CHAPTER 10 — The Commander Who Chose Me

The face on the screen disappeared.

But the silence it left behind was louder than any explosion.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood the same terrifying truth.

The person behind Black Tide...

The person who knew about Project Celeste...

The person who had been manipulating events for years...

Was someone who had once stood beside me.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who taught me how to survive.

Admiral Reed stared at the blank screen.

His expression was impossible to read.

Shock.

Anger.

Regret.

I had seen him face enemy commanders without fear.

I had seen him walk into war zones without hesitation.

But I had never seen him look defeated.

"Who is he?"

I asked.

My voice sounded different.

Colder.

Admiral Reed didn't answer.

"Admiral."

Still nothing.

I stepped closer.

"Who is the man who recruited me?"

Finally...

He whispered:

"General Marcus Vale."

The name meant nothing to most people.

But to me...

It meant everything.

Marcus Vale.

My first commander.

My mentor.

The man who saw potential in a scared young officer and gave me my first chance.

He was the man who told me:

"A true commander is not the person who survives."

"A true commander is the person who makes sure everyone else survives first."

Those words shaped my entire life.

I followed him.

I trusted him.

And now...

I learned he may have been the person who destroyed me.

"No."

I whispered.

Admiral Reed looked at me.

"Celeste—"

"No."

I shook my head.

"You don't understand."

I looked at the photograph on the screen.

"He saved my life."

Nobody answered.

Because that was the problem.

The people who hurt you the most...

Are often the ones you never expected.

Nathan stepped forward.

"So he was behind everything?"

Admiral Reed looked at him.

"Not everything."

I turned.

"What does that mean?"

The admiral sighed.

"It means Marcus Vale created Project Celeste."

A pause.

"But he didn't create Black Tide alone."

Arthur's face darkened.

"Victoria."

Admiral Reed nodded.

"And others."

I looked between them.

"My entire life..."

My voice became quieter.

"How much of it was real?"

Nobody answered.

And that hurt more than any confession.

The encrypted drive from my mother's box suddenly activated.

Everyone turned.

The small device began flashing.

Admiral Reed looked surprised.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

I asked.

"It requires Eleanor's biometric access."

I stared.

"My mother's?"

He nodded.

"The system should have been locked forever."

Then the screen displayed:

IDENTITY CONFIRMED

Everyone froze.

A second line appeared.

CELESTE REED — AUTHORIZED USER

My heart stopped.

"How?"

Arthur looked at the device.

"Eleanor."

I turned.

"What?"

His voice was quiet.

"She didn't create Project Celeste because of you."

A pause.

"She created it because she knew one day you would need the truth."

The drive opened.

A video appeared.

My mother.

Eleanor Reed.

Alive.

For a moment...

I couldn't breathe.

It was impossible.

I watched her sit in a dark room.

Older.

Tired.

But still smiling.

"Hello, my beautiful daughter."

My eyes burned.

I had spent years wishing I could hear her voice again.

Now I could.

But I immediately knew something was wrong.

She was recording this before her death.

She knew.

She knew she might not survive.

"Celeste..."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"If you are watching this, then I failed to protect you."

I shook my head.

"No..."

The others watched silently.

My mother continued.

"But listen carefully."

Her expression became serious.

"Everything you believe about Black Tide is incomplete."

The screen changed.

Images appeared.

Military files.

Corporate records.

Secret meetings.

Then...

A photograph.

Marcus Vale.

Victoria Hale.

Arthur Reed.

Together.

My breath caught.

My father looked away.

My mother's voice continued.

"Your father was not the architect."

I looked at Arthur.

He looked broken.

"He was a participant."

A pause.

"But he was also trying to stop them."

I froze.

"What?"

The recording continued.

"Arthur made terrible choices."

"He believed he could control dangerous people by working with them."

"He was wrong."

My eyes moved to my father.

For years, I believed he sacrificed me for his empire.

But the truth was becoming more complicated.

And sometimes...

A complicated truth hurts more than a simple lie.

My mother's voice became softer.

"Celeste, there is something you must know."

The screen changed again.

A medical file appeared.

I recognized the format.

Military evaluation.

But the name was different.

SUBJECT: CELESTE REED

I froze.

My mother continued:

"You were chosen because of your ability to resist psychological manipulation."

"What?"

I whispered.

Admiral Reed looked shocked.

My mother continued.

"The Orion Foundation developed methods to control decision-making."

"They wanted commanders who could be predicted."

"They wanted soldiers who could be controlled."

A pause.

"But you were different."

The screen showed old footage.

Me during training.

Making decisions.

Saving teammates.

Refusing orders that endangered civilians.

My mother's voice continued:

"You could not be controlled."

The room was silent.

Then the final video message appeared.

My mother's face returned.

"Marcus Vale realized something terrifying."

"Someone who cannot be controlled..."

"Cannot be owned."

The recording paused.

Then she said:

"That is why he tried to destroy you."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the screen.

My whole life had been a battle I never knew I was fighting.

Then Arthur finally broke the silence.

"I wanted to tell you."

I looked at him.

"When?"

He had no answer.

"When I was dying?"

His face tightened.

"When I had already forgiven you?"

Silence.

Suddenly...

A gunshot shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Security alarms screamed.

Someone was attacking the house.

Admiral Reed pulled his weapon.

"Everyone down!"

Another shot.

Nathan grabbed the drive.

"We need to move."

I looked outside.

Through the broken window...

I saw a figure standing in the darkness.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

"You finally know who trained you."

Another message appeared.

"Now learn why he was afraid of you."

I looked at the figure outside.

And then...

The person stepped into the light.

My blood turned cold.

Because it wasn't Marcus Vale.

It wasn't Victoria.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone I thought died years ago.

Someone who should have been impossible.

Someone who knew every secret about me.

My own former teammate.

The man who was listed as killed during Black Tide.

Commander Ethan Cross.

And beneath his name on the old military records...

May you like

Was the truth I had never seen.
