CHAPTER 19 — The Fortress Beneath the Ocean

The old naval command facility had been abandoned for eighteen years.

At least...

That was what the world believed.

Official records showed the facility was destroyed after a classified military restructuring.

The land was sold.

The buildings were removed.

The entire area was marked as unusable.

But like every secret connected to Orion...

The truth was buried deeper.

Much deeper.

The helicopter flew over the frozen coastline.

Below us stretched nothing but dark water and endless cliffs.

The same ocean where my life had changed.

The same place where Black Tide began.

Ethan sat across from me, checking the tactical equipment.

Nathan was silent.

Too silent.

I looked at him.

"You can still leave."

He didn't look up.

"No."

"Why?"

Nathan finally met my eyes.

"Because my family helped create this."

A pause.

"And I'm tired of pretending I'm different from them."

For years, Nathan and I had been enemies.

Two people trapped inside a war we didn't understand.

But now...

We were fighting the same enemy.

Not Orion.

Not Evelyn.

The lies.

Admiral Reed sat beside the door.

Older.

Tired.

But still carrying himself like the commander he had always been.

"I owe you an apology."

I looked at him.

"For what?"

His eyes lowered.

"For every time I knew something was wrong and chose silence."

A pause.

"I told myself I was protecting you."

He swallowed.

"But sometimes..."

"Silence protects the person hiding the truth."

I said nothing.

Because he was right.

The helicopter began descending.

A storm surrounded the coastline.

Lightning illuminated the cliffs.

And beneath the waves...

The entrance appeared.

A massive steel structure hidden inside the mountain.

Ethan stared.

"That's impossible."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Orion didn't build this."

Admiral Reed looked toward the entrance.

"No."

His expression changed.

"They inherited it."

The helicopter landed.

The four of us stepped onto the frozen platform.

The wind cut through our clothes.

But nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

Once we entered...

There would be no turning back.

The steel door opened.

Not because we forced it.

Because it recognized us.

A voice echoed.

"Welcome back, Commander Reed."

I stopped.

The voice was automated.

But the words were personal.

"System recognizes original subject."

Nathan looked at me.

"Original subject?"

I ignored him.

Because I already knew.

This place had been waiting for me.

Inside was not a military base.

Not exactly.

It was a laboratory.

A massive underground city.

Glass rooms.

Servers.

Observation chambers.

Thousands of screens.

And in the center...

A single room.

My name was written above the door.

CELESTE REED — DEVELOPMENT CHAMBER

I stood frozen.

Ethan whispered:

"They built this around you."

No.

I thought.

They built this because of me.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

Almost empty.

Except for one thing.

A chair.

A child's chair.

My breathing stopped.

Memory returned.

A little girl.

Sitting there.

Crying.

My mother holding my hand.

"Mommy..."

"Why are they watching me?"

Eleanor's voice.

"Because they don't understand you."

"Are they bad?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Some people become so afraid of losing control..."

"That they forget people are not machines."

I touched the chair.

My hand trembled.

Then a hidden drawer opened.

Inside was a small object.

A necklace.

My mother's necklace.

The one I thought was lost forever.

I picked it up.

And immediately...

The room activated.

Every screen turned on.

A message appeared.

FINAL MEMORY KEY DETECTED

Ethan stepped forward.

"Celeste, don't."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if this is the final memory..."

A pause.

"It might be the one they were most afraid of."

I stared at the necklace.

Then pressed it against the scanner.

The lights dimmed.

A recording appeared.

My mother.

But this time...

She was crying.

"Celeste."

Her voice broke.

"If you are watching this..."

"Then I failed to protect you."

I shook my head.

"No..."

The recording continued.

"I need you to know the truth about the night I died."

Everyone became still.

"I wasn't killed because I discovered Orion."

A pause.

"I was killed because I discovered what they planned to do with you."

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

PROJECT CELESTE — PHASE THREE

My blood ran cold.

"Phase Three?"

Nathan whispered.

My mother's voice continued.

"Phase One was observation."

"Phase Two was trauma testing."

A pause.

"Phase Three was activation."

I stared.

"What activation?"

The screen displayed a neural diagram.

Human brain patterns.

Then my name.

SUBJECT CELESTE REED

Ethan stepped closer.

His face turned pale.

"No..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He pointed at the screen.

"The system isn't predicting decisions."

A pause.

"It's using you."

Silence.

My mother continued.

"Orion discovered something unique about you."

"Your brain doesn't process choices the same way."

"They cannot predict you because you don't follow probability."

A pause.

"You choose based on empathy."

The word appeared.

EMOTIONAL VARIANCE

My mother whispered:

"Your humanity became the one thing their system could never calculate."

The room went silent.

Then another file opened automatically.

ORION FINAL PROTOCOL

The last page loaded.

REQUIRED COMPONENT: SUBJECT ZERO + SUBJECT CELESTE

Everyone froze.

I looked at Ethan.

"Subject Zero?"

Before he could answer...

A voice came from behind us.

"Your mother was always sentimental."

We turned.

A figure stood at the entrance.

Dr. Evelyn Voss.

Alive.

She walked into the chamber slowly.

No fear.

No guards.

Because she didn't need them.

"You finally found the truth."

I raised my weapon.

"You killed my mother."

Evelyn smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"I saved the world from what she was about to create."

My eyes narrowed.

"You expect me to believe that?"

She looked at the screens.

"Your mother believed humanity could survive without control."

A cold smile.

"I believed humanity needed protection from itself."

Nathan stepped forward.

"You murdered people."

Evelyn looked at him.

"And your father built the empire that funded me."

Silence.

Then she looked back at me.

"Do you know why I never feared you, Celeste?"

I said nothing.

"Because I knew you would come here."

A pause.

"I designed your entire life to lead you here."

The words hit like a weapon.

My entire journey.

Every loss.

Every betrayal.

Every battle.

Was planned.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Tomorrow, the predictive system activates."

She looked at me.

"And when it does..."

"The world will finally become predictable."

I tightened my grip.

"No."

Evelyn smiled.

"You still believe choice matters."

A pause.

"That's why you are the most dangerous person alive."

Suddenly...

The facility alarms sounded.

Red lights flashed.

SYSTEM ACTIVATION: 12 HOURS REMAINING

Evelyn turned away.

"Welcome home, Celeste."

The doors behind her closed.

Leaving us trapped inside the place where my life began.

May you like

And above us...

The world was counting down.
