destroy Nathan.

The man I trusted.

Could he be the person behind everything?

Claire’s video continued.

“I know you will not believe me.”

“That is why I left evidence.”

“Your mother knew Charles would eventually discover the truth.”

“She knew he would try to hide it.”

The screen showed another file.

A document.

A signature.

My father’s signature.

Dated twenty years earlier.

The night my mother died.

Everyone stared.

Nathan looked shocked.

Even he had not known.

The video ended.

The mansion became silent.

Then Nathan spoke.

Quietly.

“Elizabeth…”

I looked at my father.

For the first time in my life…

I wondered if the person who came to rescue me…

Was actually the person I needed protection from.

My father looked at me.

His eyes were filled with pain.

“Elizabeth.”

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to believe the man standing in front of me was still my father.

But the evidence was there.

The signature.

The message.

The accusation.

And somewhere in the darkness…

Claire Hawthorne was waiting.

Waiting for me to discover the truth.

The truth about my mother.

The truth about Nathan.

May you like

The truth about my family.

And the truth about the man I had trusted my entire life.
