CHAPTER 17 — The Memories They Buried

The room went dark.
Not the kind of darkness caused by a power failure.
A different kind.
The kind that comes when the truth finally reaches the surface...
And everything you believed begins to collapse.
I stood in the center of the archive.
Surrounded by thousands of files.
Thousands of secrets.
But only one question mattered.
What did my mother hide inside me?
Ethan was the first to speak.
"Memory recovery."
His voice was barely a whisper.
"That's not possible."
Admiral Reed looked at him.
"You know what that means?"
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Orion had a program."
A pause.
"They experimented with memory suppression."
My eyes narrowed.
"Suppression?"
Ethan looked at me.
"Not deleting memories."
"Changing access to them."
A chill moved through me.
"They couldn't erase who I was."
I whispered.
"So they locked away parts of me."
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
I was right.
Nathan stepped toward the computer terminal.
"Can we access the files?"
Admiral Reed shook his head.
"Most of them are encrypted."
I looked at the screen where Evelyn had appeared.
"Not all."
Everyone turned.
"What do you mean?"
Ethan asked.
I pointed at the terminal.
"She wanted me to find this."
A pause.
"She wouldn't have shown herself unless she wanted something."
Ethan looked concerned.
"Celeste, people like Evelyn don't reveal secrets."
"They reveal traps."
I stared at the screen.
"Then let's find out what kind."
I placed my hand on the scanner.
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then:
IDENTITY CONFIRMED
Everyone froze.
WELCOME BACK, CELESTE
The system activated.
A hidden section opened.
Not files.
A video.
The title appeared:
PROJECT CELESTE — PERSONAL MEMORY ARCHIVE
My heart sank.
The first recording began.
A young girl appeared.
Me.
Six years old.
Sitting in a room.
Across from my mother.
I couldn't move.
Because I remembered this room.
Not clearly.
Like a dream.
Like something buried beneath ice.
My younger self looked scared.
My mother held my hand.
"Celeste."
Little me looked up.
"Yes, Mommy?"
My mother's eyes were full of sadness.
"I need you to remember something."
The child version of me nodded.
"If someone ever tells you that you are special..."
A pause.
"Ask them why."
I watched silently.
My mother continued.
"People who want to control you will always tell you that you are chosen."
Little me frowned.
"Am I chosen?"
My mother smiled sadly.
"No."
A pause.
"You are free."
The video paused.
I felt tears forming.
Because suddenly...
I remembered.
Not everything.
But enough.
My mother wasn't teaching me how to become powerful.
She was teaching me how not to be controlled.
The video continued.
A younger Arthur appeared.
Standing beside my mother.
They were arguing.
"You can't do this, Eleanor."
Arthur looked afraid.
"If Voss finds out..."
My mother interrupted.
"She already knows."
My father looked at me through the glass.
"Then take Celeste and run."
My mother's expression changed.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because running only saves one person."
A pause.
"If I leave, she will continue."
Arthur became angry.
"She's our daughter!"
My mother's voice broke.
"I know."
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my father's empty chair.
For the first time...
I saw him differently.
Not as the man who abandoned me.
But as the man who made the wrong choices while trying to fight the wrong enemy.
But forgiveness...
Was still far away.
Nathan looked at the screen.
"There are more files."
Another folder appeared.
BLACK TIDE — TRUE OBJECTIVE
Ethan stepped closer.
"Open it."
The document loaded.
The first line:
THE PURPOSE OF BLACK TIDE WAS NOT TO DESTROY THE SHIP.
My breathing stopped.
The second line:
THE PURPOSE WAS TO FORCE CELESTE REED INTO A DECISION.
A memory flashed.
The burning corridor.
The collapsing door.
My crew trapped behind it.
I remembered.
The impossible choice.
Save myself.
Or save them.
The file continued.
SUBJECT RESPONSE: ACCEPTED PERSONAL SACRIFICE.
RESULT: FAILURE OF CONTROL MODEL.
Ethan stared.
"They weren't testing if you could survive."
I looked at him.
"What were they testing?"
His voice was quiet.
"If you would choose yourself."
Silence.
They expected me to leave.
They expected me to save myself.
They expected fear to win.
But I stayed.
And that was the moment they lost.
Suddenly...
A warning alarm appeared.
EXTERNAL ACCESS DETECTED
Nathan looked at the system.
"Someone is entering."
Admiral Reed immediately grabbed his weapon.
"How?"
Nathan's face changed.
"Not entering the building."
A pause.
"Entering the archive."
Everyone froze.
The lights flickered.
The security doors locked.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Celeste."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not Marcus.
Not Evelyn.
My mother.
"Mom?"
The speakers crackled.
A recording.
Not live.
But my mother's voice.
"If you are hearing this..."
A pause.
"Then they failed to erase your memory."
My heart stopped.
Nathan whispered:
"She planned everything."
My mother's voice continued.
"There is something I never told you."
The archive screens activated.
A single image appeared.
A DNA report.
I stared.
The name at the top:
CELESTE REED
Below it:
GENETIC COMPATIBILITY: 99.8%
I frowned.
"What's this?"
Then the next line appeared.
MATERNAL ORIGIN CONFIRMED
I looked at Ethan.
At Nathan.
At Admiral Reed.
Nobody understood.
Then my mother's voice spoke again.
"Celeste..."
"You were not chosen by Project Celeste."
A pause.
"You were the reason Project Celeste existed."
The screen changed.
A second name appeared.
A name I had never heard.
SUBJECT ZERO
My blood ran cold.
Ethan whispered:
"No..."
"What?"
I asked.
He stared at the screen.
"Subject Zero was the first person Orion ever studied."
A pause.
"The person who proved human prediction was possible."
I looked at the DNA report.
Then the final line appeared.
SUBJECT ZERO: ELEANOR REED
My mother.
The room went silent.
My mother wasn't just part of Project Celeste.
She was the beginning.
Then another message appeared.
MEMORY RESTORATION: FINAL STAGE AVAILABLE
A button.
RESTORE NOW?
Everyone looked at me.
Because they knew.
Once I pressed it...
There was no going back.
I looked at the screen.
At my mother's final secret.
At the life everyone had stolen from me.
Then I pressed:
YES.
The screen went white.
And suddenly...
Every locked memory returned.
The laboratory.
The experiments.
My mother's final night.
The person standing beside her.
The person who killed her.
And the last thing I remembered...
Was a voice whispering:
"I'm sorry, Celeste."
My father's voice.
But that was impossible.
Because I had always believed...
My father wasn't there that night.
The memory ended.
I opened my eyes.
Everyone was staring at me.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Celeste?"
I looked at him.
And whispered the truth.
"My father didn't fail to save my mother."
A pause.
"He was the one who was there when she died."
The room went silent.
"And he wasn't alone."
I looked at the screen.
The final image from my restored memory.
The person standing beside Arthur.
May you like
The person who gave the order.
Dr. Evelyn Voss.
