CHAPTER 11 — The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The world has a strange way of bringing back ghosts.

Sometimes they return as memories.

Sometimes they return as regrets.

And sometimes...

They return standing in front of you with a weapon in their hand.

I stared through the broken window.

The cold night air entered the room.

Glass covered the floor.

The alarms screamed.

But I heard nothing.

Because the man standing outside was impossible.

Commander Ethan Cross.

My teammate.

My closest friend.

The man who died during Black Tide.

The man whose death I had carried on my shoulders for six years.

"No..."

The word escaped my lips.

Nathan looked at me.

"Celeste?"

I couldn't move.

My mind was somewhere else.

Back beneath the South China Sea.

Back inside the burning ship.

Back in the moment when Ethan pushed me toward the emergency exit.

"Commander, go!"

"I'm not leaving you."

"That's an order."

The last thing I saw...

Was the explosion swallowing the corridor.

I spent six years believing I failed him.

And now...

He was alive.

Admiral Reed raised his weapon.

"Everyone stay back."

But I stepped forward.

"Lower your gun."

The admiral looked at me.

"Celeste, we don't know who he is."

I stared at the man outside.

"Yes, we do."

A pause.

"I know him."

The figure outside moved closer.

The security lights revealed his face.

Older.

Harder.

Scarred.

But it was him.

Ethan Cross.

The same eyes.

The same expression.

Only the person standing there was no longer the man I remembered.

The door opened.

Security surrounded him.

But Ethan didn't resist.

He simply looked at me.

And said:

"You're alive."

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like he never expected it.

I walked toward him.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Ethan looked down.

"I know."

The room exploded with questions.

"How did you survive?"

"Who brought you here?"

"Why did you hide?"

But Ethan ignored everyone.

His eyes remained on me.

"You have my scars."

I froze.

"What?"

He looked at the burns on my arm.

"The ones from the door."

A pause.

"You held it open."

My throat tightened.

"You remember?"

A bitter smile appeared.

"Every second."

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to ask why he abandoned me.

Why he let me believe he died.

Why he never came back.

But before I could speak...

Ethan said something that changed everything.

"I wasn't rescued."

Silence.

"I was taken."

Everyone stopped.

Admiral Reed lowered his weapon slightly.

"Taken by who?"

Ethan looked at Arthur.

Then at the encrypted drive.

Then back at me.

"The same people who created Project Celeste."

My stomach tightened.

"Tell us everything."

Admiral Reed's voice was commanding.

Ethan looked exhausted.

"I can't."

The room went silent.

"Why?"

I asked.

His eyes met mine.

"Because if I tell you..."

A pause.

"They will know I failed."

Suddenly...

Every light in the mansion turned off.

Again.

But this time...

Nobody was surprised.

Because we knew.

Someone was watching.

Ethan immediately moved.

Not like a businessman.

Not like a survivor.

Like a soldier.

"Everyone down."

A second later...

A drone crashed through the window.

Smoke filled the room.

Admiral Reed grabbed the encrypted drive.

Nathan pulled Arthur behind cover.

And I found myself moving beside Ethan.

Like we had never been separated.

Like six years had never passed.

The attack lasted less than two minutes.

Precise.

Professional.

Whoever came...

Wasn't trying to kill us.

They were trying to retrieve something.

When the smoke cleared...

Ethan was holding a small device he had taken from the drone.

A communication chip.

He stared at it.

His face changed.

"No."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

He looked terrified.

Admiral Reed took the device.

His expression changed instantly.

"This frequency..."

He looked at Ethan.

"Where did you get this?"

Ethan answered quietly:

"From the people who kept me alive."

The room became silent.

"Who?"

I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

"The Orion Foundation."

Arthur closed his eyes.

Of course.

Another connection.

Another secret.

Ethan continued.

"They didn't save me because they cared."

"They saved me because they needed information."

"About what?"

Ethan looked at me.

"About you."

The room froze.

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was tired.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

I looked around.

"My entire life has been about me."

A pause.

"But nobody tells me why."

Ethan stepped closer.

"Because you are the only person who can destroy them."

I frowned.

"Destroy who?"

His answer was immediate.

"The Orion Foundation."

Admiral Reed looked at him.

"That's impossible."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"It's already happening."

He reached into his jacket.

He removed a small folder.

Old.

Damaged.

And placed it on the table.

"I stole this before I escaped."

I opened it.

The first page made my blood run cold.

PROJECT CELESTE — FINAL OBJECTIVE

I turned the page.

And read the words beneath.

SUBJECT PURPOSE: IDENTIFY AND ELIMINATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONTROLLED LEADERSHIP

I looked up.

"What does this mean?"

Ethan's expression became serious.

"It means Project Celeste was never about creating a weapon."

A pause.

"It was about finding someone who could defeat one."

I looked down again.

The next page contained a list.

Names.

Targets.

Organizations.

And at the bottom...

A final entry.

PRIMARY THREAT: CELESTE REED

I looked at Ethan.

"So they wanted me dead."

He shook his head.

"No."

His voice lowered.

"They wanted you controlled."

A chill ran through me.

Because that was worse.

Death ends a life.

Control steals it.

Suddenly...

The old military radio on the table activated.

Static.

Then a familiar voice.

A voice that made Ethan freeze.

A voice that made Admiral Reed stand.

A voice that made Arthur look like he had seen a ghost.

Marcus Vale.

"Hello, Celeste."

Nobody breathed.

The voice continued.

"I see Ethan finally came home."

Ethan grabbed the radio.

"You."

Marcus laughed.

"Still angry, Ethan?"

A pause.

"After everything I did for you?"

I looked at Ethan.

"What is he talking about?"

Silence.

Then Marcus said:

"Tell her, Ethan."

Ethan's face changed.

"Tell her why you survived."

My heart started beating faster.

Marcus continued:

"Tell her who opened the door that night."

The room went completely still.

I looked at Ethan.

"No."

He couldn't look at me.

And that was the answer.

Marcus spoke one final sentence.

"Your hero didn't die saving you, Celeste."

A pause.

"He was the one who trapped you there."

The radio went silent.

And for the second time in my life...

May you like

The person I trusted most...

Became the person I feared most.
