CHAPTER 14 — The Council Behind the Curtain

The order arrived at exactly midnight.
Not through the courts.
Not through the military chain of command.
Not through any official government channel.
Just a single document.
A single signature.
A single command.
CELESTE REED — IMMEDIATE DETENTION AUTHORIZED
For years, I had fought enemies who stood in front of me.
Soldiers.
Terrorists.
Corrupt officials.
But this was different.
Because this enemy had no face.
No uniform.
No name.
Only power.
The hearing room emptied within minutes.
Officials who had been questioning me suddenly refused to make eye contact.
Lawyers gathered their files.
Security officers received new orders.
Everyone was afraid.
Not of me.
Of whoever had issued that command.
Admiral Reed watched the room clear.
His expression was darker than I had ever seen.
"This is impossible."
I looked at him.
"You said that before."
He lowered his eyes.
"About Ethan."
A pause.
"About Project Celeste."
Another pause.
"And I was wrong."
Nathan stood silently near the wall.
For once...
Nobody saw him as the heir of Reed Global.
They saw him as a witness.
A witness who knew too much.
The chairman approached.
"Commander Reed."
I turned.
He looked uncomfortable.
"The order is real."
"I know."
"You need to understand..."
I interrupted.
"No."
My voice was calm.
"I understand perfectly."
I looked at the document.
"Someone powerful is afraid."
The chairman said nothing.
Because he knew.
Fear was the only reason people used this much force.
We escaped through a private exit beneath the courthouse.
Not because I was guilty.
Because the truth was becoming dangerous.
In the underground parking area, Admiral Reed stopped.
"We need a plan."
I looked at him.
"No."
He frowned.
"No?"
I shook my head.
"They want me to run."
A pause.
"They want me to look guilty."
Nathan understood first.
"You want them to chase you."
I nodded.
"Exactly."
Admiral Reed stared at me.
"Celeste..."
"I spent six years reacting."
My voice hardened.
"Running from accusations."
"Searching for answers."
"Trying to prove I wasn't the monster they created."
I looked at the three people standing with me.
"My mistake was believing I needed permission to fight back."
Nobody spoke.
"Now they know I found the truth."
A pause.
"So let them come."
Two hours later...
We returned to the old Reed mansion.
The place where my mother hid her secrets.
The place where everything began.
Ethan was waiting.
He had recovered from the attack.
But something about him had changed.
He no longer looked like a soldier hiding something.
He looked like someone ready to finally confess.
"I need to tell you the rest."
I looked at him.
"About Black Tide?"
He nodded.
"About me."
The room became quiet.
Ethan placed an old military badge on the table.
I recognized it immediately.
A command insignia.
But not mine.
Not his.
Someone else's.
"Where did you get this?"
I asked.
"From Marcus."
My eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Ethan looked down.
"Six years ago, before Black Tide, Marcus approached me."
Admiral Reed's expression changed.
"What did he want?"
Ethan answered:
"To recruit me."
Silence.
"He told me Project Celeste wasn't an experiment."
A pause.
"He told me it was preparation."
"For what?"
Ethan looked at me.
"For a war that hadn't started yet."
I felt a chill.
"What war?"
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"The war between governments and the organizations controlling them."
Nathan frowned.
"You mean Orion Foundation?"
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
Everyone froze.
"Orion is only one branch."
The room went silent.
"Then who is above them?"
Ethan looked at the old files.
"The Council."
The same council that ordered my arrest.
Admiral Reed sat down slowly.
"The Special Intelligence Council."
Ethan nodded.
"Not a government department."
"Not a military organization."
A pause.
"They are the people who decide which governments survive."
Nobody spoke.
I thought about my father.
His empire.
His obsession with control.
His fear of losing everything.
Suddenly...
I understood.
Arthur Reed wasn't the top of the pyramid.
He was just another person trapped beneath it.
The encrypted drive activated again.
A hidden file appeared.
This time...
The title was different.
PROJECT CELESTE — SUBJECT ORIGIN
My hands tightened.
"Open it."
Admiral Reed hesitated.
"Are you sure?"
I looked at him.
"I spent my entire life being protected from the truth."
A pause.
"I'm done being protected."
The file opened.
A medical report appeared.
Date:
Twenty-seven years earlier
My eyes stopped.
Twenty-seven years.
Before Black Tide.
Before military training.
Before everything.
The first line:
SUBJECT: CELESTE REED
AGE: 4
My breathing stopped.
"What?"
Ethan looked shocked.
Nathan stepped closer.
"Age four?"
The report continued.
INITIAL OBSERVATION: Exceptional cognitive response under extreme stress.
EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE: ABOVE EXPECTED LEVELS.
DECISION PATTERN: NON-COMPLIANT WITH CONTROL PROTOCOLS.
I stared.
Control protocols?
I looked at my father.
He looked away.
"You knew."
Arthur wasn't there.
But somehow...
I knew.
Ethan whispered:
"They started watching you when you were a child."
The room became cold.
My entire life...
Was never random.
My personality.
My choices.
My career.
Everything had been studied.
Measured.
Predicted.
Then another file appeared.
FINAL SUBJECT EVALUATION
The screen displayed a conclusion.
SUBJECT CANNOT BE CONTROLLED.
SUBJECT CANNOT BE MANIPULATED.
SUBJECT WILL OPPOSE ANY SYSTEM THAT THREATENS HUMAN LIFE.
Below that...
A handwritten note.
My mother's handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
"This is why they fear her."
My eyes burned.
Then the final sentence appeared.
"Celeste is not the weapon."
"Celeste is the person who can destroy the weapon."
Nobody spoke.
Suddenly...
The mansion lights turned on.
All of them.
Every screen in the house activated.
But this time...
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't Victoria.
It wasn't the Council.
It was my father.
Arthur Reed.
His face appeared on every monitor.
But he wasn't in the mansion.
He was somewhere else.
Somewhere dark.
"Celeste."
I froze.
Because I had never seen him look like this.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Terrified.
"If you are seeing this..."
He swallowed.
"Then they found me."
Nathan stepped toward the screen.
"Father?"
Arthur ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
"I spent years trying to protect you."
A pause.
"But I protected the wrong thing."
My heart tightened.
"The empire."
"The reputation."
"The money."
His voice cracked.
"And I lost my daughter."
Silence.
Then he said:
"There is one thing I never told you."
The screen flickered.
A location appeared.
Coordinates.
"The person who ordered Black Tide..."
Arthur looked directly into the camera.
"Was not Marcus Vale."
Everyone froze.
"Was not Victoria Hale."
A pause.
"It was someone inside our family."
The screen went black.
A single name appeared.
ELEANOR REED
My mother's name.
I couldn't breathe.
Nathan whispered:
"No..."
Ethan stepped back.
Admiral Reed stared at the screen.
And I...
I stood frozen.
Because the woman who taught me love...
The woman who told me to trust my heart...
May you like
The woman whose death started this entire nightmare...
May have been the person who created it.
