CHAPTER 13 — CLAIRE HAWTHORNE RETURNS FROM THE DEAD

The rain outside the mansion became heavier.
The woman standing beyond the gates did not move.
She simply stood there.
Waiting.
Like she had been waiting for this moment for twenty years.
Claire Hawthorne.
The woman everyone believed was dead.
The woman my mother trusted.
The woman who disappeared after my mother’s death.
The woman who now held the missing pieces of the truth.
My father stared at the security screen.
His expression was impossible to read.
Shock.
Fear.
Pain.
Everything appeared at once.
“Open the gate.”
The security officer hesitated.
“Mr. Whitmore…”
“Open it.”
My father’s voice was firm.
But I noticed something.
His hands were shaking.
Nathan noticed too.
And for the first time…
He looked at my father differently.
Not as an enemy.
Not as a powerful man.
As someone carrying a secret.
The gates slowly opened.
Claire walked through the rain.
Every step brought her closer.
Every step made the past feel more alive.
I watched her face carefully.
Trying to find answers.
Trying to find the woman from my childhood memories.
The woman who used to bring me books.
The woman who laughed with my mother.
The woman who disappeared without explanation.
But time had changed her.
Her hair was shorter.
Silver strands mixed with brown.
Her face carried years of exhaustion.
But her eyes…
Her eyes were the same.
The eyes of someone who had spent too long carrying a painful truth alone.
The mansion doors opened.
Claire entered.
Nobody spoke.
Until she looked at me.
And whispered:
“You look exactly like her.”
My heart tightened.
“My mother?”
Claire nodded.
“She would be so proud of you.”
I wanted to believe those words.
But I could not forget the message.
The accusation.
The secrets.
I looked at her.
“Why did you disappear?”
Claire closed her eyes.
Because she knew.
That was the first question.
Not the easiest question.
Not the question she wanted.
The question she deserved.
“Because I was afraid.”
My father stepped forward.
“Afraid of who?”
Claire looked at him.
And the sadness in her expression answered before her words.
“Everyone.”
The room became quiet.
My father looked hurt.
“Claire.”
She shook her head.
“Charles, you have no idea what happened.”
His expression changed.
“Then tell me.”
Claire looked around the mansion.
The place where so many lies had been protected.
The place where Nathan planned to destroy me.
The place where my mother’s secrets finally returned.
“I spent twenty years trying to forget this house.”
She looked at me.
“But your mother never let me.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Claire slowly removed the file from her coat.
She placed it on the table.
“This is everything I saved.”
My father looked at the file.
“What is inside?”
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Claire looked at him.
“That your wife discovered the Ashford empire was only one part of something much larger.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“What larger?”
Claire looked at him.
“You really do not know.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“No.”
Claire looked disappointed.
“Then Victoria was right.”
Nathan became tense.
“What did she say?”
Claire answered:
“She said you were useful because you were intelligent.”
A pause.
“But too arrogant to ever see the whole game.”
The words hit Nathan hard.
Because they were true.
Nathan always believed he was the mastermind.
He never realized he was also being manipulated.
Claire opened the file.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Handwritten notes.
My mother’s handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My hands became cold.
“She wrote these?”
Claire nodded.
“She knew she might not survive.”
My father looked away.
Pain crossed his face.
Claire noticed.
“You never told her daughter.”
My father remained silent.
Claire continued.
“You promised her.”
The room froze.
My father looked at Claire.
“What?”
“You promised her you would tell Elizabeth everything when she was old enough.”
My father’s face changed.
Because he knew exactly what promise she meant.
I looked between them.
“You knew?”
My father did not answer.
“Dad.”
His silence hurt.
Claire looked at me.
“Your father wanted to protect you.”
A pause.
“But protecting you became his excuse for hiding the truth.”
My father looked down.
And I realized something.
Maybe my father was not the monster Claire accused him of being.
But maybe he was not innocent either.
Maybe the truth was more complicated.
Claire opened the first document.
“The night your mother died…”
She paused.
“Victoria was not alone.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“Who was with her?”
Claire looked at the document.
“The person who financed everything.”
My father frowned.
“Who?”
Claire turned the page.
A name appeared.
And everyone froze.
Because it was a name none of us expected.
Not Ashford.
Not Whitmore.
Not Caldwell.
A completely different family.
A family that controlled banks.
Media companies.
Political connections.
A family powerful enough to erase evidence.
Claire whispered:
“The Blackthorne family.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You know them?”
Nathan nodded slowly.
“They are the reason my father entered illegal finance.”
My father looked at him.
“Explain.”
Nathan stared at the document.
“The Ashfords were never at the top.”
A pause.
“They were working for them.”
Claire nodded.
“Exactly.”
The room became silent.
Because the entire story changed again.
Nathan was not the beginning.
Victoria was not the beginning.
Daniel was not the beginning.
They were all pieces.
And the real power had been watching from the shadows.
Claire continued.
“Your mother discovered the Blackthornes were planning something.”
“What?”
Claire looked at me.
“Control.”
“Control what?”
She looked at the sapphire pendant.
“Everything your family owned.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Claire pointed to another document.
“And Elizabeth…”
She hesitated.
“You were never just a target.”
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
Claire looked at my father.
Then back at me.
“Your mother created a plan before she died.”
“A plan to destroy them.”
My heartbeat increased.
“A plan involving me?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
“What plan?”
Claire looked at the clock.
Then toward the mansion windows.
Her expression suddenly changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What is it?”
She whispered:
“We have less than forty-eight hours.”
My father stepped forward.
“Until what?”
Claire looked at the dark road outside.
“Until the Blackthorne family activates the final stage.”
Nobody spoke.
Nathan frowned.
“What final stage?”
Claire answered quietly.
“The complete transfer of the Whitmore legacy.”
My blood ran cold.
“Transfer to who?”
Claire looked directly at me.
And said:
“To the person who has been controlling this entire war from the beginning.”
A pause.
“The person who made Nathan marry you.”
“The person who destroyed your mother.”
“The person who turned your family against itself.”
The lights flickered again.
Then every screen in the mansion turned on.
A live video appeared.
A man sat in a dark room.
Smiling.
Older.
Powerful.
Familiar.
And beside him…
Was Victoria.
The man looked directly at the camera.
“Hello, Elizabeth.”
My body froze.
Because I recognized him.
Not from the past.
From now.
From my life.
The man smiled.
“You finally found the truth.”
A pause.
“But you are too late.”
The countdown appeared behind him.
47:59:59
And beneath it…
May you like
A message.
THE WHITMORE EMPIRE WILL BELONG TO ME.
