CHAPTER 18 — The Night My Father Chose a Side

The memory ended.

But the pain remained.

I sat in silence as the final image burned into my mind.

My father.

Evelyn Voss.

My mother on the floor.

The night everything changed.

The night I lost the woman who gave me life.

For years, I believed my father was simply a coward.

A man who chose his empire over his family.

Now I knew something worse.

He was there.

He knew.

And he let it happen.

"Celeste..."

Nathan's voice broke the silence.

But I didn't answer.

Because inside my head...

I was back there.

Six years old.

Standing outside that room.

Listening.

Watching.

Remembering.

The memory returned in fragments.

My mother's voice.

Arthur's fear.

Evelyn's cold confidence.

And the sentence that destroyed everything.

"The girl must never know."

I looked at Admiral Reed.

"Did you know?"

His face changed.

A terrible silence.

That was enough.

"You knew."

He looked away.

"Not everything."

I stood.

"But enough."

My voice remained calm.

Strangely calm.

The kind of calm that comes after someone breaks something inside you.

"You all knew pieces."

"You all carried pieces of my life."

"And every single one of you decided I couldn't handle the truth."

Ethan lowered his eyes.

Nathan looked ashamed.

Admiral Reed said nothing.

Because there was nothing to say.

Then the archive door opened.

Everyone turned.

A figure stepped inside.

No weapon.

No guards.

No fear.

Arthur Reed.

My father.

For a moment...

Nobody moved.

He looked different.

Older.

Broken.

Not the billionaire everyone feared.

Just a man who had finally run out of places to hide.

Nathan immediately stepped forward.

"Where have you been?"

Arthur looked at his son.

"I was trying to stop her."

I laughed softly.

"Her?"

Arthur looked at me.

"Evelyn."

The name meant nothing anymore.

Because now I knew exactly who she was.

The woman behind everything.

I stepped closer.

"You were there."

Arthur froze.

My voice became sharper.

"The night Mom died."

Silence.

"You were there."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The answer hit harder than I expected.

Not because I didn't know.

Because hearing him admit it made it real.

"Why?"

A single word.

But it carried twenty years of pain.

Arthur looked at me.

"I was trying to save you."

I stared.

"That's what everyone says."

He swallowed.

"But this time, it's the truth."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice trembled slightly.

"You don't get to say that."

Arthur stepped closer.

"Your mother discovered what Evelyn was building."

"The predictive system."

"The control network."

"Everything."

A pause.

"She wanted to destroy it."

"And you?"

Arthur looked down.

"I wanted to help her."

I stared.

"Then why did she die?"

His silence answered before his words did.

"Because Evelyn knew."

The room became still.

"She knew your mother was going to expose Orion."

Arthur continued.

"She knew I was helping Eleanor."

His hands trembled.

"And she gave me a choice."

I felt cold.

"What choice?"

Arthur looked at me.

"The empire."

A pause.

"Or my family."

Nobody spoke.

"She threatened Reed Global."

"She threatened Nathan."

"She threatened you."

Arthur's voice cracked.

"I thought I could negotiate."

My expression hardened.

"You thought you could control monsters."

He nodded.

"I was wrong."

Ethan stepped forward.

"But Black Tide?"

Arthur looked at him.

"I didn't authorize it."

Ethan frowned.

"Then why was Celeste's name attached?"

Arthur looked at me.

"Because Evelyn needed a final test."

My fists tightened.

"The test wasn't whether I would survive."

Arthur nodded.

"No."

"It was whether you would forgive the people who failed you."

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

"What?"

Arthur continued.

"Evelyn believed trauma revealed a person's true nature."

"She wanted to see whether pain would turn you into someone like her."

A pause.

"Someone who valued results over people."

My eyes narrowed.

"And?"

Arthur looked at me.

"You proved her wrong."

Suddenly...

The archive screens activated.

A message appeared.

ORION FOUNDATION SYSTEM OVERRIDE

Everyone turned.

Ethan immediately moved toward the computer.

"Someone is accessing the network."

The screen changed.

Evelyn Voss appeared.

This time...

She wasn't hiding.

"Arthur."

Her voice was calm.

"You finally came back."

My father looked at the screen.

"You killed Eleanor."

Evelyn smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"You did."

The room froze.

Arthur's face changed.

I looked at him.

"What?"

Evelyn continued.

"Tell her."

Arthur said nothing.

"Tell Celeste what happened after Eleanor discovered the truth."

My father closed his eyes.

And I knew.

There was another secret.

Of course there was.

"Arthur."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

"What did you do?"

He looked at me.

"I made a deal."

My heart sank.

"With Evelyn?"

He nodded.

"To save you."

I stepped back.

"What deal?"

Arthur's voice broke.

"I agreed to let them take your memories."

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly...

The truth became worse.

My father didn't just hide the truth.

He helped erase it.

Evelyn smiled.

"Do you understand now, Celeste?"

"You spent your life searching for the person who destroyed you."

A pause.

"But the truth is..."

"Your entire family participated."

The screen changed.

A countdown appeared.

ORION FINAL PROTOCOL

ACTIVATION: 24 HOURS

Ethan looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

"No."

I turned.

"What is it?"

He whispered:

"The predictive system."

A pause.

"It's going live."

Admiral Reed stepped forward.

"Meaning?"

Ethan looked at me.

"Meaning Evelyn won't need soldiers anymore."

The screen displayed a global map.

Thousands of connections.

Governments.

Military systems.

Financial networks.

Ethan's voice became quiet.

"She will be able to predict every decision made by every leader on Earth."

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn looked directly at me.

"Twenty-four hours, Celeste."

"You have spent your whole life proving you cannot be controlled."

A smile.

"Now prove you can stop someone who controls everything else."

The screen went black.

I stood there.

Surrounded by betrayal.

Surrounded by secrets.

But for the first time...

I wasn't looking for answers.

I knew exactly what I had to do.

I turned to Ethan.

"Where is the Orion headquarters?"

He looked surprised.

"Celeste..."

"Where?"

A long silence.

Then he answered.

"Under the old naval command facility."

I picked up my coat.

Nathan looked at me.

"You're going after them."

I nodded.

Admiral Reed frowned.

"That's a suicide mission."

I looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"It's the mission I was created for."

And for the first time in twenty years...

May you like

I stopped running from my past.

I was going back to where it began.
