CHAPTER 12 — The Betrayal Beneath the Fire

The radio went silent.
But Marcus Vale's final words remained.
"Your hero didn't die saving you, Celeste."
"He was the one who trapped you there."
Nobody moved.
Not because we believed him.
Because we were afraid we might.
I looked at Ethan.
The man who had stood beside me through impossible missions.
The man who had carried wounded soldiers through enemy fire.
The man whose name was written beside mine in every report.
My brother.
My friend.
My teammate.
The man I mourned for six years.
And now...
I didn't know who he was.
"Tell me he's lying."
My voice was quiet.
Ethan didn't answer.
That was worse.
I stepped closer.
"Ethan."
His eyes finally met mine.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Guilt.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Guilt.
"Tell me."
A long silence followed.
Then Ethan whispered:
"He isn't completely lying."
The room went cold.
Nathan took a step back.
"What?"
Admiral Reed's expression changed.
"Explain."
Ethan looked at all of us.
"I didn't cause the explosion."
A pause.
"But I knew the mission was compromised."
My heart sank.
"What does that mean?"
He closed his eyes.
"It means I knew someone had changed the operation parameters."
I stared at him.
"And you didn't tell me?"
His silence answered.
The anger came before the pain.
"You knew?"
Ethan swallowed.
"I tried to warn you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You tried to warn me after we were already trapped."
My voice grew colder.
"You let me walk into that ship."
Ethan looked broken.
"I thought I could fix it."
I laughed bitterly.
"That's what everyone says."
I looked around the room.
"My father wanted to protect the company."
"Nathan wanted to prove himself."
"Victoria wanted control."
"And you..."
I stared at Ethan.
"You wanted to save me."
A pause.
"But somehow..."
My eyes hardened.
"Everyone who tries to save me destroys me first."
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
Ethan looked down.
"I was recruited by Marcus Vale before you joined the program."
Admiral Reed frowned.
"The Project Celeste training?"
Ethan nodded.
"Marcus believed the world was heading toward chaos."
"He wanted commanders who could survive impossible situations."
I interrupted.
"No."
I looked at him.
"He wanted commanders he could control."
Ethan didn't deny it.
"He tested hundreds of people."
A pause.
"Most failed."
"And me?"
Ethan looked at me.
"You were different."
The words felt familiar.
Too familiar.
Everyone had said that.
Different.
Special.
Chosen.
But nobody had ever asked me if I wanted to be.
"Why me?"
Ethan's answer was quiet.
"Because you refused to sacrifice people."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Every candidate was placed in situations where they had to choose."
"Mission success or human lives."
A pause.
"Everyone chose the mission."
His eyes met mine.
"Except you."
I remembered.
Training exercises.
Simulations.
Impossible decisions.
They weren't testing my strength.
They were testing my humanity.
"And Black Tide?"
I asked.
Ethan looked away.
"That was the final test."
My blood ran cold.
"The entire mission?"
"No."
He answered quickly.
"The attack wasn't supposed to happen."
"Then what happened?"
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Someone changed the plan."
Admiral Reed stepped forward.
"Who?"
Ethan looked at Arthur.
Everyone froze.
My father.
Again.
Arthur's face became pale.
"Don't."
Ethan looked at him.
"You knew."
Silence.
I turned toward Arthur.
"Explain."
Arthur didn't answer.
"Explain!"
The room shook with my voice.
For years, I had been patient.
For years, I waited for answers.
No more.
Arthur finally spoke.
"I knew there was a threat."
I stared.
"A threat?"
"Marcus believed someone inside the program was leaking information."
"And you thought that person was me?"
"No."
He looked at me.
"I thought it was Ethan."
Everyone turned.
Ethan froze.
"What?"
Arthur continued.
"Marcus convinced me Ethan had been compromised."
A bitter laugh escaped Ethan.
"Of course he did."
My father lowered his eyes.
"I made a decision."
My voice became cold.
"What decision?"
Arthur whispered:
"I changed the mission."
Silence.
The words destroyed the room.
"You changed it."
I repeated.
"You changed the mission."
Arthur nodded slowly.
"I wanted to separate you from Ethan."
"Why?"
"Because I thought he was dangerous."
I stared at him.
"And you sent us into danger instead."
Arthur had no answer.
The truth was finally clear.
Everyone had played a role.
Marcus manipulated.
Victoria controlled.
Nathan betrayed.
Arthur lied.
Ethan hid the truth.
And I...
I was the person who paid the price.
Suddenly...
The encrypted drive beeped.
Everyone turned.
A new file appeared.
One that had been hidden.
BLACK TIDE — ORIGINAL RECORDING
Admiral Reed opened it.
The video loaded.
The ship.
The night.
The fire.
But this time...
The camera angle was different.
A hidden security feed.
We watched ourselves.
My crew.
Ethan.
Me.
Then...
A figure appeared.
Walking through the damaged corridor.
Wearing a military uniform.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone who was not part of our team.
The camera zoomed in.
The face became clear.
Everyone froze.
It was Marcus Vale.
Alive.
Inside the ship.
Before the explosion.
My hands went cold.
"He was there."
Admiral Reed whispered:
"Impossible."
Ethan stared at the screen.
"I never saw him."
Then the recording continued.
Marcus walked toward the control panel.
He entered a code.
The system changed.
Emergency doors locked.
Evacuation routes closed.
And then...
He looked directly at the camera.
As if he knew someone would watch it someday.
His lips moved.
The audio was damaged.
Admiral Reed restored it.
Static.
Then Marcus's voice:
"Project Celeste begins now."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth was finally visible.
Black Tide wasn't an accident.
It wasn't a test gone wrong.
It wasn't a betrayal between family members.
It was planned.
From the beginning.
Then Nathan's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
"What?"
A pause.
Then he looked at me.
"Celeste..."
"What happened?"
Nathan swallowed.
"The Orion Foundation released a statement."
"About what?"
He handed me the phone.
The headline appeared.
FORMER COMMANDER CELESTE REED RESPONSIBLE FOR BLACK TIDE DISASTER — NEW EVIDENCE EMERGES
My name.
My face.
My reputation.
Everything was being destroyed.
Again.
But this time...
I wasn't the same woman who walked into that burning ship.
I looked at the headline.
Then at the people around me.
And I understood.
They wanted me to fight.
They wanted me to chase the truth.
Because they were afraid of what would happen when I found it.
I closed the phone.
"Good."
Everyone looked at me.
Admiral Reed frowned.
"Good?"
I nodded.
"Now they have to come out of the shadows."
I looked toward the darkness outside.
"Marcus Vale wanted a war."
A pause.
"He just forgot one thing."
May you like
My eyes hardened.
"I survived the first one."
