CHAPTER 7 — THE INHERITANCE TRAP

The words on the screen refused to disappear.

FINAL SUCCESSION PLAN

ELIZABETH WHITMORE

My own name looked like it belonged to someone else.

Someone I did not recognize.

Someone who had been part of a game happening around me for years.

My first instinct was disbelief.

My second was anger.

Because everyone had a plan for my life.

Nathan.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Even the people who claimed to protect me.

They all moved pieces around the board.

And somehow…

I was always the piece.

My father noticed my expression.

“Elizabeth.”

I looked at him.

“Did you know about this?”

His face changed immediately.

The answer came before his words.

“No.”

But the hesitation hurt.

Because it reminded me of something I had learned tonight.

Everyone had secrets.

Even good people.

Even family.

Especially family.

The assistant opened the file.

The screen filled with documents.

Legal agreements.

Trust information.

Ownership records.

Inheritance structures.

My father stepped closer.

“What is this?”

The assistant read through the information.

“It appears to be a succession document.”

“Created by who?”

The assistant searched.

Then stopped.

“That is impossible.”

My father looked at him.

“What?”

“There is no creator listed.”

Everyone became silent.

A document without an owner.

A plan without an author.

That was not an accident.

Someone had removed their identity.

Nathan slowly shook his head.

“I told you.”

I looked at him.

“You knew about this.”

Nathan looked tired.

“I knew Victoria was planning something.”

“But you did nothing?”

His eyes lowered.

“I thought I could benefit from it.”

The honesty surprised me.

Not because it was admirable.

Because it was the first honest thing he had said all night.

Nathan had finally stopped pretending.

He was not the victim.

He was not innocent.

He was just another person who believed he could control something much larger than himself.

My father looked disgusted.

“You destroyed your own wife for money.”

Nathan looked at me.

“I destroyed myself.”

The room went quiet.

Because for the first time…

Nathan sounded like he understood what he had done.

But understanding consequences was not the same as forgiveness.

I walked toward the table.

“What does the succession plan mean?”

The assistant continued reading.

“It suggests that after a major collapse of Ashford Holdings and related companies, control of several assets would transfer to Elizabeth Whitmore.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

The assistant opened another section.

Then his face changed.

“Because according to this document…”

He paused.

“Elizabeth is the legal owner of several companies currently believed to belong to Nathan Ashford.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

The assistant showed the records.

Companies.

Properties.

Investments.

All registered under names I recognized.

My name.

But I had never owned them.

I had never signed those documents.

Nathan immediately spoke.

“This is impossible.”

I looked at him.

“You said I signed everything.”

His face became pale.

Because he knew.

He knew what this meant.

The same documents he used to control me…

Had accidentally transferred ownership.

Nathan had spent years forging my identity.

And in doing so…

He may have created evidence that everything belonged to me.

My father looked at the files.

“Victoria planned this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

“She planned for something bigger.”

I pointed at the screen.

“If she wanted control, she would not transfer everything to me.”

My father understood.

“She wanted someone else to discover it.”

Exactly.

Victoria did not want to own the empire.

She wanted the empire destroyed.

And she wanted me standing in the middle of the ruins.

Why?

That was the question.

Nathan suddenly stepped backward.

“I need to leave.”

Two security officers immediately blocked his path.

“You are not leaving.”

Nathan looked at me.

“Elizabeth.”

I did not answer.

“There is something you need to know.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His voice became serious.

“Victoria was afraid of you.”

I almost laughed.

“Afraid of me?”

“Yes.”

Nathan nodded.

“You think she saw you as a victim.”

A pause.

“She didn’t.”

My father watched him carefully.

“What did she see?”

Nathan looked at me.

“She saw the only person who could destroy everything.”

The room became still.

I felt a cold sensation.

Because that did not make sense.

I was not powerful.

I was not a billionaire.

I was not a criminal mastermind.

I was just a woman who discovered her husband’s betrayal.

But Nathan continued.

“Your mother.”

I froze.

My mother.

A name rarely spoken in my family.

A woman who died when I was young.

A woman everyone described as kind.

Gentle.

Loving.

Nathan looked at my father.

“She knew the truth.”

My father’s expression changed.

“What truth?”

Nathan hesitated.

Then said:

“Your mother was the original owner of the Ashford financial network.”

The room exploded into silence.

My father stared at him.

“That is impossible.”

Nathan shook his head.

“Your wife knew.”

I felt dizzy.

“My mother?”

Nathan nodded.

“She built the foundation before she died.”

“No.”

My voice was barely audible.

“That cannot be true.”

Nathan looked at me.

“Victoria spent years trying to find your mother’s hidden records.”

A pause.

“She believed your mother left everything to you.”

My father stepped forward.

“Where are those records?”

Nathan looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.”

“Who does?”

Nathan’s eyes moved back to me.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“You.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The records were never hidden from you.”

My heart began racing.

“They were hidden inside something you carried every day.”

I touched my sapphire pendant.

And suddenly…

Everything became clear.

The pendant was not only a recorder.

My mother gave it to me before she died.

She told me:

“Never lose this.”

I thought it was sentimental.

A memory.

A piece of jewelry.

But maybe…

It was something else.

My father looked at the pendant.

“Elizabeth…”

I slowly removed it from my neck.

For the first time…

I looked at it differently.

Not as a gift.

As a message.

Nathan whispered:

“Victoria spent ten years searching for what your mother left behind.”

A pause.

“She never found it.”

I looked at the sapphire.

“Why?”

Nathan’s expression turned serious.

“Because your mother designed it so only you could open it.”

The room went silent.

The woman everyone tried to control…

The woman everyone underestimated…

Had been carrying the secret that could destroy them all.

Then the pendant suddenly clicked.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny piece of metal.

May you like

And engraved on it were four words.

THE REAL ASHFORD BEGINS HERE.
